Just watched the video with Ted....funny but sad at the same time....

Ted seems very weak and can be easily manipulated....he has no one to blame but himself...

At the 40.40 mark of the video it shows where I currently live in Jom Tien...two tall white buildings with red roofs...

Ted fell into the trap and this sort of stuff happens when the little head starts taking control over the big head...

I was in a relationship for over a year and I could see where Ted was coming from, but I didn't let it consume me...Ted was just a lonely guy who liked to drink and had no other interests to speak of...here in Thailand he was somebody and he described it perfectly in the video when he compared himself to the fish on the big hook...

Here's my look on things here...they use you and you use them...it is fun to have a good time but as an older guy like myself, don't fall into the trap of these girls falling in love with you, especially the younger ones...these Thai ladies are looking for a better way of life and you are nothing but a means to an end...I have friends in relationships and only a handful work out....I really enjoy the single life here and the good times that can be had...besides, love is only a bar stool away....

"My Thai Bride" documentary now available on youtube.

Ted is a 46 year-old salesman from Wales. He is divorced, feels marginalised by middle age and is tired of life in the ‘nanny state’. Ted is a frequent visitor to Thailand as a result of his job in an import business. He revels in the freedom he finds in a country where everything is for sale at the right price; including the beautiful young women who want to be with him.

Ted meets Tip who is working in the Rooster Bar. She is in her mid thirties, from the northeastern Issan region, the poorest part of Thailand. Like many Issan women, Tip is uneducated and could never earn enough to own her house or educate her child. She hates the thought of her daughter growing up to be involved in prostitution. When she meets Ted, she thinks she has finally found a foreigner who will take care of her and her daughter.
Ted returns to the UK, but stays in contact with Tip by telephone. He sends her money so she can give up her bar job and return to her family’s farm in her village, Krasang. After a few months, at Tip’s request, Ted returns to Thailand and marries her. Ted liquidates his assets in Wales and sinks his money into building a house and piggery on Tip’s family farm.
He soon discovers there are many other foreign men who have married and settled in northeast Thailand. For many Issan women, marriage to a foreigner provides a way out of debt and a lifetime of difficult work. In northeast Thailand, marriage to a foreigner has become an industry. John, an Australian, says that there are about 90 foreigners living within a five-kilometre radius and that new foreigners arrive every week. Larry, an American, built his wife a large, luxurious house in Krasang. Larry believes she does love him, even though she tells him she doesn’t. Grant’s wife Pon says that when she took Grant home to Krasang, her friends and relatives all came over to her house to see the foreigner, because they couldn’t believe she got one.
Within 12 months, Ted’s hopes for a better life have been dashed. His money has disappeared much faster than he expected. Tip and her family don’t seem to want him around the farm anymore. When Ted asks Tip if she loves him, she says: “I can’t eat or drink your love.” Ted leaves the farm destitute and wonders whether it had been a con all along. Ted rents a room in a nearby town. After surviving on credit for several months, Ted begs Tip to give him some of his money back. But she is only willing to buy him a one-way ticket back to the UK.
Economically, Ted and Tip have traded places and Ted has learned what his Thai wife already knew: without money, you lose everything. My Thai Bride is about the power of money to save and destroy – and the harm that ensues when people are reduced to commodities. While there have been other films about prostitution in Thailand, My Thai Bride explores the lesser known story of the foreign marriage industry and the consequences for the men and women involved.

yup. When the money runs out , you're nothing more than a local. You're coveted for ur monies, nothing more. If u can hang ur ego
at the door , then this place may be for some. But if ur looking for someone to 'care' for u, this place ain't for u. These girls are looking for escape from their misery , ie., how much ? .....:)......whatever makes one happy

Like I said before, you have to know how to play the game here because the girls sure do....it is the price you pay when older guys deal with women who are much younger....and the game is fun when you know how to play and know the rules...

A Thai taxi driver has been charged with murder after allegedly hacking an American passenger to death who 'refused to pay a fare worth less than $2'.
CCTV caught part of the fatal row in Bangkok, and shows a man — later identified as 32-year-old cab driver Chidchai Utmacha — brandishing a long blade, authorities said.
Utmacha allegedly confessed to grabbing a 12-inch machete from his trunk and slashing Troy Lee Pilkington with it.

But he claims he acted in self-defense after the American charged at him after allegedly refusing to pay a 51 baht fee - $1.60 - for his ride.
Police Lt. Col. Teerayut Maiplaeng said Pilkington, 51, had been living in Thailand for at least three years and spoke Thai fluently, the NY Daily News reported.

The footage shows the taxi driver swinging a machete as a man, identified as Mr Pilkington, flails his arms and tries to grab the driver.
The two men then move out of the camera's view, and seconds later, the sword-wielding driver reappears in the frame as he flees the scene.

Mr Pilkington, worked for US machinery company Caterpillar Inc. and had lived in Thailand for at least three years.
The taxi driver told investigators that Pilkington accused him of rigging the taxi's meter and then stormed out of the cab while they sat in traffic.
He claimed the American threw a cup of coffee at him when he asked for the money, after which he pulled the knife from his trunk and chased after Pilkington.
Police identified the driver from the video footage and arrested him at his house on Sunday.
Chidchai is facing charges of murder and carrying a weapon in public without reasonable cause.

[h=1]Italian Expat Caught Stealing From Phuket Temple Charity Box: Stiff Penalty Likely[/h] By Sert Tongdee
Tuesday, August 27, 2013
PHUKET: A security camera has captured an Italian expat as he stole 100 baht from a charity donation box at a Buddhist temple on Phuket.

Franco Menichelli, 54, used a metal rod with a sticky substance on the end to pull a 100 baht note from the charity box at Phuket's Karon Temple.

Monks at the temple spotted Sunday's theft in reviewing the security camera footage. Mr Menichelli was arrested yesterday when he went back to the temple to steal again.

He told officers from Chalong Police Station, in southern Phuket, that he was down and out and forced to steal to survive.

''I have been on Phuket for 10 years,'' he told them. ''I opened a seafood restaurant in Rawai beach [near Chalong] but it didn't work out. Now I am broke.''

The arrest of Mr Menichelli comes amid rising concern about the number of expats sleeping on the streets and unable to pay for hospital treatment on Phuket and throughout Thailand.

Public hospitals on Phuket are obliged to treat expats but often, the patients are unable to pay. Australians are reported to be among the worst at not paying their hospital bills.

It's understood Mr Menichelli was living with his Thai girlfriend in a low-cost apartment in Chalong.

Stealing from a charity box at a Buddhist temple is likely to bring Mr Menichelli a harsh penalty. He is likely to face a jail term when he appears in court, followed by deportation.

Booked for 11 days in Feb 2014, staying in a guesthouse on Soi Lengkee in Patts. Plan on spending most of my time at LK Metro, Soi Diana, and Soi Honey (for massage). Might hit Walking Street and a few of the agagos there just to check it out but I'm usually not into overcrowded/touristy places. I have heard there are many russian families and chinese tour groups hanging out there.

Oh yeah, of course I can't forget to visit Soi 6 and have some drinks at NightWish, Pussy Club, and SkyBar. Also thinking about joining a crawl to Ban Chang or the dark side.

First time to LOS but I have been to Cambodia, Vietnam, Bali, and Singapore. SE Asia is my favorite and only travel destination and can't wait for this upcoming trip. It will be here before I know because this time of year flies by with football and the holidays.

Ask Seymour and his friend Fig...they were here a few years ago and we had a great time with the ladies and golfing everyday...just remember, you are the hunted here when dealing with the opposite sex...you just have to know how to play the game and have fun...

Viejo, I just got back from 9 Days in Cuba. Sey wasn't able to make this trip. When I got back and Sey asked about it; first question he had, "Ok, was it better than Thailand...?"

Cuba: Strange, Interesting, Full of beautiful women, Truly a unique experience especially for an American.

Better than Thailand? No. Not even close.

Viejo, keep living the dream, drive em straight and we will see you sooner rather than later.

So far no problems in my travels, I am low-key and respectful towards others. I also have no issues avoiding confrontation and would rather just pay up if any disputes arise involving money rather than escalate the situation.

I have been scammed a few times in SE Asia but I think the most was for about $10 - in Hanoi when I was distracted by one guy and his partner started "repairing" my elderly father's shoe. In the Thai taxi driver machete incident I would have just given him the $2 he was trying to scam and live to see another day.

Fig,

How do you get around the "issues" for Americans travelling to Cuba? Fly to Mexico first?
