What about a popup (not infield fly) that the fielder makesit look like he will catch and then lets drop and get a double play? Is that cheating because there was deception?

As long as it's not against the rules, I have no problem with pretty much anything unless it puts another player at an unusual risk for injury. This did not. No problem. Now, what Pierzinski did the other day -- THAT is bush league. You can injure a guy with that. Likme I said, if you sldie into 2nd and try to hurt the infielder...bush league.
It is in the rules. With a runner on first, if the fielder drops it intentionally, it is an intentional drop. Dead ball. The only way he can turn a double play is if the batter doesn't run, and he lets it hit the ground before it touches his glove.

Hopefully ESPN will show it after they get done praising the Spurs here...

Question for all you baseball gurus.

I thought it was common place that the catcher talks to the hitter and trys to rattle him all the way through the ab.

I agree baseball is a different sport but that doesn't mean you can't compare situations where you are using "verbal deception."

And let's be serious, Manny, Sammy, and a handful of others admire their homeruns every single time they kill one deep. Manny should be hit a hell of a lot more. Least A-Rod doesn't pose.

Good point. From what I've heard Manny and Sammy would've gotten earholed 30 years ago for that shit. I like Ramirez but I've seen the dumb bastard admire a 460 foot bomb when his team is down 6 runs. Gibson and Dreisdel (sp?) wouldn't put up with that nonsense.

why are you under the impression this is commonplace? aside from repositioning for pitch location, there really isnt a whole lot of catch/hitter chess games.

If that is the rule (intentional drop), then why not just have the infield fly rule in effect for that as well. Its the same principle.

The difference is that the infield fly is called immediately, and is a live ball, whether it's caught or dropped. Runners can advance if it's dropped.

Smart ya, but at the sametime it is Bush league too. What you fail to realize is theres a code amonst ballplayers, and stuff like this isnt viewed as being ok and it is dealt with. I've seen this done a lot and believe me.....the guy who pulls some shit like this wishes he hadnt after his next plate appearance.

Don't tell me what I fail to realize, last time I checked you weren't putting on cleats getting paid millions of dollars a year to play baseball so don't act like you're in the club. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I know the unwritten rules, every team breaks them though. The consequence to pay, and in this case padding your lead with a few extra runs was worth it. There are always things to weight. Baseball players don't seem to high on priorty if they're not shunning steroids as a collective group, or how about tossing at Elijah Duke's head at least once for threatening to kill his wife and kid. Yelling something out for distraction is suddenly horrible. No, every team does shit like this.

These Blue Jays players were stupid enough to fall for it and deserve the embarassment.

Agreed. My point is if you are A-Rod, one of the best players in the game, you dont need to do crap like this. If you are anyone on the Pirates, scream away!!!!

people crying that baseball is different really don't much about the history of baseball. Stealing signs from second base, peaking in on the catcher calling pitches, spit balls, steroids, hgh, corked bats, superballs in bats, pine tar on bats, second baseman pretending to touch second base on double plays etc....

Baseball players have been doing this type of crap for years. If baseball was so pure (as opposed to football) then why do we see players skirting the rules like this ALL the time???

I'd equate his stunt with stealing signs. The Jays will deal with it next time they face the Yankees.

If bush league antics are known, they are dealt with. You want to peek in at the catcher, fine. But you will get hit the first time, and there will be a fight the second time.
