Wasn't even close...same thing when a midlle infielder tries to fake the baserunner from going first to third or when the infielder intentionally fakes like the ball is still in play...A/Rod did nothing wrong...

Not the first time Alex has broken out the 'goofy kids stuff' on the bases.

Or, we saw Reyes try this last week.

Runner on first and one out. Line drive to Reyes, he tried to fake dropping the line drive on purpose and go for the double play. Umpire didn't buy it.

If the umpire did buy it, would that be cheating? I don't think so.

It's just an element of baseball, trickery, and as long as it's not the rule book go for it.

verbal decpetion was bush during little league (there were always those clown teams that would 'hey batter, batter, swing!' the opposition). needless to say, for grown men, verbal deception is pretty lame.

really not even comparable to fake outs or any of the other examples in this thread.

I was at that game and AROD was not carrying that bag on that play. Clearly photoshopped!

So - I guess you would also say a runner on 2nd stealing signs from the catcher is cheating.

Wrong, it's smart play.

It's smart but it's also known if someone gets caught doing this they get one upside the head next ab.

A lot of unwritten rules in baseball, not sure what other players and managers think of what A-Rod did tonight though.

The D'Rays won tonight...

So Rodriguez had to do everything possible... so they could keep pace with 'em...

For last place.

I have mixed feelings on the play. Clever - yes. But it is poor sportsmanship.

ARod is VERY lucky this happened in the 9th inning of the last game of the series or he'd be leaving TO with ball print in the middle of his back.
Exactly. It's not against the rules, but it was wrong. And he would have been hit for sure. And he probably still will be next series. He broke a rule that is not on the books but goes without saying.

Alright so in football when the defense raises their hands and jumps around to summon the crowd to get loud so the offense can't call audibles accurately - that's verbal deception yet widely accepted.

Bullshit. That is in the rules. It's an intentional drop, and it's a dead ball. If it wasn't in the rules, then every line drive would get dropped and be a double play. This here is a situation that will not be tolerated by the other team. Do it all you want, and you will get hit. And then you will get swung at if you continue. He won't do it again. I promise.

Well in the NFL...

When the DLINE moves early...to induce a false start...they are the ones that get penalized...

Apples vs Oranges...

Joe Torre keeps his job for another night...Hooray!

Or when they yell a snap call to make the offensive linemen jump early.

How bout in the NBA when the opponents bench players are all yelling at the guy who's shooting from the corner, is that okay?

I think this was okay really...not a major deal...the player drops this ball 1 out of 1000 times.

How about yesterday when Richard Hamilton got into the face of Lebron James before his clutch free throws? Was that cheating? It was verbal deception...

Quit crying.

Football has nothing to do with baseball. Apples to oranges.

Why are people comparing this play to other situations? It was a completely bush league play. Anyone with half a baseball brain knows this. Joe Torre does not want his top hitter pulling this crap because there is always payback, and it just makes the Yankees look bad around the league. What a creep this guy is.
