quote:
SS, most of this is really good advice, but I STRONGLY disagree about weighing yourself on a daily basis. Your weight can easily fluctuate about 5 pounds depending on how much you ate, when you ate, how much water is in your system, etc. If you have to weigh yourself, don't do it more than once per week.

i hear you about the weighing yourself thing...I only weigh myslef first thing in the morning to try to avoid those fluctuations...Also I am mentally aware that the fluctuations will be there so i will not be too high with a 5lb loss or too low with a 5 lb gain...

for me really I think it is good advice as it is all about accountability....you see it in front of you every day...if you have had a few bad days in a row...it will start to show on the scale & you can quickly re-gain control. I read a story once about someone who moved to America from abroad & quickly gained about 30 lbs do to the ease of gaining weight in American society (he had always been thin at home). Anyway he ultimately regained control of his eating & one of his steps was to weigh himself every day. IMHO knowing that you will weigh youreslf everyday & knowing that you have to write down EACH & EVERYTHING THAT YOU EAT...will make you think about every decision before eating...

of course do concede tht there is absolutely no such thing as a perfect plan, just as there is no such thing as a sure thing in sports betting...everybody must do what is best for them...for me...(just like gamgling)...it is all about disciplne...so weighing myself daily aswell as writing everything I eat down on a peice of paper hopefull will help to keep me motivated & disciplined...

By the way I have already lost a pound....weighed in @ 204 this morning...

when trying to lose weight, one should weigh weekly or biweekly, at the same time, on the same scale, wearing the same clothes.

when one has reached his desired weight loss goal, then it is ok to weigh daily to gain control.

the daily water flucuations can depress you, you may think that you have lose but you have actually gained..

My official weigh in was yesterday at 243 lbs, have now been without carbs since sunday night at 8pm cst.. staying under 20g daily. will not weigh again until two weeks have passed.

treadmill 10 minutes yesterday, 12 minutes today, 15 minutes tomorrow.. when reaching 20 minutes, will add 1 minute daily until reaching 60 minutes, then will retrace back down to 45 minutes and remain there. this will speed metabolism and cardio can keep the lost weight off and the diet can end..

From experience i can tell you.
"You must diet to get if off, and cardio to keep it off".

SSI, it seems like you have quite a bit of experience in this subject, I really appreciate you chiming in here...How much 'fat' are you having during this 'no carb' phase? Also How much carbs after this 'no carb' phase?

Can you suggest a few 'snack' items that are acceptable...I know that pecans are good but I dont really like them...Almonds are also good I hear.

Personally I have been doing 20 minutes on the treadmill 3 times a week for 3 weeks now...but I haven't done any weights as of yet...my goal is to settle at around 185lbs but I think I need to lose 30 lbs of fat & gain 10 lbs of muscle mass...I am gonnas take you up on your suggestion & try to increase by 1 minute a day...today I will go dor 21
icon_biggrin.gif

I really want to set myself up this time so that I do not fail & it becomes a true lifestyle change...so in terms of weights I am gonna start with something really easy...today will be my first day...

10 push ups
10 sit ups
(I figure my legs are getting some definition on the elyptical trainer)

Come hell or high water I will make sure I find the time to do at least this, combined with my gradually increasing cardio 3 times per week...

I would be lying if I said No. Losing weight for me has been easy in the past. It's the discipline it takes to do what works that is the problem.

savant, the south beach diet is a form of the atkins diet, with much less fat,,, example baked chicken instead of fried..

south beach is more of a bodybuilding diet.. i started with weights when i was 17, so about 19yrs.. i have never done roids and am quite strong in the weight room (a 360 lb bench).. 8yrs ago, my wife and i bought our own convenience store and ive gained weight since, my normal weight is around 200lbs but now i sit at 243 (yesterday).. im going to lift sparingly until i reach 200lbs, mostly high repetition.. when reaching my desired weight--- my schedule will look like this:

Monday: Chest, shoulders, triceps, 20min cardio.
Tuesday: Back, biceps, 25 min cardio.
Wednesday: Cardio 45 minutes.
Thursday: Chest, shoulders, triceps, 20 min cardio.
Friday: Back, biceps, no cardio.
Saturday: Cardio 30 min.
Sunday: cardio 30 min.

180-200 grams protein daily, 20g or less fat. carbs will come from baked potatoes, fresh fruit, wheat bread.. still no sugar.

snacks on atkins: nuts, pork skins, hot wings, boiled eggs, cheese.
snacks on south beach: you tell me.. must think of low carb and low fat.

atkins for me is a quick fix, using it while building cardio to acceptable levels to increase metabolism..

Savant in 1994 i lost 50lbs in just over 2 months (about 70 days). this is what i did..

Lunch: 1 sandwich on diet wheat bread, ham and mustard or tuna.
Dinner: 1 plate of anything, no second helpings. last bite by 6pm cst.

i was on about a 1200 cal per day diet..

cardio was done for 70 days straight, built from 20 min to 60 min and back down to 30 min.. never missed a day.. weight went from 230 to 180.. man i looked good when i got there, wore size 31 jeans.. then started back on weights and was able to eat anything that i wanted because of 30-45 min cardio done EVERYDAY.. metabolism was flying, then went on vacation and quit cardio.. weight just crept up and yesterday, i sat at 243.. oh well back down i go..

savant for me and for a lot of overweight people the key is to build up your metabolism until you dont have to diet.

you know the people that seem to be able to eat anything and not gain weight, the main reason is their fast metabolism.. as we age our metabolism tends to slow, and some people naturally have slow metabolims.. the good news is that it can be sped up..

savant do cardio everyday for 2 months, 20min (3 times per week) wont cut it.

start with 20min today, do 21 tomorrow and add 1 per day all the way to 60min, when you get there go back down to 30min.. this will take 70 days.. your metabolism should be flying and you wont have to diet much, diet while doing this however..

the goal will be to trade 30-45 min daily cardio, in order to basically eat what you want without gaining weight.. got to hit the gym now, be back by tipoff and faceoff..

Just got back from the gym, signed myself up for 1 yr.

I was only able to run 2.5 miles tonight, but I lifted afterwards, too.

I'm excited...you should all take pictures so in a few months, we can all post before and after pics.

LMFAO We should...Imagine taking 1 picture every day & seeing the progress change in an album or something...LOL

for what it is worth I have succesfully completed day 2...I woke up late again as I normally work Wed to Sat 8am to 6pm...anyway I had a coffee (no sugar), about 1/2 hour later a protein shake with skim milk...about 2pm had left over vegetable stirfry from last night (lots of veggies garlic & Ginger)....the for dinner had ricotta cheese cooked with spinich & garlic...along with 2 chicken skewers & a peice of beef. Had maybe a few peanuts & a bit of cheese in between meals...

went to the gym at around 7pm...yes SSI, I increased my Cardio to 21 Minutes...tomorrow will do 22 minutes...Also Did my 10 Push ups & 10 sit ups...

funny thing is I really think I am gonna do well this time...I am being accountable to myself as I have my notebook & my daily weighings, I am accountable to my fiancee whom I have told I am on the plan...& now I have started this thread & am accountable to all of you...If I were to fail I would feel quite bad....Not to mention I have not suffered over the past two days....This South Beach diet that allows fats & nuts & cheese with lots of veggies, water seems kool...I can handle the no breads & no sugar for 2 weeks...I think...
icon_eek.gif
...anyway FWIW, I have finsihed 2 days now & am feeling fine...Challenge will be next 4 days as I work 8am to 6pm....with this diet you have to do alot of planning for your meals...

best of luck bryan, SSI, kodiac....

boothm you said you were in but we havent heard back? General, Patrick Mcirish....why not hope on board with us...lots of awesome ideas by RXers in this thread...

really it all boils down to wether or not we want to be active & healthy from 60 years old to 80 years old...or not...

Good goin'.

In the future, I would suggest lifting first, then running.

Reason is two-fold: lifting after running is simply harder (getting an actual good lift) than running after lifting. But more importantly, your body is more likely to burn fat while are were running if you've already been exercising (lifting) for 30 minutes prior. The first 20-30 mins of running, your body utilizes stored carbs as it's primary energy source. After that, it switches over to stored fats.

Just doing the stuff, though, in whatever order, is still fantastic.

I've got an article I saved out of muscle and fitness that says they saw an increase in overall weight loss when the person runs first...
icon_confused.gif

Usually when I lift, though, my body is too exhausted to do any running whatsoever. If I run first, my muscles are warmed up so I'm less likely to pull something when I start lifting.

bryan.. You should always run first.. Also always to your legs before your upperbody when lifting.. Your testostarone (spl ?) gets going with the larger legs muscles being worked.. going from legs to uppperbody make the lift that much more beneficial.. It is no surprise that someone like BOOBy wouldn't be aware of this..

good luck!

although I am no expert or anything I can speak from Personal Experience...I much prefer doing the Cardio first...then the weights...My blood is flowing & the weights are just enough to keep my heart rate up...

Less chance for a strain or cramp...mind you I hardly lift weights at all
