From: Roy Beck, President, NumbersUSA Date: Thursday 17FEB2011 9:30 a.m. EST OUR GOOD IMMIGRATION AMENDMENTS IN DANGER OF LOSING ON HOUSE FLOOR

PLEASE PHONE YOUR REPRESENTATIVE AGAIN TODAY

Click here for your Phone Action Note with phone number, talking points and background info.</B>

Most of your NumbersUSA staff remained at our offices until late last evening in case the immigration amendments came up, and Joe Jenkins stuck with the House floor drama on C-SPAN until 3 a.m. But no immigration votes yet. The House starts voting again this morning on the hundreds of amendments to H.R. 1 (the Continuing Resolution for funding the federal government).

Most amendments are failing -- even most Republican amendments in a Republican-controlled House. So, the fact that our two amendments are sponsored by Republicans does not assure us of any good result.

Even if you phoned yesterday, please call again today to support suspension of the visa lottery and suspension of the U.S. Justice Department suing to stop Arizona from doing immigration enforcement.

Especially phone today if you haven't done it yet.

Click here for your Phone Action Note with phone number, talking points and background info.

PASSING OUR 2 IMMIGRATION AMENDMENTS WILL MAKE DEFICIT CUTTING EASIER -- AND PUT AMERICANS BACK TO WORK

The Amendment by Rep. Goodlatte (R-Va.) would deny funding for the Visa Lottery which every year raffles off 50,000 permanent U.S. work permits to foreign workers without regard to their skills, their education or whether there is a job that needs one.

Surely, Congress can stop funding the forced unemployment of our own citizens.

The Amendment by Rep. Poe (R-Texas) would stop the federal government from suing Arizona over its immigration laws. Not only would this be great for unemployed Americans in Arizona, but it would send an encouragement to other states attempting to move illegal aliens out of their communities.

PLEASE READ MY BLOG ABOUT YESTERDAY'S HOUSE PROCEEDINGS -- AND ABOUT HOW REDUCING IMMIGRATION WOULD HELP IN THE DEFICIT FIGHT.

And also join the discussion beneath the blog which you can read here:

www.numbersusa.com/content/nusablog/beckr/february-16-2011/spending-cuts-are-painful-house -cutting-immigration-would-be-easier-

Here is a portion of my argument:

When I see the anguish on the faces and in the voices of congressman after congresswoman on C-SPAN tonight about what will be lost with each spending cut, I can't imagine why any of them would want to force more of these choices through high immigration.

For example, it is clear that money for various kinds of social services to poor Americans will be cut significantly in the Continuing Resolution being debated in the House.

So why would Congress insist on continuing to import more and more poverty by giving out more than a million green cards a year to immigrants who are much poorer than the average American.

If more than half of all immigrant families with children are poor enough to use welfare services, continuing our immigration program obviously just adds a lot more people to divide up a shrinking pie of social services.

If nearly 90% of the increase in the uninsured in America in recent years is due to immigrants, continuing our immigration program obviously just puts enormous demands on all of our country's health care systems to fill in the gaps.

If the average typical poorly educated immigrant household costs the government around $20,000 more in services than are paid in taxes, then continuing our immigration program obviously just makes all the choices on spending cuts and tax increases that much more difficult.

PLEASE CALL. WE HAVE RARELY HAD THIS GOOD OF AN OPPORTUNITY THE LAST SEVERAL YEARS. THANKS.

Roy Beck

Why doesn't the United States just make it impossible for a husband or wife to immigrate to the United States alone and require that the FAMILY immigrate together? And make it so that other relatives, parents, siblings, cousins CANNOT be sponsored by the immigrant?

I dont know it should be a no brainer & we shouldnt have to fight so hard for any of this common sense legislation but it is what it is so we keep calling & faxing..

Here
we have yet another broken promise on transparency by the
super-secretive Obama administration. One can draw a conclusion, an
almost inescapable one, that the DHS report on the illegal alien
nun-killer contained damaging revelations, so now Obama appointees are
...scrubbing the report. As the report supposedly went to Secretary
Napolitano, this scandal seems to go to the top. I think we have a

www.judicialwatch.org Judicial Watch, the public interest group that investigates and prosecutes government corruption, announced today that the Obama administration broke a promise made to a federal court to release an internal memo detailing its investigation of an illegal alien who killed a Virginia nun in a drunk driving accident.

I read this article. The illegal alien killed this woman while driving intoxicated. He had two pending warrants for two previous drunk driving charges where he failed to appear to the court to answer the charges.

Instead of trying this criminal in an American court and holding him with no bail, he was released to the immigration officials who then released him on his own recognizance. He then disappeared.

This is totally insane. Why do we even have an immigration department if they just let criminals like this go?

I think that every state should change their laws so that an illegal alien who commits a crime in their state is held without bail, and must serve out whatever conviction he receives in the local court before he is given over to the federal officials, who are obviously either corrupt, incompetent, or both.

This situation is beyond ridiculous.

No need to do this. Just build a proper wall. But, the traitors who sit in Congress are never going to vote for it unless the voters make it clear to the traitors that if they don't vote for a wall, a proper wall, with the proper number of border guards manning the wall, then they will be replaced with a recall election.

I don't know if enough voters are upset enough over this issue to force the politicians to take real action.

We got rid of a lot of traitors in the last Election....We go on the offensive now in the new Congress so stay tuned..

RR57: I just wanted to commend your devotion to the immigration problem. The length of this thread and the number of posts speak volumns. The irony is that no matter how long this thread gets nothing gets done. With distracting issues like the events in Wisconsin, the lame stream media have an excuse to avoid other more serious problems. They played the Giffords card to their benefit and now I find it difficult to follow up on her progress. The Lib's are thru with her I guess and moved on. Lame stream media is the most dangerous tool the Lib's have.

This immigration issue gets shoved on the back burner and nothing gets done. It is probably the one most single issue that effects every phase of our every day lives. Keep up the good work and stay on top of it.

Thanks Russ Ive been following this closely since about 07....Its hard to keep up with @ times but I get quite a few hits on this thread so hopefully some poeple are getting educated & maybe spawn a few fellow activists along the way.....We got over the Dream Act hump so it should get easier from here on out but we still have to keep on our guard everyday....Excessive Immigration negatively affects many other aspects of our lives & is much more important than many people realise & thats what the thread is for..

This should get their attention.

A measure filed by State Rep. Lois Kolkhorst (R-Brenham) would allow any law enforcement agency that has custody of an illegal immigrant to take the illegal to 'the office of a U.S. Senator or Representative' and leave them there.

1200 WOAI news reprots the measure also allows county sheriff's deputies or city police officers to 'request an agent or employee of the United States Senator or United States Representative to sign a document acknowledging the release or discharge of the illegal immigrant at the senator's or representative's office.

The measure covers individuals who are 'not a citizen or national of the United States' and who is 'unlawfully present in the United States.'

Kolkhorst concedes the measure is a 'cry for help' to convince federal officials to secure the border, but she says she is serious about getting the measure approved by the Legislature.

The measure doesn't specify what the Senator or Congressman is supposed to do with the illegal immigrant, but calls on the law enforcement agency to 'maintain a record of each illegal immigrant released or discharged who is not transferred to the custody of the Untied States Immigration and Customs Enforcement.'

Illegal immigration has emerged as a top priority of the Republican super-majority in the Texas Legislature, and this is just one of several dozen bills introduced in Austin to deny jobs, housing, and government benefits to illegals.

Kolkhorst has already introduced a measure which would deny state benefits to illegal immigrants.

Several thousand people are expected to descend on the state capitol today to denounce the measures, and to call on the federal government, not the states, to handle matters related to immigration.

Friends of ALIPAC,

We need an immediate national response to aid our American supporters on the ground in Texas, as thousands of illegal aliens and their supporters converge on the state Capitol in Austin!

Big money is behind these marches, and the illegals are being bused in and provided with flags and signs. They are chanting things like "We won't stand for this type of legislation" and "No Arizona Hate in Texas."

Background articles
Austin, TX - Illegal Alien Marches culminate in rally at Capitol
http://www.alipac.us/article-6103-thread-1-0.html

PLEASE HELP ALIPAC's NATIONAL DEPLOYMENT TO TEXAS

When a mob of illegal aliens swarmed the legislature in Georgia trying to derail our legislation, ALIPAC responded quickly and our bills passed.

When another mob gathered in Arizona last year and national organizations that support Amnesty tried to stop our bills, ALIPAC responded and we won.

Now, it is time for us to defend the work of the pro American legislators in Texas.

We need ALIPAC supporters in EVERY state to assist Texans today by following these simple steps.

1. Craft your own personalized version of our sample message below.

"I'm calling/writing today to ask Texas lawmakers to support American workers, students, taxpayers, and voters who are being harmed and victimized by illegal immigration. Texans are being displaced and replaced in their jobs, classroom seats, and elections by illegal aliens that should not be in our country. Please crack down on sanctuary cities and pass a stronger version of Arizona's historic law in 2011. Please stand with Americans against the illegal immigrants protesting in Austin."

2. Pick up your phone and use the contact links below to start calling as many members of the Texas legislature as possible. Calls coming in from ALIPAC supporters on the ground in Texas, combined with calls coming in from many other states can have a big impact!

STATE HOUSE:

STATE SENATE:

3. Follow up your distinct and personalized message to each lawmaker with a written version sent by email, fax, or letter. Remember that calls followed by written copies are the most effective way to influence lawmakers short of face-to-face meetings.

If you would like to review ALIPAC's collection of bills filed in Texas this year to see which ones you favor the most, please visit our tracking link for Texas at this link...

Texas is where ALIPAC's second largest support and volunteer bases reside. When we have needed volunteers and donors to help other states, Texans have brought that support.

Now it is our turn to help our folks in Texas as illegal aliens and their supporters march on our Capitol trying to stop our bills!

Let's roll!

Tell Eli Lilly Pharmaceuticals to Stop the Pro-Illegal Worker Rhetoric

This new fax has been posted in your Action Buffet based on your answers to the Interest Survey.
You can find this fax by proceeding to
http://www.numbersusa.com/faxes?ID=12735
You are receiving this special fax opportunity because you indicated on your interests survey that you believe "unfair job competition / wage depression" increases immigration numbers.

Eli Lilly, a major pharmaceuticals company headquartered in Indianapolis, had the following to say about SB 590, piece of legislation in Indiana that would require employers to use E-Verify and make it difficult for illegal aliens to continue to take Indiana jobs:
Our ability to thrive in Indiana is dependent on an environment that is welcoming, and that is now threatened.... Anti-immigration and English-only legislation make it difficult to recruit new and educated workers and retain current employees in our Indiana communities, who simply will not move to and live in a state that is seen as unwelcoming
However, the bill's sponsor, Indiana State Sen. Mike Delph, said the following:
Those businesses that violate the law and benefit from cheap labor need to stop it, or we're going to come after them.... I don't understand why a state that enforces the rule of law is going to hurt legitimate business interests.
Please send a fax to Eli Lilly and let the company know you do not appreciate the way they are opposing the rule of law and standing on the side of illegal aliens.

You can read more about the story here.

Alert! Make E-Verify mandatory with the E-LAW Act!For years, we have struggled to maintain the current, voluntary E-Verify program, which must be periodically renewed. Now, Rep. John Carter (R-TX) has introduced HR 800 to require all employers to use E-Verify for both new and existing employees. The Jobs Recovery by Ensuring a Legal American Workforce Act of 2011, the E-LAW Act, has both Democratic and Republican co-sponsors.

The voluntary E-Verify program helps those companies who want to, or are willing to, comply with our laws, but it will not affect unscrupulous businesses who purposely seek to exploit illegal immigrant labor. HR 800 would require employers to use the program, based on a phased-in timeline. The timeline would require the largest companies to comply within one year of enactment. Smaller companies would have up to two years to adopt the program.

Illegal Immigration and Low Wage Labor

By Lee Cary

Leprechauns, unicorns, and the assertion that illegal immigrants take jobs Americans won't do -- they're all myths. Some myths are harmless, while others, like the medical benefits of bleeding, cause harm. The assertion about illegal immigrants taking unwanted jobs is not harmless. Low wage Americans bear a considerable burden.

As Will Rogers said,

"It's not what you don't know that hurts you. It's what you do know that ain't so."
The Farm Worker Myth

In recent years, ripening crops regularly are accompanied by stories suggesting we need illegal immigrant labor to bring in the harvest. For example, on July 20, 2007, a Wall Street Journal editorial entitled "Immigration Non-Harvest," breathlessly began with this paragraph:

"Peak harvest season is approaching in much of the country, and the biggest issue on the minds of many growers isn't the weather but how in the world they'll get their crops from the vine or off the tree. Thanks to Congress's immigration failure, farmers nationwide are facing their most serious labor shortage in years."
Visions of crops rotting in the fields make for vivid journalism. But in September, 2007 a Congressional Research Service (CRS) Report for Congress (updated from a 2004 version) entitled "Farm Labor Shortages and Immigration Policy," found little cause to worry about crops ripening and spoiling, stating that,

"Trends in the agricultural labor market generally do not suggest the existence of a nationwide shortage of domestically available farm workers...Employment on farms did not show the same upward trend as other industries during the 1990s expansion. While nonfarm jobs generally have risen thus far in the current decade, farm jobs generally have fallen. The length of time hired farm workers are employed has changed little or decreased over the years. Their unemployment rate has varied little and remains well above the U.S. average, and underemployment among farm workers also remains substantial. These agricultural employees earn about 50 cents for every dollar paid to other employees in the private sector."
Any significant shortage of farm workers ought to have been reflected in an increase in their wages, according to the law of supply and demand. But, from 2001 to 2006, the ratio of hourly field worker wages (those engaged in planting, rending and harvesting crops) to private nonfarm worker wages maintained a constant 0.54 for six consecutive years. That doesn't preclude the existence of temporary spot shortages, but it does argue against a systemic shortage of farm workers.

[A 2007 study written by Philip Martin, a professor of agricultural and resource economics at the University of California, Davis, for the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) entitled "Farm Labor shortages: How Real? What Response" further substantiated the conclusions of the CRS Report, and, consequently, challenges the premise of the WSJ editorial.]

Busting The Myth Across Industries

Employment statistics invariably lag behind the calendar. A March 2006 CIS study of the top 22 occupations in 2005 indicated that in no occupational category did immigrant employees outnumber native employees. In other words, native-born U.S. workers are already doing jobs where high concentrations of illegal immigrant are also employed. The largest share of immigrant employees was 44.7%, and the category was "Farming, fishing and forestry." The largest raw number of immigrant employees was in "Construction and extraction" where 2,209,000 immigrants (26.1% of the total labor force) were outnumbered by 6,250,000 native employees.

A deeper examination into statistics that focuses on less-educated workers (high school degree or less) indicates a higher concentration among immigrant employees. In "Farming, fishing and forestry," less-educated immigrants outnumber natives 364,000 to 338,000. But, there were an estimated 56,000 unemployed (14.2%) native workers in that category. In construction, native unemployment was 12.1% with 577,000 unemployed native workers.

The point: low-skilled illegal immigrant workers are wage leveraging native workers out of the occupational categories typically cited by perpetuators of the myth. The job categories include, but not limited to: farm workers, construction laborers, cleaning and maintenance providers, and food preparers.

Here's one example of that wage-leveraging impact from the Federation of American Immigration Reform (FAIR):

"In Los Angeles, unionized black janitors had been earning $12 an hour, with benefits. But with the advent of subcontractors who compose roaming crews of Mexican and El Salvadoran laborers, the pay dropped to the minimum wage of $3.35 per hour. Within two years, the unionized crews had all been displaced by the foreign ones, and without any other skills, most of the native workforce did not find new work."
The myth becomes truth if amended to read: Illegal immigrants accept jobs that American workers won't do for poverty level wages and no benefits (including healthcare).

The Truth Behind The Myth

Some conspiracy theorists claim that an open borders policy aims to create poverty in the U.S. while relieving poverty in Mexico as part of a grand scheme to eventually unite the two countries into one, minimally in the style of a European Union. The truth, though, is alluded to in a December 2006 "Special Report" entitled "Undocumented Immigrants In Texas: A financial Analysis of the Impact to the State Budget and Economy," released by Carole Keeton Strayhorn, Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts.

Strayhorn, the mother of President George W. Bush's former press secretary, Scott McClellan, and an unsuccessful opponent of Texas Governor Rick Perry in the last election, offered this summary of her study:

"The absence of the estimated 1.4 million undocumented immigrants in Texas in fiscal 2005 would have been a loss to our gross state product of $17.7 billion. Undocumented immigrants produced $1.58 billion in state revenues, which exceeded the $1.16 billion in state services they received. However, local governments bore the burden of $1.44 billion in uncompensated health care costs and local law enforcement costs not paid for by the state."
In other words, sure there are costs involved in hiring "undocumented workers." But, forget the laws against illegal immigration and employing illegal immigrants, say some. The benefits are good for the Texas economy and outweigh the costs.

Two famous, now deceased, Americans warned us against uncontrolled immigration. Barbara Jordan, Chair of the U.S. Commission on Immigration Reform, testifying before a Joint Congressional Committee on June 28, 1995, said,

"The Commission recommends the elimination of the admission [as legal immigrants] of unskilled workers. Unless there is another compelling interest, such as in the entry of nuclear families and refugees, it is not in the national interest to admit unskilled workers. Especially when the U.S. economy is showing difficulty in absorbing disadvantaged workers and efforts towards welfare reform indicate that many unskilled Americans will be entering the labor force."

Jordan's warnings were ignored, as were the words earlier of the founder and president of the American Federation of Labor, Samuel Gompers, who, in a Letter to Congress in March, 1924, wrote:

"America must not be overwhelmed. Every effort to enact immigration legislation must expect to meet...two hostile forces of considerable strength. One of these is composed of corporation employers who desire to employ physical strength (broad backs) at the lowest possible wage and who prefer a rapidly revolving labor supply at low wages to a regular supply of American wage earners at fair wages. The other is composed of racial groups in the United States who oppose all restrictive legislation because they want the doors left open for an influx of their countrymen regardless of the menace to the people of their adopted country."
To paraphrase Will Rogers, it's not the warnings you don't hear that hurt you; it's the ones you hear and don't heed.
