[h=1]Jim Irsay: Andrew Luck “knows the pressures” that come with contract[/h] Posted by Darin Gantt on August 3, 2016, 6:13 AM EDT

But in explaining how the injury to
Andrew Luck torpedoed the Colts’ season last year, owner Jim Irsay also pointed to all the other many things that were screwed up about the 2015 Colts — who were better when Luck wasn’t playing.
Irsay pointed to the constant concerns about Chuck Pagano’s contract and his relationship with General Manager Ryan Grigson, which was resolved by a new deal and lashing the two of them together.
“Last year,
it wasn’t that there was some distraction or Chuck’s lame-duck status or Ryan and Chuck’s relationship was difficult, so that made us struggle,” Irsay said, via Stephen Holder of the
Indianapolis Star. “Really, it was more of a year where our franchise quarterback got hurt. If that doesn’t happen, who knows what kind of year we would have had?”
Of course, Luck wasn’t playing his best football when he was well enough to stand, with 15 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in seven games, for a career-low 74.9 passer rating and a 2-5 record in games he played.
But that didn’t deter Irsay from giving him a giant contract, and the expectations that come along with it.
“Every year that Andrew is in the discussion about being the MVP of the league type of guy, (then) we are having a great year,” Irsay said. “It’s a quarterback-driven league. There’s no question about it. We want to do everything we can to get him in the position to play great and be in that three or four guys in the league that’s talked about for the MVP. That’s the way it should be every year.
“He’s up to the challenge. He knows the pressures that come with being Andrew Luck.”
The first step is overcoming the pressure of all the things wrong with the Colts that aren’t Andrew Luck.
