LOL, ticos are some of the most unhealthy eaters I've ever seen. Maybe they should eat a little more rice and beans and lay off the fried chicken, cakes, and candy.

So you think ticos eat more fried chicken, cakes and candy than people in the US? Dude, when was the last time you were there? That, burgers and pizza is all they eat.

And talk about frying, you guys put southerners to shame with your love of all things greasy. Fried leftover rice and beans, with fried eggs, some fried hotdog, and a little fried plantain for breakfast, often topped with sour cream and some homemade fried tortillas on the side. If that doesnt sum up the tico cuisine I dont know what does.

I dunno who the hell fries rice and beans, I´ve never ever seen it. Fried eggs and plantains fried with Canola Spray, yes. Tortillas are not fried. Get light sour cream.

Fried eggs are healthier than scrambled eggs cause of the smaller contact surface they soak up less fat.

Traditional tico diet is way healthier than gringo food.

olla de carne

sopa negra

lengua (don't make any nasty jokes about this shit, I actually like it)

picadillo de carne

you can also add stuff like chiverre (which I don't like) or arroz con leche

all that is stuff that normal ticos eat (and I don't find them the least unhealthy)

I am talking about what my mom cooked for me, not what you get in the first 'soda' that you walk into looking for a 1000 colones dish (cooked at the lowest possible cost)

All the things I mentioned .....I ate on a regular basis

"ate" being the key word here. Im seeing alot more fried and a lot less boiled than I did when I first stepped off the plane nine years ago.

and in there I may agree with you, its totally possible that there has been a change in the way we cook (but I don't have any evidence or example of that as my immediate family still cooks the same way)

now that you mentioned boiled........I sure crave for eating picadillo de chayote........

But you atleast eat pinto everyday, or when possible? And if so please elaborate as to what your perfect pinto entails. Old Days or new days, yall still some greasy bastards.

I don't know why we are even having this conversation about 'fatty' food, exactly 3 days ago in an airport in the US (deep into the US not Miami or Los Angeles but right in the 'heartland') I ordered some food and it was so fucking fatty.....that I took three bites out of it and left the rest

Anyone eating what I ordered (Something normal) would end up needing a quadruple bypass in just a few years

my wife is gringa so my diet has changed totally in the last 9 years, rice is a rare ocassion as I don't feel like asking her to cook something that she won't eat (even though her version of the Tico rice is not that bad)

but the calories I don't get from the rice I simply get from the mashed potatoes

my ideal meal would be a casado (beef/salad/little bit of platain and rice, you got all the components there.....vegetables/protein/carbohydrates)

the thing is, Costa Rica 'tipico' meal is designed for campesinos.....those guys need every bit of energy they can get ...from the moment they wake up at 4 AM or earlier....to the moment they go to bed.....if not just try to do for one hour what these guys do all day

now that many of us sit on our asses for many hours.......salads are probably better suited

What did you order? Chicharrones?

No, stupid me ordered some nachos....and what came out was a melted 'mass' of some sort of nacho with burned out cheese and what looked like coagulated oil or manteca

btw I like chicharrones...but just like everything else you have mentioned ....its something that we eat 'every now and then'

lets put it this way

a normal Tico has chicharrones every now and then

the normal Gringo has french fries 'a lo grande' every OTHER day
