Seguin scores in OT, Stars beat Lightning 4-3
December 19, 2019
By The Associated Press

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) Tyler Seguin scored three minutes into overtime, Anton Khudobin stopped 45 shots, and the Dallas Stars beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-3 on Thursday night.

After Tampa Bay's Tyler Johnson missed a shot from close range, Alexander Radulov passed to Seguin, who skated in from left wing boards and got the winner from the low slot.

Dallas also got goals from Radulov, Radek Faksa, and Jason Dickinson. Khudobin stopped Yanni Gourde's shot during a 2-on-none break in the third.

Mikhail Sergachev, Alex Killorn and Ondrej Palat scored, and Andrei Vasilevskiy made 16 saves for the Lightning. Nikita Kucherov, the NHL MVP last season, had an assist after being benched for the third period and overtime in Tuesday night's 4-3 win over Ottawa following a costly turnover.

FLYERS 6, SABRES 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - James van Riemsdyk scored twice and Philadelphia took advantage of some sloppy defense and a strong power play to beat short-handed Buffalo.

The Sabres were without captain Jack Eichel, the NHL's second-leading goal scorer who was a late scratch after participating in pregame workouts with what was called an upper-body injury. The scratch put an end to Eichel's 17-game point scoring streak - the league's longest this season - because the NHL does not allow point streaks to continue because of missed games.

Buffalo deflected three shots past goaltender Carter Hutton to assist the rout.

Van Riemsdyk recorded his second two-goal game of the season. Mikhail Vorobyev, Matt Niskanen, Ivan Provorov and Tyler Pitlick were credited with goals for Philadelphia, who put 29 shots on Hutton in the victory. The Flyers were 3 for 5 with the man advantage Thursday.

Flyers goaltender Carter had 16 saves.

Victor Olofsson added his 15th goal midway through the third period for the Sabres. Hutton finished with 22 saves.

BLUE JACKETS 3, KINGS 2, OT

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Pierre-Luc Dubois scored in overtime, Zach Werenski had a goal and an assist, and Columbus rallied to beat Los Angeles.

Boone Jenner scored with 1:43 remaining to force overtime for the Blue Jackets, who won after trailing in the first period for the second time this season. Dubois got the winner 1:11 into overtime when he took a tape-to-tape pass from Gustav Nyquist on a 2-on-2 rush.

Adrian Kempe and Jeff Carter scored for the Kings, who lost in overtime for the second time in four games. Los Angeles was beaten after leading for two periods for the first time this season.

Joonas Korpisalo stopped 23 shots to earn his 15th win of the season. Jack Campbell made 25 saves for the Kings.

ISLANDERS 3, BRUINS 2, SO

BOSTON (AP) - Matthew Barzal scored in regulation and the shootout as New York beat Boston.

In the shootout, Jordan Eberle and Barzal scored for the Islanders. David Pastrnak scored for the Bruins. Brad Marchand's attempt to extend the shootout was stymied by Islanders goalie Semyon Varlamov.

Varlamov had 27 saves as New York snapped a seven-game losing streak to Boston. The Islanders have won four of five.

Anders Bjork and Torey Krug scored for Boston. The Bruins are winless in four straight at home and seven of eight overall.

New York's Johnny Boychuk scored for the first time in 21 games, tying the score at 1 when beat a screened Tuukka Rask with a shot from the blue line at 3:26 of the second.

SENATORS 5, PREDATORS 4, OT

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) - Anthony Duclair scored a power-play goal 2:40 into overtime, giving goaltender Marcus Hogberg his first NHL win as Ottawa beat Nashville.

Hogberg, an emergency recall for the Senators after Anders Nilsson became ill, stopped 33 shots.

Colin White, Vladimir Namestnikov, Artem Anisimov and Brady Tkachuk also scored for the Senators, who recovered after blowing a 4-1 lead.

Craig Smith, Rocco Grimaldi, Ryan Johansen and Roman Josi scored for the Predators. Juuse Saros made 19 saves.

BLACKHAWKS 4, JETS 1

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Patrick Kane scored his 19th goal of the season and had three assists in Chicago's victory over Winnipeg.

Robin Lehner made 36 saves, Alex Nylander had a goal and assist and Dominik Kubalik and Erik Gustafsson also scored to help the Blackhawks rebound from a 4-1 home loss to Colorado on Wednesday night.

Tucker Poolman scored for Winnipeg and Connor Hellebuyck made 28 saves.

HURRICANES 3, AVALANCHE 1

DENVER (AP) - Andrei Svechnikov and Jaccob Slavin scored 1:17 apart and Carolina rallied past Colorado.

Sebastian Aho also scored, and James Reimer had 27 saves as Carolina extended its points streak to seven games and finished its road trip 4-0-1.

Nathan MacKinnon scored and Philipp Grubauer stopped 37 shots for the Avalanche, who lost despite leading with less than three minutes remaining.

CANADIENS 4, FLAMES 3, OT

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - Max Domi beat goalie Dave Rittich on an end-to-end overtime rush to give Montreal the win over Calgary.

Domi fired a low slap shot from just above the left faceoff circle that eluded Riitch's glove on the far side at 3:52 of the extra period.

Nick Suzuki pulled the Canadiens even at 3 with 9:02 left in regulation, deflecting Nick Cousins' pass over Rittich's head.

Carey Price made 24 saves, and Brendan Gallagher and Joel Armia added goals to help Montreal improve to 4-1 in its last five and 17-12-6 overall.

Matthew Tkachuk and Elias Lindholm each had a goal and an assist for Calgary. Oliver Kylington scored his first of the season, and Johnny Gaudreau had two assists. Rittich stopped 39 shots.

WILD 8, COYOTES 5

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Marcus Foligno and Mats Zuccarello each had a goal and two assists and Minnesota edged Arizona in a high-scoring game.

The Wild snapped a three-game losing streak, scoring eight goals on 33 shots, including an empty-net goal in the final seconds.

Arizona lost for the fourth time in five home games and the setback was compounded by an injury to No. 1 goaltender Darcy Kuemper, who had to be helped off the ice with 3:08 remaining in the game after spreading to make a save on a shot by Ryan Hartman.

Hartman, Eric Staal and Brad Hunt each had a goal and assist. Ryan Suter, Ryan Donato and Luke Kunin also scored for Minnesota. Devan Dubnyk had 35 saves in his first game since Nov. 16.

Jakob Chychrun scored two goals, and Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Clayton Keller and Phil Kessel also scored for the Coyotes. Newly acquired forward Taylor Hall, in his home debut, got the primary assist on Kessel's first-period goal.

Nick Schmaltz had three assists, raising his team-high point total to 27, and Alex Goligoski added two assists for the Coyotes.

6) Elon 42.2%

5) Binghamton 42.4%

4) Wofford 43.9%

3) Virginia Tech 44.9%

2) VMI 45.8%

1) North Florida 46.2%

Quote of the Day:
“Mike Tyson said it best: Every time he went in the ring, he was scared to death. Now once competition starts, your confidence comes from your preparation. But you can be confident and still have some fear in you, man. Like, I’m scared to death of Eastern Illinois. Fear is one of your biggest motivators, man.”
Texas Tech basketball coach Chris Beard

Friday’s quiz

CBS/FS1 basketball analyst Bill Raftery was once the basketball coach at which Big East school?

Thursday’s quiz
Other than Dak Prescott, Kellen Moore was the last QB to start for the Dallas Cowboys; he is the Cowboys’ offensive coordinator now.

Wednesday’s quiz

**************************

Friday’s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here……

13) Memphis Tigers’ freshman C James Wiseman declared for the NBA Draft, so his college career is over, almost before it started. Wiseman played three games for Memphis.

12) NBA needs to re-instate the rule in where kids can go right from high school to the NBA, then kids who want to play college ball will do that, and other kids can gamble on their future by going straight to the pros.

12) Auburn 79, NC State 73— Wolfpack PG Johnson has the ball A LOT, but if you’re going to dominate the ball, you can’t go 4-10 on foul line in a close, physical game. This was an NCAA tournament-style game, and Auburn remains unbeaten, avenging LY’s loss to NC State.

11) ESPN had the NC State-Auburn game Thursday; Jimmy Dykes was the analyst, and in the first half, Auburn football coach Gus Malzahn was a guest on the broadcast.

Turns out that 25 years ago, Dykes was the AD at Shiloh Christian School in Arkansas and he had to hire a football coach. He hired Malzahn, and the two have been friends since. Imagine going from being a high school coach to making seven figures coaching in the SEC?

10) Rockets 122, Clippers 117— LA had 69 points at halftime, leading by 15, but Rockets stormed back and outscored Clippers 36-18 in 3rd quarter. Harden had 28 points, 10 assists; Capela was +27 in 39:00, meaning Rockets were outscored by 22 points in 9:00 he sat out.

9) Seton Hall 52, Maryland 48— Red flag for Maryland, since Pirates were playing without their two best players. Terps shot 29% inside arc, 5-21 on arc. Not good.

8) Major league pitcher Wade Miley got pounded at the end of last season, after being pretty good prior to September; one day in late September he gets a text from a former teammate, which says: “Check your glove”

Turns out Miley was tipping his pitches, and the former teammate could see it. Miley signed a two-year deal with the Reds this winter; we’ll see if that was the only problem he had.

7) Baseball stuff:
— Brewers gave 2B Eric Sogard a 1-year, $4.5M deal, 1B Justin Smoak to a 1-year, $5M deal.
— Angels signed P Julio Teheran to a 1-year, $9M deal.

6) Stanford QB K.J. Costello has entered the NCAA transfer portal; he started 25 games for the Cardinal the last three years- he’ll be a graduate transfer.

5) Owners of pro teams shouldn’t be eligible for the Hall of Fame in that sport; those honors should be reserved for players, coaches, front office people. George Halas would be one of the exceptions, since he also played/coached.

4) Dallas Mavericks’ owner Mark Cuban is trying to learn Slovenian, Luka Doncic’s native language. Thats when you know you’re a big star, when your boss learns a new language because he wants you to stick around.

3) The last time a team won consecutive basketball games at Duke/North Carolina was way back in 1975, when a Maryland team led by John Lucas/Brad Davis pulled it off.

2) Citadel 102, Longwood 99, 3OT— There were 84 3’s taken in this game, 78 2’s; Citadel was down 5 in second OT. Longwood took 16 FT’s in a 55:00 game; Kaelon Harris of Citadel was 13-14 by himself, in 48:00.

1) Oklahoma City Thunder players were among people evacuated from an Oklahoma City mall Thursday when an isolated shooting took place at the Penn Square Mall- a man was shot at the Foot Locker at the shopping complex.

The shooting victim was in critical but stable condition after being shot in the chest.

Sensational parlay play for this Sunday showdown, and the NHL best bets you need to make this weekend

Combining two prevailing trends could prove profitable this Sunday as the Calgary Flames visit the Dallas Stars. We look at the NHL bets you need to make this weekend.

The NHL season is heading toward the holiday break, with a three-day hiatus starting next Tuesday. Some teams will take that as a reason to go all out on the ice this weekend, while other clubs could get caught looking to some time off.

We breakdown the NHL odds and give you our best bets and pick predictions for this weekend’s hockey betting action.

NOT SO FAST

The Pittsburgh Penguins and Edmonton Oilers boast some of the biggest offensive star power in the NHL. So when they face off, you should expect fireworks, yes? No, as it turns out, these teams have been a sensational Under play in recent meetings as they prepare to square off Friday night at Rogers Place. Pittsburgh and Edmonton have combined for five or fewer goals in 10 of their previous 14 meetings, including a 2-1 Edmonton victory at PPG Paints Arena in their previous meeting November 2. And both teams come into their second and final tilt of the season with more Unders than Overs for the season.

GOING LOW

Speaking of low-scoring affairs, even casual hockey bettors know that the Anaheim Ducks and New York Islanders attract plenty of Under attention, so imagine the betting action when these teams square off Saturday afternoon at Nassau Coliseum. The Islanders enter the weekend with the fewest Overs in the entire Eastern Conference despite routinely seeing totals at 5.5 or 6. The Ducks, meanwhile, average 5.51 total goals scored through their first 35 games this season. And these teams have played plenty of Unders in recent history, combining for five or fewer goals in nine of their past 11 meetings.

ONE-SIDED RIVALRY

The Detroit Red Wings haven't been all that competitive this season and that lack of punch has been especially apparent in games against Toronto, as these Original Six rivals renew hostilities Saturday night at Scotiabank Arena. Toronto has looked dominant in each of the first two meetings between the teams this season, outscoring the Red Wings by a combined 11-2 count. And while the Maple Leafs have had their share of defensive and goaltending struggles this season, they own a respectable 2.94 GAA at home this season. We recommend the Under on Detroit's goal total in this one.

DOUBLE PLAY?

Combining two prevailing trends could prove profitable this Sunday as the Calgary Flames visit the Dallas Stars. The road team has been surprisingly bankable in the recent history between these teams, winning 13 of the previous 19 meetings dating back to the midway point of the 2013-14 season (though Dallas' 12-5-2 home record this season might sway bettors the other way.) And the Under has been a profitable option, as well, with the clubs scoring more than five goals in just three of their last 13 head-to-head tilts. Put it together, and the road team/Under double has cashed in five of their last 10 meetings.

GOALIE PROFILE: TRISTAN JARRY, PITTSBURGH PENGUINS

It's safe to say that the Penguins are in good hands in goal despite Matt Murray's struggles. Tristan Jarry has quickly emerged as this season's out-of-nowhere goaltending sensation, and he's only getting hotter as the season moves along. Jarry has racked up three shutouts over his past six starts and has been positively sensational so far in December, sporting a 1.31 goals-against average and a .955 save percentage. Not surprisingly, the Penguins have not only gone 5-1-0 in his six starts for the month, they're also 1-5 O/U while outscoring their opponents 16-9 over that span.

INJURY UPDATE: F JASON ZUCKER, MINNESOTA WILD

One of the Wild's top forwards is considered week-to-week. Jason Zucker suffered a lower-body injury that kept him out of Tuesday's 3-2 loss to the host Vegas Golden Knights, and he was sent home from the team's current road trip. The absence of Zucker, who ranks second on the team with 24 points (12 goals, 12 assists) in 34 games, is a big one for a Minnesota team that had been rolling offensively in December, averaging 3.33 goals per game. The Wild are also dealing with the injury absences of veteran center Mikko Koivu (lower body) and star defenseman Jared Spurgeon (hand).

HAT TRICK TRENDS

• There's a clear three-team hierarchy when it comes to the most profitable clubs in the league to date. The New York Islanders enter Thursday night with a +9.47 units won tally, good for a minuscule lead over the runner-up Colorado Avalanche (+9.32). The Washington Capitals (+8.82) are the only other team to have won more than eight units so far.

• Bettors should keep an eye out for Erik Furlatt refereeing assignments, especially those who love a good old-fashioned barn-burner. Furlatt has earned 8.25 units to the Over despite working just 13 games so far. Those contests have gone 11-2 to the Over while averaging a league-high 7.36 goals per game. No other official has seen an average of more than seven goals.

• Looking for an overall totals advantage? You're not getting one – at least, not over the past seven days. Oddsmakers have hit it right down the middle over the previous week, with 24 games going Over the total and 24 finishing below the number. The Under remains the slightly superior option for the season at 51.5 percent.

Acciari records 2nd straight hat trick, Florida tops Stars
December 20, 2019
By The Associated Press

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) Noel Acciari completed his second straight hat trick with a penalty shot and added an assist in Floridaâ??s five-goal second period in the Panthersâ?? 7-4 victory over the Dallas Stars on Friday night.

Acciari had the natural hat trick in a Florida-record 3:59 span, pushing his season goals total to a career-high 11.

The 28-year-old former Providence player began the run at 7:26 of the second, struck again at 7:58, and slipped his first career penalty shot through goalie Anton Khudobinâ??s pads with 8:35 left in the period to make it 7-1. Acciari got the short-handed penalty shot after he was hooked by John Klingberg on a breakaway.

Acciari had his first career three-goal game Tuesday night in a 6-1 victory over Ottawa.

Jonathan Huberdeau had a goal and three assists for a second consecutive four-point outing, and Vincent Trocheck added a goal and two assists. Anton Stralman and Colton Sceviour also scored, Aleksander Barkov had two assists, and Sergei Bobrovsky made 27 saves.

CAPITALS 6, DEVILS 3

NEWARK, N,J. (AP) - Nicklas Backstrom had two goals and two assists, and Washington beat New Jersey.

Alex Ovechkin and John Carlson each had a goal and an assist as the Capitals rebounded from Monday's 3-0 loss at Columbus, improving to 16-3-1 on the road. Jonas Siegenthaler and Richard Panik also scored, and rookie Ilya Samsonov made 24 saves.

Washington's 26-6-5 record is currently the NHL's best. It is the only team in the league not to lose consecutive games in regulation this season.

Kyle Palmieri, Blake Coleman and Miles Wood scored for the Devils, who were denied their first three-game winning streak of the season. Mackenzie Blackwood had 21 saves before being relieved by Gilles Senn in the third period.

The four points for Blackstrom gave him 900 in his career.

MAPLE LEAFS 6, RANGERS 3

NEW YORK (AP) - William Nylander and Mitchell Marner each scored their second goal of the game early in the third period as Toronto doubled up New York.

Pierre Engvall and Ilya Mikheyev also scored, and Frederik Andersen made 19 saves as Toronto won its third straight.

Brady Skjei, Ryan Strome and Pavel Buchnevich scored for New York. Alexandar Georgiev made 34 saves as the Rangersâ?? losing streak reached three games.

1) Western Illinois 85%

Quote of the Day:
“I think the chess game still is going to be in play but … the endgame decisions are going to be drastically different. You’ll see from game No. 1. We’re all going to have to learn a different type of strategy.”
Bud Black, on the new rule about relievers having to face three hitters

Saturday’s List of 13 Clearing out a cluttered mind…….

13) Lot of times when I’m writing this space late at night, I turn the TV off and listen to podcasts on my phone. Thought it would be a good idea to post some of those podcasts and recommend them to you, so every so often, I’m going to do that.

If you hate the podcasts, forget that I recommended them; if you enjoy them, you’re welcome.

a) The Steam Room, with Ernie Johnson/Charles Barkley. If you like Inside the NBA on TV, you’ll love this podcast, because Barkley runs amok as Ernie points him in the right direction.

b) The Moment, with Brian Koppelman, who co-writes Billions and co-wrote Rounders, Oceans 13. He talks to a variety of people who are successful, whether in show business, cooking, sports (his podcast with JJ Redick was kind of random, but interesting).

His podcast with the great author John Grisham was excellent.

12) There is a bowl game in Phoenix every year called the Cheez-It Bowl- some thoughts:
— I ate my share of Cheez-Its when I was a kid, because my dad liked them, so they were always around.
— Wasn’t terribly fond of Cheez-Its; too dry. It surprises me that they’ve lasted this long. The puffed-up Doritos they sold a few years ago were great, but they never caught on. Why?
— For the Cheez-It people to have enough money to sponsor a bowl is alarming, well not alarming, but very surprising.

Like you give a rat’s ass what I think of Cheez-Its. Lets move on…….

11) In case you were wondering, Pete Rose had 51 games in his carer with 7+ plate appearances; Rickey Henderson had 43. No one else has/had more than 32.

10) They had G-League showcase games on ESPNU Friday, mostly players who left college early but haven’t stuck in the NBA. Kids go from playing in front of 15,000 fans to playing in a casino events center, where there is a wall right behind the benches. Has to be kind of a reality check.

9) The minimum salary for NBA rookies is $898,310, which is why the most talented kids don’t want to play college basketball; the really big money is in that second contract, though, so you better have your game ready when you get to the pros. Not a lot of patience there.

Guys in the G-League make less money than players who go overseas to play ball.

8) There are also 18 referees who split their time between the NBA and G-League; when you see one of these G-League games, keep in mind that the refs are trying out for the bigtime, too.

7) Baseball stuff:
— Minnesota Twins gave P Tyler Clippard a one-year deal is worth $2.7M.
— Chicago White Sox signed P Gio Gonzalez to a one-year deal worth $4.5M.
— C Martin Maldonado signed a 2-year deal with Houston, worth $7M.
— 2B Ian Kinsler announced his retirement; he had 1,999 career hits.

6) I have a baseball cap collection that is too big, but had to look anyway when the new XFL caps came out. Think the Seattle team has the best logo, but it looks an awful lot like UAB’s logo. Houston’s logo is a smaller version of the old Houston Oilers’ logo.

5) Back when John Chaney was a highly-successful coach at Temple (1982-2006), if one of his players got two fouls in the first half, Chaney would take him out and the kid would sit for the rest of the half. It became a thing in college basketball, just about everyone did it.

Last few years, coaches are starting to play kids more with two fouls in first half, partially because rosters are generally thinner now, because of the transfer epidemic. Not a lot of teams go more than eight quality players deep.

4) Giants are going back to Daniel Jones at QB for their game at Washington Sunday.

3) Georgia 87, SMU 85 2OT— Fun game to watch; not sure how good these teams are, but they are evenly matched. SMU was only 8-32 on arc, but had 26 offensive rebounds. Three of their guys played 45:00, a 4th kid played 42:00. Georgia played ten guys 10:00+; no one played more than 37:00.

2) Buffalo 31, Charlotte 9— Bulls get their first bowl win in their 4th try; this was Charlotte’s first-ever bowl. Jaret Patterson ran for 173 yards and two TD’s for Buffalo.

1) Kent State 51, Utah State 41— Kent is coached by 33-year old Sean Lewis, the youngest I-A coach in the country. This was their first bowl win ever, only their fourth bowl ever. Kent went 7-6 TY, after being 12-47 the previous five years.

This might wind up being the most fun bowl game this year, unless you bet the under.

People at this game outside of Dallas looked like they were at Lambeau Field in January; they were dressed warmer than I was this week, when it was 10 degrees here in Albany. According to my phone, it was 47 degrees at the game. Oy.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Blake Wheeler had a goal and assist to become the all-time leading scorer in franchise history and Connor Hellebuyck made 31 saves for his third shutout of the season to lead Winnipeg.

Wheelerâ??s 616 points surpassed the previous mark set by Ilya Kovalchuk, who played for the franchise when it was the Atlanta Thrashers.

Alex Stalock allowed six goals on 28 shots in goal for Minnesota before being removed midway through third period. Devan Dubnyk finished with two saves for the Wild, who have lost three of four.

The Capitals outshot the Lightning 35-27 and handed them their third loss in four games. Holtby didn't get tested much in the first two periods but was at his best on a late 5-on-3 penalty kill when he made big stops on Tyler Johnson and Victor Hedman.

Defenseman Radko Gudas scored his first goal with the Capitals, and Nic Dowd added an empty-netter. NHL-leading Washington improved to 5-0-1 in the second half of back-to-backs this season.

Reigning MVP Nikita Kucherov scored his 12th of the season for the Lightning, and Curtis McIlhenny finished with 32 saves.

TORONTO (AP) - Michael Hutchinson made 29 saves in his first win of the season, Toronto got its fourth straight win.

Zach Hyman and Auston Matthews each had two goals and an assist for the Maple Leafs, who won with its backup for the first time this season.

Tyler Bertuzzi scored for the Red Wings, who have lost 15 of 17.

Jonathan Bernier started in net for Detroit. He stopped the three shots he faced before leaving the game less than seven minutes in due to a lower-body injury. Calvin Pickard came on in relief and made 16 saves in the loss.

BLUE JACKETS 5, DEVILS 1

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Oliver Bjorkstrand scored twice in the first-period, Joonas Korpisalo stopped 21 shots and Columbus cruised past New Jersey.

Vladislav Gavrikov, Zach Werenski and Gustav Nyquist also scored for Blue Jackets, who won their fourth straight despite being ravaged by injuries. They have earned at least one point in a season-high seven consecutive games (5-0-2).

Will Butcher scored for the Devils and Gilles Senn, starting his first NHL game, made 34 saves.

OILERS 4, CANADIENS 3

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - Riley Sheahan got the tiebreaking goal in the third period, lifting Edmonton past Montreal.

Leon Draisaitl, Connor McDavid and Josh Archibald each had a goal and an assist to help the Oilers snap a two-game skid and win for just the second time in eight games (2-5-1). Mikko Koskinen stopped 23 shots.

Jeff Petry, Phillip Danault and Max Domi scored for the Canadiens, who had won two straight. Carey Price had 22 saves.

Edmonton led 2-0 and 3-2, with Montreal tying the score twice - the last when Domi beat Koskinen glove side a minute into the third period. Sheahan regained the lead for the Oilers just over six minutes later on a 2-on-1 with Archibald.

BLUES 5, SHARKS 2

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Alex Pietrangelo scored twice in the third period, Jake Allen had 34 saves and St. Louis beat San Jose in a rematch of last seasonâ??s Western Conference finals.

Jaden Schwartz scored and had two assists, and Jordan Kyrou also scored for the Blues. The defending Stanley Cup champions won their fifth straight and improved to 16-2-3 against Western Conference opponents and 11-4-3 on the road.

Brent Burns and newly acquired Stefan Noesen scored for San Jose, which has lost eight of nine.

BLACKHAWKS 5, AVALANCHE 3

DENVER (AP) - Dominik Kubalik scored the go-ahead goal with 3:17 left and Chicago rallied to beat Colorado.

Patrick Kane and Kirby Dach scored 28 seconds apart in Chicago's four-goal third period, and Jonathan Toews had a goal and two assists to help the Blackhawks salvage the finale of their four-game season series with the Avalanche.

Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday…….

13) Texans 23, Bucs 20:
— Houston clinches the AFC South with this win.
— Texans’ first TD scored on a pick-6.
— Houston had three FG’s, only one TD on four drives to red zone.

— Bucs’ first five possessions: three INT’s, a FG and a blocked FG.
— Tampa Bay outgained Houston, 435-229.
— If Jameis Winston played for the Rams, I’d have a nervous breakdown.

12) Patriots 24, Bills 17:
— Buffalo lost 16-10/24-17 in its two games vs NE this season.
— Bills are already in playoffs, will likely play winner of AFC South in Wild Card.
— Buffalo was only 2-11 on third down, Patriots 7-14.

— New England clinches AFC East, has game lead over KC for the #2 seed.
— Patriots lost field position by 7 yards, only 3rd time that happened this year.
— NE’s 2nd half possessions: 4 drives, 28 plays, 182 yards, TD, two FG’s.

11) 49ers 34, Rams 31:
— Rams’ first five drives: 209 yards, three TD’s.
— Rams’ last eight drives: 167 yards, one TD/one FG/one pick-6
— Rams are 1-3 this year in games decided by 6 or fewer points.

— Gould kicked a 33-yard FG at the gun for the win.
— 49ers are half-game up on Seattle in NFC West; they play next week.
— This was SF’s 4th game in row decided by 3 or fewer points, or in last 0:10.

10) Colorado 78, Dayton 76 OT— Buffs hit a 3 at the buzzer to win this game, which was a lot like an NCAA tourney game; two good teams on a neutral floor.

Dayton led 19-5 early on, trailed by 8 with 7:51 left. They could meet again in March.

9) St John’s 68, Arizona 67— This game was part of the Al Attles Classic in San Francisco; Attles coached the Warriors when they won the 1974 NBA title, when their best player was Rick Barry, one of the most underrated basketball players ever.

Bill Walton was the TV analyst on this game; he spoke the truth when he talked about how Barry is one of the 10-12 best players ever. He was as good as Larry Bird, but he played before the NBA took off inn popularity and before ESPN began in the early 80’s.

Mike Anderson is doing a nice job in his first year at St John’s; they’re 11-2 after this upset win.

8) Ohio State 71, Kentucky 65— Wildcats are 8-3 vs schedule #310; they were outscored 21-8 on foul line, are shooting 27.8% on arc this year (#323). Meanwhile, John Calipari’s son Brad plays for the Detroit Titans, where he is shooting 45.3% on the arc this year- go figure.

7) College basketball upsets:
— Florida A&M (+13.5) 71, Seattle 57
— St John’s (+11) 68, Arizona 67
— North Dakota (+9) 75, Nebraska 74
— Northwestern State (+7.5) 67, Lamar 61
— Green Bay (+6.5) 85, Northern Illinois 84
— Texas A&M (+6.5) 64, Oregon State 49
— Colorado (+5.5) 78, Dayton 76 OT

6) Villanova 56, Kansas 55— Wildcats hit a 3-pointer with 0:24 left for the win. Kansas is the 5th team to lose this year while ranked #1 in country. Gonzaga becomes the new #1.

5) Baseball stuff:
— White Sox signed P Dallas Keuchel to a 3-year, $55.5M contract.
— Detroit signed 1B CJ Cron, 2B Jonathan Schoop to 1-year, $6.1M contracts. Tigers will be Schoop’s 4th team in four years.

4) Florida State 66, South Florida 60— Seminoles ended game on a 21-3 run; South Florida pretty much imploded down the stretch- they led 57-47 with 6:20 left.

3) Colorado State 111, Tulsa 104, 3OT— Rams blew an 8-point lead with 1:08 left in regulation, then rallied back from down 89-86 with 0:59 left in first OT. Rams were minus-8 in turnovers; they had three guys play 46:00+.

2) One of the reasons a lot of college basketball teams like to play these neutral court games just before Christmas, is that it is legal for them to pay for kids’ trips home from the neutral site to wherever the player lives, os he can have a few days off for Christmas.

1) Good news is that tonight it starts getting dark later every day; its all downhill until spring. Lot of bowl games and college hoop coming up in the next week, as 2019 winds down to its end.
