A CASE OF THE MONDAYS

Monday gives us just one game where the Pittsburgh Penguins will entertain the Ottawa Senators who will be on the backend of a back-to-back. Pittsburgh has won both of its games following the Christmas break, potting 11 goals in the process.

The Senators have allowed the third-most goals against in their 10 games leading up to the break at 3.4 goals per game and were losers of eight of their last nine road games. With the Sens taking close to 10 minutes in penalties in December and having allowed four or more goals in four of their last five, we are hitting the Pens’ team total of 3.5 and playing the Over.

COUNTDOWN TO NEW YEARS

New Year’s Eve gives us a full slate of hockey, starting at 1 PM ET. If you’re looking for some all-day action, there are some decent heavy favorites in each of the major time slots.

Starting with the 1 PM game, we are taking the Bruins as road favorites in New Jersey as Boston has won the last five regular-season matchups between the two sides.

At 3 PM, we are adding the Vegas Golden Knights ML as they play host to the Anaheim Ducks. The Knights have won the last three matchups in Vegas by a combined score of 13-3 and have won four of their last five home games heading into Tuesday.

For the evening matches, we like the Lightning ML and Flames ML. Tampa Bay will have a decent price as a road favorite and have handed the Sabres a loss in six straight matchups while the Blackhawks have struggled to pick up two points against the Flames as they have dropped six in a row against Calgary.

Taking the Bruins, Knights, Lightning and Flames on a four-team ML parlay will give you something to check throughout the holiday and could make you up to four to five times your bet just before the countdown to midnight.

OVER INTO 2020

Both the New York Rangers and Edmonton Oilers are allowing just under four goals per game in their last five. As of Sunday, the Rangers haven’t hit an Under in their last seven games going 6-0-1 O/U while the Oilers are 2-1-2 O/U in their previous five.

The Oilers have had to rely on the powerplay as their offensive catalyst this year. Their power play is scoring at 30 percent on the year and will face the Rangers’ Bottom-10 penalty-killing unit.

The Rangers have potted five goals three separate times across their last four games and sit in eighth in expected goals for in December, but more importantly, have the most expected goals against this month.

Take the Tuesday night Over 6 and enjoy some of the last goals of 2019.

THE 2020 WINTER CLASSIC

The 2020 Winter Classic will be held in Dallas, Texas on Wednesday as the Predators and Stars will battle it out outdoors. With the unfamiliar conditions, this is a game that could easily fit into the Dallas Stars’ defensive-style of winning.

Dallas has the fourth-fewest goals against and the most points at home this year. In their 21 games in Texas, the Stars are conceding just 2.09 goals per game — the best mark in the league. We lean on the Under 5.5 but have trouble pulling the trigger with Nashville having allowed 11 goals in its two games back from the break.

We are going to take the home team ML in this outdoor game and may have to take the 3-way ML if the juice is on the heavy side of things on the 2-way ML.

GOALIE PROFILE: ELVIS MERZLIKINS, COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS

The Jackets find themselves a few points out a playoff spot thanks to winning five straight before the break and the stellar goaltending from Joonas Korpisalo. Unfortunately, their No. 1 tender was injured and helped off the ice on Sunday. Korpisalo had started 10 straight games and now the team will have to carry on with Elvis Merzlikins.

The Latvian goalie is winless in the NHL going 0-4-3 this year with a 3.41 goals against and a .889 save percentage. This is a massive blow to a Jackets team that was gaining an identity.

On Tuesday, the Jackets will face the Panthers at home. Florida beat Merzlikins 4-1 earlier this month and should have some value on the Money Line as a visiting team. Florida hasn’t won in Columbus since 2015 but facing the 25-year-old rookie goalie could change that.

INJURY UPDATE: F ILYA MIKHEYEV, TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS

The Toronto Maple Leafs have been hit with a slew of injuries of late. Forward Ilya Mikheyev sustained a scary cut to his wrist on Friday and will be re-evaluated in 90 days. The loss of the winger has shaken up the Leafs’ lineup as they have had to move their third-line center to the wing on the second line as well as promoting players from the Marlies.

The Buds also lost defenseman Jake Muzzin to a broken foot, which means they are a mess in terms of defensive responsibility with a center moving to wing and a handful of inexperienced players. We like the Over versus the Wild on Tuesday.

HAT TRICK TRENDS

• The New York Islanders bring the league’s best road Under record (4-10-3 O/U) to the league’s best home Over record in Washington (12-5-1 O/U) on Tuesday. The Caps are 1-3 O/U in their last four at home while the Islanders have hit the Under in six of their last nine road games (2-6-1 O/U)

• The Minnesota Wild are earning 1.53 points per game at home this year which is the best mark in the league. The Wild will host the Maple Leafs who have earned 13 of a possible 14 points over their last seven games. This hot but injured Leafs team should give the Wild some decent value at home on the Money Line.

• Heading into Sunday’s games, there were plenty of goals with teams coming out of the Christmas break. Out of the 34 games, the Over hit in 22 of them (64.7 %).

********************************************************

Tuesday’s List of 13: Our last home page of 2019……

13) If you’re an NFL head coach and your GM drafts a quarterback, you’d best have some job security, because these days, rookie QB’s play sooner than later, and they usually don’t play well, so the team loses and the coach gets fired. They don’t fire players very much.

2013– Mike Shanahan, Redskins (fired after RGIII’s 2nd year)
2014– Dennis Allen, Raiders (Carr)
2015– Ken Whisenhunt, Titans (Mariota)
2016– Jeff Fisher, Rams (Goff)
2017— John Fox, Bears (Trubisky)
2018— Steve Wilks, Cardinals (Rosen)
2018— Hue Jackson, Browns (Mayfield)
2018— Todd Bowles, Jets (Darnold)
2019— Jay Gruden, Redskins (Haskins)
2019— Pat Shurmur, Giants (Jones)

12) Doug Peterson (Wentz), Mike Smith (Ryan) did it right; they got hired as head coach the same year their team drafted a QB, which gives you time to grow together.

11) California 35, Illinois 20— Garbers threw for 272 yards, four TD’s, as Pac-12 evens its bowl record this month at 2-2.

10) Western Kentucky 23, Western Michigan 20— True freshman kicker nailed a 52-yard FG at the gun for the win; he missed a 29-yard FG at end of first half.

Hilltoppers outgained WMU 481-307, but threw a pick-6 in last minute of first half that tied score at 10-all. WKU finishes the season 9-4.

9) Louisville 38, Mississippi State 28— Sometimes life is simple; when you hear that one of Miss State’s QB’s couldn’t play in this game, because one of his teammates broke the orbital bone near his eye in a post-practice fracas, then you pick against that team.

8) College basketball upsets:
— Stetson (+21) 63, South Carolina 56
— South Carolina State (+11) 58, Jacksonville 52
— Green Bay (+5.5) 73, Northern Kentucky 59

7) Michigan State’s basketball team is 2-0 early on in the Big 14 standings; Northwestern is 0-2; the other 12 teams are all 1-1.

Northwestern lost to Hartford the other day, not a good sign for the Wildcats.

6) Cal State- Fullerton won 77-74 at UCLA Saturday, which isn’t good for Mick Cronin; losing to North Carolina or Michigan State is one thing, but losing to Big West teams, especially one with a 3-10 record and #275 ranking, is a huge red flag.

One of Cronin’s apologists tried to blame the talent former coach Steve Alford left behind, but Alford went to Nevada, inherited a total of two players (TWO!!!) from Eric Musselman and the Wolf Pack is 8-5. Maybe Alford is as good a coach as Cronin is.

This is the first UCLA roster without at least one McDonald’s All-American since the award was started in 1977, but plenty of solid D-I players weren’t McDonald’s All-Americans.

5) By the way, over the last 19 years, UCLA had never lost to a team ranked lower than #210 in the KenPom rankings; Fullerton was #284 before they upset the Bruins.

4) USC fired their defensive coordinator and special teams coach after its dismal performance in the Holiday Bowl Friday night.

3) In the NBA, Knicks have won one playoff series since 2001; they ain’t going to make it there this year, either. Too bad they can’t fire owners for gross incompetence.

2) Zion Williamson has a 5-year sneaker contract worth $15M a year but he still hasn’t played a game yet for the Pelicans.

1) From Zach Berman:
At Caesars sportsbook this summer, the over/under on passing yards for Carson Wentz this season was 4,040.5. You could wager whether Wentz would pass for more or less than 4,040.5 yards.

He finished with 4,039 yards; Sunday’s finale was played in a steady rain. Very bad beat.

Malkin scores twice, Pens beat Sens
December 30, 2019

PITTSBURGH (AP) Evgeni Malkin's goal in the first minute sparked the Pittsburgh Penguins to a victory that ended with distressing thud.
Malkin scored twice but teammate Jake Guentzel was injured right after getting his 20th of the season in the Penguins' 5-2 win Monday night over the Ottawa Senators.
Guentzel had a three-point night but left after scoring 6:55 into the third period. Guentzel, who was selected to his first All-Star Game on Monday, tapped one into a partially empty net off Malkin's feed, then crashed hard into the wall following contact with Ottawa's Thomas Chabot.
Guentzel immediately went to the dressing room after getting his 200th career point.
''I hope he's not out long,'' Malkin said. ''It didn't look good. But everyone understands it's hockey. It's tough. I need to play better next game if Jake doesn't play.''
Penguins coach Mike Sullivan didn't have an update on Guentzel.
''It was really scary,'' Sullivan said. ''Those are always dangerous when you fall that distance from the boards. He's being evaluated. We'll probably have more information on him (Tuesday).''
Malkin stretched his points streak to six games. He has seven goals and 24 points in his past 13 contests. Patric Hornqvist and Dominik Simon also scored the Penguins, who have won three straight and 10 of 12.
Tristan Jarry stopped 24 shots to win his sixth straight game. He has won eight of his last nine starts and allowed no more than two goals in 14 of 18 appearances this season.
Nick Paul scored twice for the Senators, who ended a five-game points streak. Paul has three goals in his last two games.
Marcus Hogberg made 28 saves for the Senators.
''We were unable to contain their top guys,'' Senators coach D.J. Smith said. ''Defensively in our zone and off the rush, Malkin just kind of ate us up tonight.''
Pittsburgh has won 14 of 22 games without captain Sidney Crosby, who has been out since November because of core muscle surgery. Crosby has recently started skating.
In 140 career games without Crosby, Malkin has 75 goals and 192 points. In 20 games without Crosby this season, Malkin has 11 goals and 32 points.
''We put him in a prominent role and he's responded in the right way,'' Sullivan said. ''He's been a dominant player night in and night out for us. Given the circumstances this team is under, we need him to be that guy.''
Malkin opened the scoring 27 seconds into the game when he beat Hogberg with a glove-side wrist shot during a 2-on-1. Guentzel assisted, giving him points in four straight. Guentzel has 12 goals and 29 points in his last 20 games.
Simon gave Pittsburgh a 2-0 lead at 11:44 of the first period. Simon was under pressure when he took a cross-ice pass and flipped a backhander past Hogberg from the side of the crease. It was his second goal in three games.
Paul scored at 4:21 of the second period for the Senators to make it 2-1, but Malkin regained Pittsburgh's two-goal advantage 1:41 later. Bryan Rust, who had the primary assist, has points in eight of his last nine games with seven goals and 15 points during that span.
Paul scored his second goal for the Senators at 15:58 of the second, but again, Pittsburgh immediately answered. Hornqvist scored 53 seconds after Paul's goal to give Pittsburgh a 4-2 lead entering the third period.
NOTES: Pittsburgh's 16 home wins are the most in the NHL. ... The Senators have three wins in 22 games at Pittsburgh's PPG Paints Arena since the building opened in 2010. ... Pittsburgh has eight straight wins and points in 11 consecutive home games against Ottawa dating to Feb. 13, 2013. ... Ottawa D Ron Hainsey, who won a Stanley Cup with Pittsburgh in 2017, missed his fourth straight game with a lower-body injury. ... Pittsburgh D Justin Schultz missed his fifth straight game with a lower-body injury.

In the Crease - Week 14
Joe Williams

For the Sweep

The Tampa Bay Lightning will roll into KeyBank Center on New Year's Eve looking for the season sweep of the Buffalo Sabres. These teams met in Buffalo back on Nov. 8, and the Lightning came away with a win with Andrei Vasilevskiy in the crease. He allowed two goals on 22 shots in that outing, and he is the projected started for Tuesday's game. He also took care of the Sabres at Ericsson Globe in Stockholm back on Nov. 25 in one of the two Global Series games in Sweden. He allowed two goals on 30 shots in his start opposite Hutton overseas.

For the aforementioned Hutton, it's been a strange ride. He started the season on fire, going 6-0-0 to fire out of the chute, but it's been a slow burn since. He hasn't won since Oct. 22, losing 10 consecutive starts. Instead of showing signs of life, Hutton has actually shown signs of getting worse, coughing up six goals in each of his past two starts, and four or more goals in six of his past seven appearances. That bodes well for the Lightning, who will have their brooms out in Buffalo.

Looking Ahead

Tuesday, Dec. 31

Montreal at Carolina:
The Canadiens return to PNC Arena for the first time since Oct 4, the regular season opener. Carey Price will be in the crease against the Hurricanes, and he is looking to avenge a 4-3 shootout loss in Raleigh when Petr Mrazek held on for the win. While the Canadiens have won four of the past 15 against Eastern Conference teams, they are 9-3 in the past 12 against winning sides. The Hurricanes are 32-14 in the past 46 games at PNC Arena, and 40-18 in the past 58 as a favorite, including 17-7 in the past 24 as a home favorite. PNC Arena has been a house of horrors for the Habs, as they're 0-5 in the past five visits to North Carolina's capital city. They're also 1-7 in the past eight meetings, with the home team 4-1 in the past five in this series, with the favorite 21-7 in the past 28 meetings.

N.Y. Rangers at Edmonton:
The Rangers and Oilers might be the final teams off the ice in the calendar year of 2019. They'll square off at Rogers Place in Edmonton with Alexandar Georgiev and Mike Smith projected to be in between the pipes for their respective sides. Georgiev made 44 saves last time out in an overtime win at Toronto, while Smith is in the midst of a four-start slide, going 0-3-1 to slip to 7-8-2 with a 3.12 goals-against average and .893 save percentage. Edmonton limps into 2020 with just one win in the past six home games, and they're 2-8 in the past 10 games overall, too.

Wednesday, Jan. 1

Nashville at Dallas:
The only game on New Year's Day takes place in the Cotton Bowl outdoors, and the weather forecast calls for temperatures in the mid-50's with plenty of clouds and no precipitation. Pekka Rinne and Ben Bishop are expected to lock horns and face each other. While the home team is just 3-8 in the previous 11 Winter Classic games, with six of the 11 games being decided by one goal. While we might see favorable weather conditions and a lack of sun beating down on the ice, the surface should still be rather sticky outdoors. Eight of the previous 11 Winter Classics have seen a total of five or fewer goals, so don't be surprised to see another low-scoring affair.

Thursday, Jan. 2

St. Louis at Colorado:
The Blues hold a rather sizeable lead over the Avalanche in the Central Division, but Colorado gets the defending champs in their barn looking to trim the lead. The Avalanche are also looking to avenge a sound 5-2 beating on Dec. 16 in St. Louis, as Jordan Binnington easily outdueled Philipp Grubauer. St. Louis also picked up a 3-1 win on Oct. 21 on the banks of the Mississippi River, but this will be the first meeting this season in the Mile High City. The last time the Blues were in town they came away with a 3-0 win on Feb. 16 last season, and the Blues are working on a six-game winning streak against the Avalanche dating back to the regular-season finale on April 7, 2018, a 5-2 win at Pepsi Center.

Philadelphia at Vegas:
The Fly Guys and Golden Knights square off in Sin City for the first game of the calendar year at T-Mobile Arena. These teams met Oct. 21 in the City of Brotherly Love, and they'll be looking to avenge an embarrassing 6-2 loss. Of course, not to make excuses, but VGK was using Oscar Dansk in an emergency start, his only appearance at the NHL level this season. For this home game they'll have All-Star and future Hall of Famer Marc-Andre Fleury back between the pipes. He is 15-8-3 with a 2.74 goals-against average and .912 save percentage with two shutouts, and he knows the Flyers well from his days with the cross-state rival Pittsburgh Penguins. Philly is one of a few teams with a winning record against Vegas in their brief history. They're 3-2 all-time against the Golden Knights, including a perfect 2-0 in their previous visits to T-Mobile Arena. They won 5-2 last season on Oct. 4, 2018, and they won 4-1 on Feb. 11, 2018.

Friday, Jan. 3

Washington at Carolina:
The Capitals and Hurricanes are quickly becoming rivals, as these teams had a contentious seven-game playoff series last season, some tight and angry preseason battles, and it has spilled over into the regular season. They have played each other frequently lately, too, as the Caps are looking to avenge a 6-4 loss just this past Saturday at PNC Arena. The Canes won 3-2 in an overtime affair back on Oct. 5, too, so the Capitals should come out with a bit of a chip on their shoulder. Braden Holtby has been on the short end of both of the losses to Carolina, as he is 0-1-1 against the Hurricanes and 17-5-2 against everyone else. It's a far cry from last season when the Capitals swept the four-game meetings in the regulat season. Of course, Carolina got their revenge, winning in double-overtime in Game 7 of their playoff series, and the confidence has spilled over to this season so far.

Wednesday’s 6-pack
Worst teams in country shooting foul shots:
353) SE Louisiana 54.8%
352) Mississippi Valley State 55.2%
351) Saint Louis 55.7%
350) Army 55.9%
349) Maryland-Eastern Shore 58.8%
348) Nebraska 59.0%

Quote of the Day:
“Coach Riley said he wasn’t going anywhere for a while. He was able to assure me and my parents, who asked the same question, as well. … He seemed genuine in his response. He told me he doesn’t want to go anywhere, and he’s planning on staying for a long time. From what his family has told me and what other coaches have told me they say he’s happy in Norman.”
Oklahoma football recruit Jalin Conyers

Wednesday’s quiz
What team did Al Pacino’s character coach in the great football movie, Any Given Sunday?

Tuesday’s quiz
Last team the Buffalo Bills beat in a playoff game was the Miami Dolphins, in 1995.

Monday’s quiz
Butch Davis was the Cleveland Browns’ coach the last time they made the playoffs.

********************************************************

Wednesday’s List of 13: Happy New Year!!!!

13) This season’s bowl records:
AAC: 2-3
ACC: 4-5
Big 14: 3-2
Big X: 0-4
C-USA: 3-4
MAC: 2-3
MW: 3-2
Pac-12: 3-2
SEC: 4-1
Sun Belt: 2-1

12) From Darren Rovell:
Bettor who bet $74,430 on Patriots to beat Dolphins straight up would have won $4,651, but New England lost.

At the same sportsbook, a bettor wagered $744.55 on the Dolphins to win straight up. He won $6,329.

11) Cleveland Browns fired GM John Dorsey Tuesday, fortifying their position as the worst-run franchise in the NFL. They have zero continuity from year to year, are now replacing their coach and GM, and if the new people aren’t big Baker Mayfield fans, they’ll change QB’s again.

Baylor coach Matt Rhule declined an interview with the Browns; smart guy.

10) Next year, the Browns will have their 8th head coach in 12 years; the Steelers have had three head coaches in the last 50 years.

9) 37-year old QB Ryan Fitzpatrick ran the ball for 215 yards this year; that led the Dolphins in running for the season.

Marlon Mack of the Colts ran the ball for 225 yards in one game this season.

8) Chicago Bears fired four assistants, including OC Mark Helfrich, and re-committed to QB Mitch Trubisky for next year.

7) Arizona State 20, Florida State 14— From 2012-16, Seminoles went 59-9; the last three years, they’re 18-20, and will have their third coach in four years next season.

6) I’m still trying to process that Seattle had 21 first downs in the 2nd half Sunday; they’ve had seven games this season where they had less than 21 first downs for the whole game.

5) Solid bit of trivia: Howard Schultz is the guy who used to be the CEO of Starbucks; he grew up in Brooklyn, but went to college at Northern Michigan, where he tried out for the football team, as a QB. But Northern Michigan already had a good QB, a guy named Steve Mariucci, who went on to coach the 49ers and Lions in the NFL.

Starbucks is overpriced, but they do have excellent lemon pound cake.

4) Baylor coach Matt Rhule is one of the ten highest paid coaches in the country? Wow. Word is the Giants are interested in hiring Rhule as their next coach.

3) Detroit Lions fired six assistant coaches, which raises the question: Why did they keep the head coach? What has he done to justify his continued employment?

2) Minnesota Twins signed pitchers Rich Hill ($3M), Homer Bailey ($7M) to one-year deals; Hill isn’t expected to pitch until June after having his arm operated on recently.

1) Happy New Year, everyone. Hope 2020 is a great year for all of us.

Thursday’s 6-pack
Teams who’ve played fastest tempo up to this point:
6) Eastern Washington
5) Central Arkansas
4) Alabama
3) Mississippi Valley State
2) Eastern Kentucky
1) Houston Baptist

Quote of the Day:
“I played football all my life, so I couldn’t just sit out there and watch my team play and my brothers be out there. So I just wanted to go to war with my brothers like I’ve been doing the whole season. I love playing football, so I just wanted to come out here and compete with my brothers.”
Alabama WR Jerry Jeudy

Thursday’s quiz
Which Hall of Fame QB coached the Dallas team in the climactic game in the 1999 movie Any Given Sunday?

Wednesday’s quiz
Al Pacino’s character coached the Miami Sharks in the great football movie, Any Given Sunday.

Tuesday’s quiz
Last team the Buffalo Bills beat in a playoff game was the Miami Dolphins, in 1995.

***********************************************************************************

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud…….

13) Oregon 28, Wisconsin 27:
— Badgers outgained Oregon, 322-204.
— Wisconsin converted 4-5 4th down plays, but turned ball over four times.

12) Alabama 35, Michigan 16— Crimson Tide averaged 13.1 yards/pass attempt with their backup QB playing.

11) Why would any NFL team draft Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa in the first round? He’s been hurt a lot; very doubtful he could withstand the physical demands of a 16 (or 17)-game NFL season. I’m guessing a dislocated hip will be very difficult to recover from, and still be the elite athlete he was before the injury.

2019— Dislocated hip, nasal fracture
2018— Sprained knee

He’s also sprained both ankles in the last year.

10) Minnesota 31, Auburn 24— Gophers’ WR Tyler Johnson may have made the Catch of the Year on January 1, a 2-yard TD that put Minnesota up 31-24 at halftime. Johnson had 12 catches for 204 yards, two TD’s. He will play on Sundays, and play very well.

9) Arizona State 20, Florida State 14— Not often you win a game when your offense doesn’t score a TD; Sun Devils scored the winning TD on a pick-6 with 10:06 left in a game where the two teams combined to convert only 6-33 third down plays.

Florida State outgained ASU 470-282, but turned the ball over six times.

8) There is a sportswriter named Art Spander who has been to 67 consecutive Rose Bowls; now thats impressive. Pretty sure Mr Spander wrote for The Sporting News when I was a kid.

7) Here’s the deal with instant replay reviews:
— Look at the replay from a couple angles.
— Was the call on the field an obvious error?
— If it wasn’t an obvious error, the call stands. None of this 5-7 minute stuff. If you can’t find an error in two minutes, move the game along.

6) Washington Redskins hired Ron Rivera as head coach, Jack Del Rio as defensive coordinator, as they rebuild their organization.

5) Point guard James Akinjo transfers from Georgetown to Arizona; Akinjo averaged 13.4 ppg, 5.1 assists, and 1.3 steals per game in 40 career games (39 starts) at Georgetown, but was criticized for being not a good enough distributor of the ball.

4) There have been ten Big Sky conference basketball games so far; one game was a pick ‘em, and underdogs covered the other nine.

3) ESPN runs ads for The Masters on New Year’s Eve, because there isn’t any golf on TV between now and April.

2) From Tom Crouch: Since 2003, there have been 575 drives over 400 yards on the PGA Tour; 319 of those have been at Kapalua, where the PGA Tour resumes today.

96 of those 319 drives have been on the 18th hole; 29 of those 96 were hit by Dustin Johnson.

1) RIP to former NBA commish David Stern, who passed away Wednesday at age 77.

Stern was an excellent businessman who made the NBA a much more profitable enterprise; he also totally screwed over the city of Seattle when they wouldn’t build a new arena, facilitating the Sonics’ sale, and subsequent move to Oklahoma City.

But that was business, and Stern’s job was to make the NBA more profitable, which he was very, very good at.
