Rodina bounces Bouchard in Ashe debut.
WHAT HAPPENED: World No. 89 Evengiya Rodina edged through a tight first set and rolled in the second set to knock Eugenie Bouchard out of the US Open in the first round on Wednesday, 7-6, 6-1.
"I tried to focus on every single point and stay aggressive," said Rodina on court after the match. "I think my game worked today."
In the first career meeting between the two players, Rodina's clean ball-striking won out on the afternoon, as she struck 16 winners to 18 unforced errors and broke serve a total of five times.
Playing tidy tennis and taking her opportunities, the Russian's dogged defense routinely forced Bouchard into uncomfortable positions on the court, and the Canadian consistently missed the mark off the ground over the course of the 85-minute encounter.
The early stages of the match saw the two players getting to know each other, as Rodina snagged an early break twice, only to have Bouchard bounce back immediately each time, keeping the match on serve after the first eight games.
Though former Wimbledon finalist Bouchard kept up the pressure on her opponent by continuing to hold serve in the ensuing games, an uneven stretch where she made seven unforced errors in eight points saw her 6-5 lead disappear, and Rodina held at love and built a 4-0 lead in the tiebreak. The early cushion later saw the Russian build five set points, and she converted on her second with a cleanly struck forehand winner.
The aggressive consistency from the Russian was paramount in the match, as Rodina won 12 of the 18 rallies that went more than nine shots, including the point of the match in the sixth game of the second set. Serving at 4-1, 15-0 the Russian ran corner to corner, chasing down several groundstrokes and a smash off the Canadian's racquet before sprinting forward to a Bouchard backhand dropshot and finishing the rally with a precise crosscourt forehand.
Using the momentum as a springboard after winning the marathon point, the Russian saw the last six games of the second set, and match, go in her favor after she fell behind a break in the first game of the second set. Rodina's wn sent Bouchard home in the first round of the US Open for the second year in a row.
WHAT IT MEANS: The 28-year-old Russian, one of two mothers in the US Open main draw alongside Germany's Tatjana Maria, reached the round of 64 for the third straight year with the victory, setting up a meeting with No. 4 seed Elina Svitolina.
MATCH POINT: Bouchard has seen her ranking slip to No. 76 this season, and has fallen in the first round of the US Open in each of the past two years after back-to-back second week showings. Can the Canadian re-find the form that made her a Top 5 player?
