Getting to know: Naomi Osaka.[/h]
Naomi Osaka bounced back from the disappointment of losing a 5-1 third-set lead over Madison Keys in the third round of last year's US Open to stun defending champion Angelique Kerber in this year's opening round, 6-3, 6-1, Tuesday inside Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Here's a quick primer on this 19-year-old breakout Japanese star:
While Osaka had previously won seven matches against Top 25 opponents, her win over the No. 6-seeded Kerber was the first Top 10 victory of her career.
- Osaka has fared well in her limited Grand Slam opportunities. Despite playing in just six total Grand Slam main draws coming into the 2017 US Open, she has already reached the third round at all four majors.
- In her first Grand Slam main-draw appearance, as a qualifier at the 2016 Australian Open, Osaka defeated No. 18 seed Elina Svitolina en route to the third round.
- She won her first tour-level match in 2014 at the age of 16, against 2011 US Open champion Samantha Stosur at the US Open Series event in Stanford, Calif.|
- She is one of four teenagers in the world's Top 100, entering the US Open ranked No. 51.
- Osaka's mother is Japanese and her father is Haitian. She was born, coincidentally, in Osaka, Japan, and now lives in Boca Raton, Fla.
