Mannarino advances to third round with four-set win.
WHAT HAPPENED: Adrian Mannarino defeated Bjorn Fratangelo 6-3, 6-7, 6-1, 6-2 on Court 17 on Thursday to advance to the third round, the second straight Slam he's made it that far.
Mannarino is coming off a strong showing at Wimbledon, reaching the fourth round where he lost to Novak Djokovic in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6, 6-4.
On Thursday, Mannarino only needed one service break in taking the first set, but had trouble in the second. He was broken twice and came up empty in the tiebreak to drop the set as Fratangelo leveled the match at one set apiece.
He made quick work in the third, winning the set in 21 minutes, outscoring Fratangelo 25 points to 10. After the set was tied at 1-1, Mannarino won each of the next five games in quick succession.
The 29-year-old Frenchman then cruised in the fourth for the win over the 24-year-old American, who qualified as a wild card.
WHAT IT MEANS: Next up will be the winner of the match between No. 6 Dominic Thiem and Tayor Fritz. Mannarino is 0-5 in his career against Thiem and 2-0 against Fritz.
Fratangelo has been a wild card at the US Open in each of the past three years but hadn't earned a win in the main draw until this year. In eight Grad Slam main draws, he's only made it to the second round one other time (2016 French Open).
MATCH POINT: Mannarino has advanced to the second round without dropping a set. Lurking is a possible fourth-round matchup with 2009 US Open winner Juan Martin del Potro. Can he duplicate his success from Wimbledon and reach the fourth round of a major?
