Women’s Gymnastics: Team final

The most anticipated gymnastics event of the year pits the rest of the world vs. the American women, who have been on a winning streak since they won gold four years ago in London. With three-time world all-around champion Simone Biles, 2012 Olympians Gabby Douglas and Aly Raisman, and new stars Laurie Hernandez and Madison Kocian, the U.S. is heavily favored to repeat as Olympic champions.<strike></strike>

Men’s Rugby: United States vs. Brazil

The U.S. brings a men’s rugby roster to Rio featuring a former track sprinter (Carlin Isles), an NFL safety (Nate Ebner) and a UK expat captain (Madison Hughes). Some may call them ragtag, but that hasn't stopped them from becoming one of the most entertaining teams to watch in rugby this season.<strike></strike>

Women’s Soccer: United States vs. Colombia

The U.S. women close out their preliminary round matches against a Colombia team that’s had more success on the international stage since the 2012 Olympics, but has been unable to find the back of the net in Rio in their first two contests. Look for Alex Morgan and Carli Lloyd to lead the U.S. team on the road to the quarterfinals.<strike></strike>

U.S. women look to beat their best in gymnastics team final.

CpbDWbwUMAAbt44.jpg

When Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas and the rest of the Fierce Five won gold in London, it was decisive: at the end of their golden night, they had outscored silver medalists Russia by over five points.
When Raisman, Douglas and their teammates on the not-yet-nicknamed 2016 team qualified to the team final in Rio, it was by nearly 10 points.

How much better can the U.S. get?

The world will find out on Tuesday, Aug. 9 at 3 p.m. ET when the U.S. compete for a second consecutive Olympic team title.
The other teams in the final probably, if they're being honest, know they're competing for second or third place. Aliya Mustafina, who won silver with the Russian women four years ago, stated it as a fact.
"It's going to be really difficult to compete against the American team," Mustafina told the AP. "They are unbeatable at the moment."

The U.S. women will start on vault, where 16-year-old Laurie Hernandez will try to start the night on a strong note. The line-up is:

Vault: Hernandez, Raisman, Simone Biles
Uneven bars: Biles, Douglas, Madison Kocian
Balance beam: Raisman, Hernandez, Biles
Floor exercise: Hernandez, Raisman, Biles

They'll be in the same rotation as China, the second place qualifier. The eight teams in the final, in qualifying order, are:
1. United States
2. China
3. Russia
4. Great Britain
5. Brazil
6. Germany
7. Japan
8. Netherlands

3.35 points separated second-place China from eighth-place Netherlands, and in the team final scores from qualifications will be wiped clean.
Missing from the team final is Romania, who won bronze in London and earned a team medal at every Olympics since 1976. But they failed to qualify a full team to the Rio Olympics, sending only one gymnast, Catalina Ponor.

Individual
Australia’s Christopher Burton continues his dominant pace towards gold with a flawless cross-country test. The 34-year-old exhibits excellent knowledge of pace and use of his horse on Pierre Michelet’s four-star course where many riders struggled today. Burton sits at the top of the leaderboard with a total of 37.60 penalty points.Michael Jung makes an astonishing climb back to the top of the leaderboard today after a stellar cross-country performance. Jung, Burton, and Astier Nicolas are the only riders to complete Michelet’s course without accumulating penalty points. Jung holds the No. 2 spot with 40.9 penalty points.Unfortunately, Germany’s team imploded in today’s events, so Jung will have to keep up his dominance in hopes for an individual gold.

France’s Astier Nicolas is hungry for a title after losing his top five rated performance on day two of eventing. Astier climbs the leaderboard from the No.11 spot to the No.3 spot after a much needed perfect cross-country test. Austier is determined to take home gold in his debut Olympic appearance. Austier holds the No.3 spot with a total of 42.00 penalty points.
New Zealand’s Mark Todd displays a near perfect cross-country performance, adding 2 penalty points to his score for a time violation. The two-time Olympic gold medalist is looking to add his third at 60 years-old.

The comeback of the day goes to Americans Phillip Dutton and Boyd Martin. Dutton and Martin perform near perfect cross-country tests with minimal time penalties. Dutton jumps from the No. 11 spot to the No.5 spot with a combined penalty score of 46.80. Martin’s star performance takes him from the No.35 spot all the way up the No.6 spot with a combined penalty score of 50.9. Unfortunately, Dutton and Martin will have to compete against each other to earn a title since America can no longer compete as a team.

Team
Australia refuses to accept anything less than a gold title. The team is determined to recover from their unfortunate London appearance. Christopher Burton and Sam Griffiths claim top 10 spots on the leaderboard after exhibiting phenomenal cross-country performances. Australia takes the No. one spot with a combined team score of 150.30 penalty points.

Mark Todd’s and Mark Johnstone’s top 10 performances help carry New Zealand up to the No. 2 spot with a combined score of 154.80 penalty points. The team must have two individual members end the competition in top 10 spots in order to bring home the gold.
The French drop the No.3 spot on the leaderboard after being outperformed by Australia and New Zealand. The team still remains close in the running for gold but must rely on Nicolas and Mathieu Lemoine to exhibit stellar performances in their third phase of eventing. The team has a combined score of 161.00 penalty points.

Germany, the reigning gold champions, fall apart in the cross-country competition. Michelet’s course gave riders a true test that many had difficulty tackling. Sandra Auffarth and Michael Jung held the team high after day two with top 5 performances, but Auffarath falls to the No. 20 spot behind teammate Ingrid Klimke after accumulating jumping and time penalties.

Russia and the United States are no longer teams after the cross- country event. Each team’s two remaining members will continue to compete individually.
Eventing will continue tomorrow, Tuesday Aug.8 at 9:00 am ETS. The morning session will serve as team jumping finals and the individuals who hold the top 25 spots will compete for individual Olympic glory in the second round of jumping.

Danell Leyva on London and Rio: 'It feels equally bad'.

Cpa8fPwUAAEPF5H.jpg

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — It was 2012 all over again for the Americans on Monday in the Rio Games.
Just as in London, they followed a great performance in the preliminaries of the team competition with a terrible start to the finals and finished fifth.
"In a lot of ways, these guys performed better than I feel we did in London," coach Mark Wiliams said. "We fought through everything and there's no giving up. Gymnastics is hard and there are a lot of good teams out there on the men's side."

Four years ago things went wrong when they started on the pommel horse and two of them fell. On Monday it was the floor exercise that put the team in a big hole early with both Alex Naddour and Sam Mikulak stepping out of bounds during their routines.
"It's obviously tough whenever you start from behind, but that's kind of the Team USA motto to never give up, never quit, fight until the end," Chris Brooks said. "So we just tried to rally together and get the ball rolling."
They were able to do that, turning in solid performances on the rings, vault and parallel bars to put them within striking distance of a medal. Only the uneven bars were left and Danell Leyva knew he had to be aggressive to give the team a chance.

But instead of sticking his routine, he missed a connection, leaving the Americans in fifth place once more.
"We started it off a little rough but we were picking it up toward the end," Leyva said. "I was the one who messed it up at the end. I just slipped on the bar. I really tried grabbing on and holding on as much as I could but my grip was off, like it was not on the bar, and that's why it slipped off."
It was a day that illustrated the rapidly increasing gap between the U.S. men's and women's teams. While the women are overwhelming favorites to win their second straight team gold, the men have slipped to the middle of the pack after winning team medals in both 2004 and 2008. Williams watched the American women dominate the field in qualifying on Sunday night and hoped it would give his group a boost.

"Looking at the results obviously they're doing the right things and they looked fantastic last night," Williams said. "That was one of the best gymnastics meets I've ever watched. We've got to come out and be on fire as well."
The gymnasts weren't really interested in comparing what happened in London to Monday's performance. But Leyva summed up the feelings of most of the guys rather succinctly.
"It feels equally bad," he said.

Despite the disappointing finish the men were happy with their effort and looking forward to better results in the individual events.
"Even though we didn't get the placement that we wanted it was fun. We had fun down there," Brooks said. "We were supporting each other. We were competing with everything we had. It's gymnastics — sometimes it doesn't go your way, sometimes you need a little bit of luck. But I had a great time."
Naddour completely agreed with his teammate and had a smile on his face as he described the day.
"Fifth in the world," he said. "It's still pretty good."

Michael Phelps to swim in fifth 200m butterfly Olympic final.

Cpa2wsKVUAAEaTD.jpg

Michael Phelps swam the 200m butterfly as his only event in his Olympic debut at the Sydney Games in 2000. He won gold in the event in 2004 and 2008, but fell short in 2012. Le Clos took gold over Phelps by 0.05 seconds.
In Monday night’s semifinals, Phelps and le Clos did head-to-head battle in the same heat, racing in lanes 3 and 5.
Hungary’s Tamas Kenderesi won the heat in one minute, 53.96 seconds. Phelps clocked 1:54.12 to le Clos’ 1:55.19 seconds. Both move onto Tuesday’s final, which will be Phelps' fifth.

About an hour earlier in the session, le Clos earned a silver medal in the 200m freestyle.
“I’m finishing well," Phelps told media after the race. "I need to probably work on some momentum going in and out of turns. But as a whole I didn’t chop any walls tonight. I thought my underwaters were better than this morning. I feel a lot better than I did this morning.”
Joining the juggernauts is Hungary’s Laszlo Cseh, the 2015 world champion in the event. His 1:54.12 was good enough to advance in third place.
The U.S.’ Tom Shields finished 20th in the preliminary heats and did not advance to the semifinals.
