It's not addressed in the rules but it could act as a hedge in a way which I'd prefer we try to avoid. Instead of limiting losses let's strive to maximize gains.

Note that I asked that before yesterday's games. I think we might need a rule against middling. I could virtually clinch (or at least have a HUGE advantage in) my current match by middling all of my remaining plays, as could anybody who gains a big lead. As it stands now, it would be a chickenshit move, but not illegal. I agree we should "strive to maximize gains" but we are also playing in matches that we want to win and middling can be a tempting strategy if it's legal. I realize we are already many matches in, but something concrete might be helpful in the late rounds. Maybe (in a 15 game match) make middling illegal for the last 6 games....or make it illegal all together....OR....embrace it as a legal move. I don't really care, as long as we all understand (and play by) the same rules. In any case I will not be middling in this match. I am asking this for the remaining matches.
