Glen Coffey the RB from BAMA just announced yesterday that he is going pro, another blow for the Tide.

Yes Florida's schedule is VERY favorable:

HOME:Cha. Southern, Troy, Vols, Arkansas, Vandy, FIU, FSU.
AWAY:Kentucky, LSU (toughest game), Miss. St., So. Carolina
NEUTRAL:Georgia (although UF gets more fans at this game)

If Tebow stays, you will see definitely UF playing for the championship @the Rose Bowl next year, hopefully meeting and knocking off USC. USC deserves to play someone else than a Little 10 team. I'll be there since I'm in SoCal.

Very difficult to repeat (Florida) no matter who returns and who they recruit, but they will make a run for it (until someone knocks them off).

back to rich rodriguez...i remember west virginia losing AT HOME against pittsburgh with a trip to the national title on the line and there high flying offense just jizzed down there leg. 9 points. he is a pretty good coach. Michigan had the talent to win more games and they blew half of them this year.

Two teams that I think are going to have a tough time sustaining a top 10 rating is Penn State and Georgia. They lose a lot of key players.

i like USC and Texas to be #1 come bowl season. Florida right behind them

Ole Miss will have 4 losses

If Ohio St can win their 2 tough games they could be in a BCS bowl

You're pre-judging Rodriguez because of one bad year at Michigan, where he had virtually nothing to work with on offense coming in. Give him a couple years to draft the players he needs for his system and I'll bet their fortunes turn around. He is one of the great young offensive minds in football. Another great offensive mind and a coach that I think will be missed by his old school is Paul Johnson. I'm betting the farther he is removed from Navy the more downhill they'll go.

A different sport but still a good comparison. Michigan B-Ball was horrible in '08 due mostly to a new coach and new system. One year later they are beating Duke, UCLA and competing in the Big 10. More than likely going to the Dance. I agree with GS that Michigan football will be back to a top program in a couple years once Dick-rod gets going.

He did great at WV and that was with 2 and 3 star kids. Imagine what he will do with the talent ends up at Michigan...

penn st real easy schedule...their 2 toughest games (iowa/oh st) both at home...toughest road games are either @ illinois wk 5 or at mich st to end the season...those are tough roadies, but they certainly shouldn't be your TOUGHEST confernce road games...non-conference is cupcake city

they still have arguably the best qb in the conference and both their rbs, as well as sean lee back from injury...blowouts last season gave their backups lots of playing time...probably 10-2 even if their talent level has dipped a bit, they just won't be tested enough (oh st has lost a lot, and while iowa will be good, hard to overlook the importance of shonn greene leaving early)

I get a sneaky feeling that this may be Texas's turn. USC has 4 humongous road games to win and they might not survive with one loss again. (Cal, Oregon, OH St. and ND on the road.) It's hard to say where the rest of the conference will be after a few weeks into the season. Last year's OOC games were a bit too much for too many new starters to handle and the whole conference paid for it.

This year the OOC schedules are no easier but at least the players and teams, (especiallly the top 4 or 5) have a year under their belt with a few exceptions. I think Cal will show up this time but Oregon might get their shit together too. There are no guarantees that USC will survive the gauntlet. Who is their QB now anyway? (just being facetious)

Trent...These are just first impressions. When I see teams lose the bulk of their line and WR's it kind of brings up red flags for me. Until I really see what we have after spring, I basically have the same feeling about OU. Losing their WR's and O-Line doesn't warrant a lot of confidence with me. I know these subs for both Penn State and OU have gotten a lot of playing time because of their blowout games. But they were also second unit players for a reason. After a couple years in the backup role and when finally given a chance, many times these players can come right in and make an impression. Sometimes not. We won't really know until the season starts. Your right, I really hadn't looked at PSU's schedule before making an off the cuff remark. But how well Penn State does will also have everything to do with the overall improvment of their own conference. If Zook could ever pull his head out of his ass, he might be able to field a good team. He certainly has drafted well enough the last couple of years. And I continue to be impressed by Dantonio at MSU. He's made them consistently into a very hard working team that always gives 100% effort. And they should have a very good defense next season. Of course Ohio State always has the personnel to fill in the blanks and reload. So I don't like to say never say never with this team. I also think Michigan will be much more of a threat in Rod's second year. I'm not at all impressed with Wisconsin coach Bielema. I get the feeling the farther removed they get from Alveraz the worst they're going to become. Just my opinion. I have been known to be wrong.

Hey GS,

You seem to know a lot about coaches so I was curious what your opinion was on the new OC for the Illini, Mike Schultz from TCU. I thought Mike Locksley who got hired at New Mexico as a HC had a horrible year as the OC in '08 so I welcomed the change but don't know too much about Schultz.

It's no secret Zook has some trouble in the coaching dept. and I always thought he would look much better if he surrounded himself with a good supporting cast to develope the talent he recruits.

Tootight....I'm curious to see how things play out at Illinois under OC Shultz. Patterson was a pretty demanding coach at TCU. So I'm sure that Shultz was on a pretty short leash being the offensive coordinator of this team. TCU was all about running and defense. If you just went by what happened at TCU, you would think that Illinois is going to go to a more power run oriented attack. Shultz was also the quarterbacks coach at TCU. And I've never been impressed with TCU's QB play. This position has in fact been their downfall in some of their seasons. In fact, I have seen very few years where TCU hasn't had some kind of QB controversy. I don't know if this had more to do with the indecision of Shultz or Patterson. But one given when it comes to TCU is we know they aren't going to win many games by a 42-24 score. They play defense and they run the ball. And every once in a while they find a QB who can throw it. This is usually when they have a hell of a team. Illinois could possibly be going with the same formula. With Juice Williams to work with, Shultz will probably have an easy first season. Personally, I like the power running attack. So in my opinion Illinois could have done much worse hiring somebody else. Shultz looks to me like a nice safe pick..We'll just have to see how much imagination he has now that he's away from Patterson. There's probably a good chance that a personality like Zook will let him have a little more free rein with the offense than Patterson did.. I really expect Illinois to have a good team next season despite the shortcomings of Zook. With the high amount of starters they have returning, along with a veteran QB, I look for them to have more of the kind of season they had in 2006.

It's way too early to have a firm grasp on my top ten. But this is my personal top ten that I would rank based on starters coming back, last year's records, conference strengths, schedules etc.

1.Florida
2.Texas
3.Bama
4.LSU
5.USC
6.OU
7.Virginia Tech
8.Cal
9.Boise St.
10.Penn State

I see where you put Cal GoSooners and I agree with the idea that they start out in the top 10. There are 2 exceptional players on that team who will make a lot of all-America teams... I'm referring to Syd Quan Thompson and Jahvid Best. They both lead very athletic teams on their respective sides of the ball too.

Perhaps the single most critical question about the team is their QB. Tedford is looooong overdue to have himself a future NFL draft pick at QB running his offense. I won't bother to mention the long list of disappointments from Tedford at Cal lately... and that had better change or they won't be there in the end. Kevin Riley is their best hope of breaking out this year but it doesn't seem like he's stepping into any kind of tradition.

In the end, I think thers's a solid chance that Tedford's got himeslf another flop... but they've sure got some excellent players on that team, so anything's possible. As a matter of fact, they are about 3 solid linebackers away from having a full deck, and if I'm not mistaken, Tedford's found a few JC's that might make up for enough to pull it off.

I'd still keep a close eye on Riley... very close because he's still the barometer of their offense 1/2 of the time. As a matter of fact, I can see them winning more than a few "ugly" games like their win over the Terps in the Emerald bowl. Their defense held up fine but that game was a perfect example of how Jahvid Best took on the responsibility of leading their offense when their QB was playing like crap. That's Cal in a nutshell.

I can even see a very strong possibility that USC's first year starter Aaron Corp will have a better season than Kevin Riley. Tedford's reputation for having top drawer QB's under his guidance has taken a wrong turn for a pretty long while now. Since Aaron Rogers left at the enof of the 2004 season, it's been a pretty bleak picture for Cal QB's. It would not surprise me if that turns out to be their Achilles heel this year too. It's too bad because there are some studs on that team.

Conan...I basically like Cal by the process of elimination. Oregon loses half of their team to graduation. They do still get Cal at home next season. So that could be the decider between the two. Oregon State loses quite a few starters on defense, and most of their offensive line.. But their offense could still be better than last season.. I rank them about even with Cal just based on Riley being in my opinion the superior coach.. But they also have to travel to Cal. And so does Arizona. So slight advantage Cal. And with Riley not having a QB battle with Longshore anymore, I expect Tedford to put him there and keep him there next season. I look for a better overall performance in his junior year without all of the distractions. Keep in mind that my rankings are based on the beginning of the season. Cal's success will depend on if they can beat ASU or Oregon or both on the road. I don't trust Cal very much, and never have. But they do have the athletes and speed on offense to make a run. They managed a 9-4 record this year with just 12 returning starters. They should have more returning starters back next season than any other team in the Pac-10 except UCLA. And if they could somehow find a way to beat USC, they'll be in the driver's seat. I know that's a BIG if.

GoSooners, Oregon is LOADED on offense, regardless of who's not there anymore. They have hardly showcased the abilities of Chris Harper as a receiver and the way Masoli was running the spread option, they have 1/2 their problems solved just with him in the game. Add to that LeGarrette Blount and that puts them very close to having another offensive juggernaut.

I know of some JC's that should have immediate impact and Ducks tells me of this new kid (he's in the other thread [Pac-10 notes] at the bottom of P1 if you missed it) LaMichael James, who tore up the scout team last year... another Quizz Rogers. So they look to have the makings of another overwhelmng rushing attack. I've come to expect nothing less of Chip Kelly.

UoDucks seems pretty high on them (Masoli & Co.) taking it to Boise St. in W1 next year. I agree with him about that game. Paybacks are a bitch. The Ducks seem to respond to that kind of motivation. Boise's win at Autzen last year sets this one up.

If they can build on a win vs Boise on the smurf turf in W1, they will be among the contenders in the conference and could end up ranked in the top 10 in the end. They have been pummeled with injuries in recent years and so "it all depends" once again.

Conan...I agree that the Boise/Oregon will be a huge factor in jumpstarting either team's seasons. As for the Ducks, correct me if I'm wrong, but I have them as losing almost their entire offensive line and a little over half of their defense. You and Ducks know much more than me about Oregon's situation. I know that it's not like they are getting killed by graduation. And they did finish with a 10-3 record this season despite returning only 12 starters. So it will be far from a rebuilding campaign next year. Like I said, Cal and Oregon should be almost interchangeable with the game at Oregon possibly being the conference decider in who challenges USC for the crown... I know one thing, I don't see USC beating both Cal, Oregon and ASU on the road next season. I have a feeling the Pac-10 is going to be a pretty tight race. Because of the overall heavy graduations of the Pac last season, I really didn't expect that much out of them this year. But after that slow start, many of the teams seemed to mature and play much better towards the end of the year. As they showed in their bowl games. So for the most part I expect it to continue next year. I'll definitely be looking for a better start for most of the teams in 2009. There should be a few good early play on games for us. Next season I'm moving away from going exclusively Big 12, and I'm going nationwide on my plays. So I'll be looking for every tidbit of info I can get from you guys.
