You're pre-judging Rodriguez because of one bad year at Michigan, where he had virtually nothing to work with on offense coming in. Give him a couple years to draft the players he needs for his system and I'll bet their fortunes turn around. He is one of the great young offensive minds in football. Another great offensive mind and a coach that I think will be missed by his old school is Paul Johnson. I'm betting the farther he is removed from Navy the more downhill they'll go.
Two teams that I think are going to have a tough time sustaining a top 10 rating is Penn State and Georgia. They lose a lot of key players.
i like USC and Texas to be #1 come bowl season. Florida right behind them
Ole Miss will have 4 losses
If Ohio St can win their 2 tough games they could be in a BCS bowl
Trent...These are just first impressions. When I see teams lose the bulk of their line and WR's it kind of brings up red flags for me. Until I really see what we have after spring, I basically have the same feeling about OU. Losing their WR's and O-Line doesn't warrant a lot of confidence with me. I know these subs for both Penn State and OU have gotten a lot of playing time because of their blowout games. But they were also second unit players for a reason. After a couple years in the backup role and when finally given a chance, many times these players can come right in and make an impression. Sometimes not. We won't really know until the season starts. Your right, I really hadn't looked at PSU's schedule before making an off the cuff remark. But how well Penn State does will also have everything to do with the overall improvment of their own conference. If Zook could ever pull his head out of his ass, he might be able to field a good team. He certainly has drafted well enough the last couple of years. And I continue to be impressed by Dantonio at MSU. He's made them consistently into a very hard working team that always gives 100% effort. And they should have a very good defense next season. Of course Ohio State always has the personnel to fill in the blanks and reload. So I don't like to say never say never with this team. I also think Michigan will be much more of a threat in Rod's second year. I'm not at all impressed with Wisconsin coach Bielema. I get the feeling the farther removed they get from Alveraz the worst they're going to become. Just my opinion. I have been known to be wrong.penn st real easy schedule...their 2 toughest games (iowa/oh st) both at home...toughest road games are either @ illinois wk 5 or at mich st to end the season...those are tough roadies, but they certainly shouldn't be your TOUGHEST confernce road games...non-conference is cupcake city
they still have arguably the best qb in the conference and both their rbs, as well as sean lee back from injury...blowouts last season gave their backups lots of playing time...probably 10-2 even if their talent level has dipped a bit, they just won't be tested enough (oh st has lost a lot, and while iowa will be good, hard to overlook the importance of shonn greene leaving early)
Tootight....I'm curious to see how things play out at Illinois under OC Shultz. Patterson was a pretty demanding coach at TCU. So I'm sure that Shultz was on a pretty short leash being the offensive coordinator of this team. TCU was all about running and defense. If you just went by what happened at TCU, you would think that Illinois is going to go to a more power run oriented attack. Shultz was also the quarterbacks coach at TCU. And I've never been impressed with TCU's QB play. This position has in fact been their downfall in some of their seasons. In fact, I have seen very few years where TCU hasn't had some kind of QB controversy. I don't know if this had more to do with the indecision of Shultz or Patterson. But one given when it comes to TCU is we know they aren't going to win many games by a 42-24 score. They play defense and they run the ball. And every once in a while they find a QB who can throw it. This is usually when they have a hell of a team. Illinois could possibly be going with the same formula. With Juice Williams to work with, Shultz will probably have an easy first season. Personally, I like the power running attack. So in my opinion Illinois could have done much worse hiring somebody else. Shultz looks to me like a nice safe pick..We'll just have to see how much imagination he has now that he's away from Patterson. There's probably a good chance that a personality like Zook will let him have a little more free rein with the offense than Patterson did.. I really expect Illinois to have a good team next season despite the shortcomings of Zook. With the high amount of starters they have returning, along with a veteran QB, I look for them to have more of the kind of season they had in 2006.Hey GS,
You seem to know a lot about coaches so I was curious what your opinion was on the new OC for the Illini, Mike Schultz from TCU. I thought Mike Locksley who got hired at New Mexico as a HC had a horrible year as the OC in '08 so I welcomed the change but don't know too much about Schultz.
It's no secret Zook has some trouble in the coaching dept. and I always thought he would look much better if he surrounded himself with a good supporting cast to develope the talent he recruits.
It's way too early to have a firm grasp on my top ten. But this is my personal top ten that I would rank based on starters coming back, last year's records, conference strengths, schedules etc.
1.Florida
2.Texas
3.Bama
4.LSU
5.USC
6.OU
7.Virginia Tech
8.Cal
9.Boise St.
10.Penn State
Conan...I basically like Cal by the process of elimination. Oregon loses half of their team to graduation. They do still get Cal at home next season. So that could be the decider between the two. Oregon State loses quite a few starters on defense, and most of their offensive line.. But their offense could still be better than last season.. I rank them about even with Cal just based on Riley being in my opinion the superior coach.. But they also have to travel to Cal. And so does Arizona. So slight advantage Cal. And with Riley not having a QB battle with Longshore anymore, I expect Tedford to put him there and keep him there next season. I look for a better overall performance in his junior year without all of the distractions. Keep in mind that my rankings are based on the beginning of the season. Cal's success will depend on if they can beat ASU or Oregon or both on the road. I don't trust Cal very much, and never have. But they do have the athletes and speed on offense to make a run. They managed a 9-4 record this year with just 12 returning starters. They should have more returning starters back next season than any other team in the Pac-10 except UCLA. And if they could somehow find a way to beat USC, they'll be in the driver's seat. I know that's a BIG if.
