totally agree with all who mentioned Ayn Rand. My favorite of hers has to be "Fountainhead"

Also suprised to see a Hank Bukowski fan here at the Rx...:smoker2:

also am a big fan of Kinky Friedman and Elmore Leonard with a dash of Carl Hiaasen tossed in for fun...

Oh, you want some serious fiction writers that I like?

Hemmingway
Faulkner
Roth
Conrad..."heart of darkness" is a must read
Bellow
Mailer.....loved "executioners song"

I'm sure I'll think of a few more tomarrow...

"The Emperor's New Mind" by Roger Penrose.

The title is a take-off on "The Emperor's New Clothes". This book is about Artificial Intelligence and quantum mechanics. The thing that really made this a good book is that it shows that human choices can change the universe. Also, Penrose mentions that if you take a photon from one piece of matter and a photon from another piece of matter, they wouldn't be identical, they would be the same photon. This makes me think there is only one photon in the universe but that it exists in multiple places at the same time which would go against principles of physics. Quantum mechanics is made to seem to be quite different from Newton's laws of physics and leads me to believe more in the metaphysical.

Good thread. How about Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintainance? One of my personal favorites.

I am big into philosophy (if you hadn't noticed from my avator) and anybody that wants to learn a little about philosophy/humantieis should check out the Classics of Western Thought series. There are 3 volumes - I personally recommend Volue III The Modern World. Each volume is just small snippets of works that make for easy reading. You can then pick and choose which ones interest you and then find/read the entire piece if you wish. These books were my first taste of philosophy and literally changed my life.
