Monday Night Football Betting Preview: Jets at Colts

New York Jets at Indianapolis Colts (-7, 46.5)

Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts are hoping their second matchup with an AFC East foe goes better than the first. Playing at home should provide an added lift for the Colts, who will try to rebound from a season-opening drubbing in Buffalo when they host the New York Jets on Monday night.

Touted as one of the favorites to reach the Super Bowl, Indianapolis fell behind by 17 points at halftime and never recovered in a 27-14 loss to the Bills. "They beat us pretty bad," Luck said. "You don't let one game necessarily define you, but that doesn't make it any easier of a pill to swallow." The Jets turned in an impressive performance in Todd Bowles' debut as a head coach, pulling away in the second half for a decisive 31-10 victory over the Cleveland Browns. New York has won the past two meetings, including a 35-9 romp in October 2012 in Luck's fifth career game.

TV:
8:30 p.m. ET, ESPN. LINE: Colts -7. O/U: 46.5

LINE HISTORY:
The Colts opened favored by a converted touchdown and have remained there all week. The total has been bet down slightly from 47.0 to 46.5.

INJURY REPORT:

Jets - WR D. Smith (probable Monday, ribs), CB A. Cromartie (questionable Monday, knee), RB C. Ivory (questionable Monday, groin), LB L. Mauldin (doubtful Monday, concussion).

Colts - LB J. Newsome (probable Monday, hamstring), LB D. Jackson (probable Monday, toe), WR T. Hilton (questionable Monday, knee), LB R. Mathis (questionable Monday, Achilles), CB D. Smith (questionable Monday, undisclosed), CB G. Toler (doubtful Monday, neck), CB D. Bulter (out Monday, hip).

COVERS POWER RANKINGS: Jets (+1.5) - Colts (-2) + home field (-3) = Colts -3.5

ABOUT THE JETS (1-0, 1-0 ATS, 1-0 O/U): New York amassed 154 yards on the ground against Cleveland but there are injury concerns over Chris Ivory (groin), who was limited in practice for a second straight day Friday after rushing for 91 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries in Week 1. Ryan Fitzpatrick, elevated to starter when Geno Smith had his jaw broken in the preseason, threw for 179 yards with two touchdowns and one interception while Brandon Marshall had six catchesor 62 yards and a score in his Jets debut. New York's defense forced five fumbles and had three sacks but figures to receive a much more stern test from Luck than Johnny Manziel.

ABOUT THE COLTS (0-1, 0-1 ATS, 0-1 O/U): Luck and Indianapolis' offense did next to nothing for nearly three quarters a week ago and could be without top wideout T.Y. Hilton, who has not practiced this week after suffering a bruised knee that was thought to be much more severe. A pair of veteran newcomers both had quiet debuts with the Colts - Andre Johnson had four catches for 24 yards and running back Frank Gore was limited to 31 yards on 10 carries as Indy managed only 64 yards rushing. The Colts have issues on the other side of the ball with starting cornerback Greg Toler to miss a second straight week while his backup, Darius Butler (hip), did not practice Friday.

TRENDS:

*
Over is 5-1 in the last six meetings.
* Jets are 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
* Over is 4-1 in the last five meetings in Indianapolis.
* Home team is 5-2 ATS in the last seven meetings.

COVERS CONSENSUS: The public is fairly split in this matchup, with 56 percent of wagers backing the Colts at -7.

Saints' Brees bruised, not ruled out for Week 3

METAIRIE, La. -- New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees received a supporting second opinion on his bruised right shoulder and could play Sunday against the Carolina Panthers. Brees has a rotator cuff contusion, the result of a hard hit to his throwing shoulder early in the second quarter in the Saints' Week 2 loss to the Buccaneers. Response to therapy this week will determined whether Brees can play against the Panthers.

Brees avoided major injury but admitted a direct hit he took on the shoulder from the Bucs' Jacquies Smith just as he started his throwing motion affected him on a few passes later in the game. After the hit, Brees shook his arm and rotated his shoulder while waiting for the next play call to come in.
Head coach Sean Payton also acknowledged Monday that Brees was affected by the hit, but said it was too early to tell if the 15-year veteran would miss any playing time. In nine-plus seasons with the Saints, Brees, who turns 37 in January, has never missed a snap because of injury.

"Today's the day after. ... You take a peek and see how he's feeling, coming along, and see where we're at Wednesday," Payton said. "Certainly, we'll do the best thing for him and for where he's at. But I think it's early to say. "I'm not worried about Drew, but certainly, when he takes a shot like he took yesterday, and I didn't see it until watching the film today, you want to make sure he's healthy and he's upright. He's been throwing it outstanding, but he takes that shot, and obviously, that can affect you once you get hit like that."

In an interview with the team's flagship radio station following the game, Brees said he was fine and later said he never considered leaving the game. He also admitted that he had trouble with the shoulder at the end of last season, but in typical Brees fashion tried to downplay Sunday's injury."Everybody's dealing with something, so you bounce back," he said he was hurt when he tried to recover a fumble and a defensive player landed on top of him, which resulted in a torn labrum and a partial tear of the rotator cuff. Two months later, Brees signed with the Saints.

Brees didn't have ice on his shoulder for a postgame interview Sunday and showed no outward signs of injury when he walked through the locker room during the time it was open to media Monday. He politely declined a request for an interview, which was not a surprise since Wednesday is the day he meets with reporters. Saints' officials had no comment on the NFL Network report and won't have to file an injury report until Wednesday when the team returns to the practice field to begin preparing for Sunday's road game with the Panthers. If Brees is sidelined, journeyman Luke McCown would step in as the starter. McCown has started just nine games in his 12-year career for five teams and has thrown for 2,035 yards with nine touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

NFL Line Watch: Brees' shoulder has total bettors on alert

Spread to bet on now: Atlanta Falcons at Dallas Cowboys (+1)

Are the Falcons finally over the hump? Atlanta owns two tight wins over NFC East opponents (Eagles and Giants), and goes for the division trifecta against the wounded Cowboys Sunday. The Falcons have twice trailed in the late going, only to storm back both times and keep pace with the Panthers in the suddenly-relevant NFC South.

Tony Romo’s injury has caused Dallas money to dry up as bettors have pounded the Falcons 2-to-1. If you like Atlanta to make it three in a row, best lay the money down as soon as possible because the line could bump up pretty quickly.

Spread to wait on: Pittsburgh Steelers at St. Louis Rams (+1)

Steelers action has already tilted this one from Rams -1 to Rams +1, and with 70 percent of early bettors backing Pittsburgh, there could be even more volatility on this game. Pittsburgh’s 25-point blowout of the 49ers in Week 2 settled nerves in western Pennsylvania after the Steelers had been manhandled by the Patriots in the opener.

Rams fans may be in for a roller-coaster ride this season, if the early results are any indication. No one expected St. Louis to be dominated in Washington, but St. Louis just could not get its offense going.

Total to watch: New Orleans Saints at Carolina Panthers (45)

As Yogi would say, it gets late early around here, and at 0-2 the Saints find themselves in last place in the NFC South and with an injured quarterback. Reports about Drew Brees’s injured (throwing) shoulder are conflicting, and range from “he’s good to go on Sunday” to “he’ll be sidelined for several weeks”.

If Brees can’t go against the Panthers, the immortal Luke McCown takes over against a Carolina team that has allowed the second-fewest points in the league this season. Not hard to do the math from that point, especially considering that the Panthers’ offense is banged up itself and has been less than mediocre so far.

Bol this week xs, looking forward to hear your thoughts. But damn Indy still lingering in my head, I had them picked as one of my plays since days before Monday prime game. I should've a better read - the line movement went down from -7 to -6 couple hours before game start when the public was 70-75% on them. I was too damn stubborn =(, lesson learned, moving on......

Happens to everyone, guys. Plus, Joe Public gets a bone thrown his way every now and then, too. I personally take line movement and public perception into account more than any other factor. At the end of the day when it looks like a rat and smells like a rat... XS, you're one of the best, bud - shake it off!

Good luck this week, gentlemen. Look forward to seeing who you're on!

Thursday Night Football betting preview: Redskins at Giants

Washington Redskins at New York Giants (-3.5, 44)

The New York Giants are trying to avoid an 0-3 start - and second loss to an NFC East rival - when they host the Washington Redskins on Thursday night. The Giants have blown double-digit leads in the fourth quarter of each of their first two games but they have recent history on their side against the Redskins, winning the past four matchups.

Washington rebounded from a season-opening defeat to Miami with a 24-10 victory over the St. Louis Rams on Sunday behind a running attack that produced 182 yards. "I think that they have gone ahead and decided to do exactly what they like to do there - run the football,” New York coach Tom Coughlin said of the Redskins. It will be a matchup of strength versus strength - the Redskins are averaging a league-high 171.5 yards rushing while the Giants ranked third against the run with 68.0 yards surrendered. The teams met on a Thursday night almost exactly a year ago in Washington and the Giants breezed to a 45-14 victory.

LINE HISTORY: Books opened the Giants as 4-point home favorites but that has been moved to -3.5. The total has held at 44.

WEATHER: Temperatures expected to be in the low-70s under partly cloudy skies. Wind will blow across the field around four miles per hour.

INJURY REPORT:

Redskins
-
T Tom Compton (Questionable, calf), CB Justin Rogers (Questionable, foot), LB Perry Riley (Questionable, calf), WR DeSean Jackson (Mid October, hamstring).

Giants - DE Owamagbe Odighizuwa (Questionable, foot), TE Daniel Fells (Questionable, foot), DT Markus Kuhn (Questionable, knee), CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (Questionable, head), T Ereck Flowers (Questionable, ankle), LB Jon Beason (Questionable, knee), WR Victor Cruz (Out indefinitely, calf), DE Jason Pierre-Paul (Out indefinitely, finger).

COVERS POWER RANKINGS:
Redskins (+3.5) - Giants (+2.5) + home field (-3.0) = Giants -4

WHAT CAPPERS SAY:
"The Redskins the early results from the Redskins defensive makeover have been impressive, with former Chargers LB coach Joe Barry paying immediate dividends as defensive coordinator. The New York media are primed to eat this team alive after the G-men blew double digit leads in the fourth quarter of each of their two losses to open the season."

ABOUT THE REDSKINS (1-1 SU, 1-1 ATS, 0-2 O/U): After Alfred Morris rushed for 121 yards in the opener, rookie Matt Jones erupted for 123 yards and a pair of touchdowns last week to make life easy for quarterback Kirk Cousins, who finished 23-of-27 for 203 yards and a score. Cousins, who will be without top wideout DeSean Jackson (hamstring), had a nightmarish performance against the Giants last September, throwing four interceptions and losing a fumble. Tight end Jordan Reed has 13 receptions and a score through two games while Washington's defense ranks No. 1 overall, allowing an average of 234.5 yards per game, and fourth against the run (70.5 yards).

ABOUT THE GIANTS (0-2 SU, 1-1 ATS, 1-1 O/U): Coughlin on Monday admitted to being "frustrated" with the erratic play of quarterback Eli Manning, who has performed poorly and made some head-scratching decisions in the fourth quarter of both losses. Manning finally did connect with wideout Odell Beckham Jr., who had seven catches for 146 yards and a TD last week, but New York's running game has been inconsistent and could be without starting left tackle Ereck Flowers, who hurt his ankle Sunday. Conversely, the Giants could receive a big boost on defense as starting middle linebacker Jon Beason (knee) is expected to make his season debut.

TRENDS:

* Under is 6-1 in the last seven meetings.
* Redskins are 0-4 ATS in their last four meetings.
* Redskins are 0-4 ATS in their last four games following a ATS win.
* Over is 4-1 in Giants last five vs. NFC East.

COVERS CONSENSUS: Sixty-two percent of Covers users are backing the Giants.
