one really good thing that might happen as a result of this war....the complete fade-out of france as an international influence....

a country of about 60 million people with a gross national product growth of about 1% per year..and now maybe aced out of their sweetheart business and oil deals with iraq..and a potential u.s. boycott for good measure...saddam,france doesn`t have the juice to keep the u.s. and britain off your ass........even russia and china can`t help you now.....

france doesn`t carry enough weight to deserve to be a permanent member on the u.n. security council.....

why not india?......the 6th largest economy in the world as of 1996 and growing exponentially every year......over 1 BILLION people.....the largest democracy in the world.....and now,a nuclear power.......

i think the french stance is to try to salvage some international influence(which is eroding everywhere except the toothless u.n.)....and if evidence is found in iraq implicating france in illegal weapons deals with iraq(as some suspect),they will be humiliated after their stance at the u.n.....i think france may be in serious danger of becoming totally irrelevant....

Grantt,

God damn that poster is scary. Please tell me it's a joke not something the government actually put out.

as far as anti-american sentiment.....that`s old news....it has much to do with our prosperity and success.....envy usually yields resentment....as far as the muslim world is concerned,i`d say the cat was let out of the bag on 9/11.....with the cheering in the streets in many muslim countries.....nothing short of extracting our support of israel will change the u.s.`s perception in arab/muslim countries, although the leadership of many muslim countries are considered friendly.....egypt,jordan,pakistan,india,turkey just to name a few.....but,it`s very hard to be liked by the people of countries in which their children are taught in school at 5 years old on up to hate and kill americans and all so-called zionists......that kind of brain-washing and indoctrination is hard to undo....

sphincter,

Actually as an American living abroad, it has more to do with the perception that we are arrogant, rude, have a superiorty complex, and that our government bullies others around the world.

kaya....some of what you say is probably true....but,we are the most economically and military powerful country in the world....as i said before, because we are in that position, should we yield to the economic and political will of the france`s,germany`s,cameroon`s and angola`s....make no mistake, france`s determination to keep saddam in power is deeply rooted in economic and political self interest(oil and business deals,a large muslim population)....and please remember,in the 1930`s when winston churchill warned of "the gathering storm" of the german threat,he was alone and totally blown off by most of europe(specifically the french, who seem to have a habit of sticking their heads in the sand).....thus leading to the death of millions of people.....

also as i indicated in my other thread,as long as saddam is in power, israel is in great danger...i am not jewish, nor am i some fanatical israeli lover....but,saddam would not hesitate to wipe them off the face of the earth(as he has already indicated in 1991)if he had the means..and there is now nuclear processing material and possibly already assembled nuclear weapons available on the black market....leading to a nuclear holocaust in the middle east and a global disaster(in which a large portion of the world`s oil supply would be pit in jeopardy).....

i don`t like occupying another country...i think we may be opening an enormous can of worms...but i see the logic...even though there are many other american hating middle east countries with tyrannical rulers, this one in particular has proven willing to attack other countries, pay terrorist suicide bomber`s families, murder his own people, set fire to oil fields causing ecological disaster and thumb his nose at the u.n.....

if acting(in what we believe)is in our best interests, leads to resentment in other parts of the world,do we capitulate to the france`s,russia`s and china`s who are pursuing their own best interests?.....

i understand your points...i wish i believed these other countries were acting out of humanitarian concerns...i just don`t believe it...

I actually pretty tired of arguing about this war.
I was just pointing out that the way we are percieved and the things we have done to other countries has much more to do with anti-American sentiment than jealousy.

In my opinion the world is in much greater danger of nuclear or chemical attacks now that the war has started.

How many innocent children have Saddam killed in the past 20 yrs? Please dont change this subject, just try and answer.

Not as many as the US/UN sanctions. I refuse to believe that Saddam visits hospitals to throw newborns out of windows...

Not necessarily radio, you obviously don't know me, my family or my friends.
You usually put up pretty bright posts, I'm surprised to see you generalizing and making a racist comment.

one thing kaya, Americans are not a race. I would say this is an nationalist distinction.

i apologize. but many that visit here in CR are these things. it sometimes saddens me to see such poor representatives.
And sadly (again) that is all that most see.

Radiofree

Who would benefit if we left Saddam in power???
You mean if the United States lifted santions against Iraq their people would prosper or would it go back to the way it was before the U.S. left for the first gulf war. You remember Saddam starting war with Iran just one year after consolidating his power. And as soon as that ended he invaded Kuwait. Their people have not prospered one day since he led his bloody coup to gain power. Culminating with the execution of 21 Baath party members he percieved as a threat to his control of power. This war would not be a war at the expense of the Iraqi people but to their benefit.

Enlighten us, radio. Stop your bitching long enough to fill us in on the perfect current society you ache for us dumb Americans to emulate. Like I really give a shit, but please, do.
