Philippines vs. Korea
FIBA Asia (basketball)
Rotation #2153/2154
3:30am eastern (approx.)

over 145

This is the third place game going early Sunday in China in the FIBA Asia tournament. China and Jordan meet in the final to see who represents Asia in the Olympics. Here is why I like the over in this game.

Both teams just lost low scoring games in the semifinals but in the Q-finals they played high scoring games. Korea won 86-67 (153 points) while The Philippines won 95-78 (173 points). These two played a 78-70 (148) game in this summer's Jones Cup.

The final tends to be low scoring but the third place game has less pressure and tends to have plenty of points. The last three third place games reached 146, 156 and 166 points. The third place game in Asia's Jones Cup totaled 154 as The Philippines beat Chinese Taipei by 82-72.

The Pinoy are led by center Marcus Douthit who leads the tourney with a 21.3 ppg average while Korea gets points from Yang, Park, Kim, Cho and Moon. Moon is formerly known as Jarod Stevenson who played at the Univ. of Richmond. Korea did score 89, 80 and 84 in the first round games as well as 106 and 86 in others before a weak 43 point effort vs. the home team.

There should be a nice opportunity for enough points to get over the total. Hopefully, Douthit will score inside and the two teams will make 3's.

Canada vs. Jamaica
rot# 5605/5606
8pm eastern
FIBA Americas (women)
pick: Jamaica +23.5

Jamaica lost yesterday to Paraguay 71-69 as Jamaica allowed 13 3-pointers in a big upset. I expect the loss to motivate Jamaica to bounce back and play well. Earlier they stayed within 23 of Brazil, the favorite to win the title. Jamaica has only made four 3-pointers in three games but they do have an inside presence with 6'3" Vanessa Gidden and 6'5" Simone Edwards. Nicole Louden has made all four of the deep balls but they should be able to rebound with the Canadians and keep it within 20.

Canada finished in third back in FIBA America 2009 and are a good defensive team that shoots FT's well. This is the fourth and final game of the first round for each. Canada should be happy to win and go to 3-1. I think they win by 15-20 points and Jamaica covers the +23.5.

Brazil vs. Cuba
Women's FIBA America
over 129.5

These two meet in the second semifinal. They met in the last two FIBA America tourneys and the games ended with 138 and 136 points scored. The last 6 meetings have seen 138, 139, 136, 154, 171 and 171 points. Brazil is led by Atlanta Dream's De Souza and Dantas.

Brazil did play a very low scoring game with Canada (95 points) while most of Cuba's game have been low scoring except for a 75-65 (140) game.

I like our chances to get in the 130's.

Maccabi Tel Aviv vs. Cibona Zagreb
#5201/5202 (Adriatic League)
3pm eastern Thursday

over 161.5

Maccabi is a good team that opens the season today at home and should put up plenty of points. They just won on the road 101-72 and are led by Jeremy Pargo, Jordan Farmar, Jon Scheyer and Shawn Jones.

Their opponent gets points from former MSU player Goran Suton as well as Brian Chase and Antwan Barbour.

Maccabi is coached by David Blatt, who is known for defense (played at Princeton under Pete Carrill). They like to press and that should speed the pace of this game.

Hopefully, we see a high scoring home opener and see the road team make some 3's.

Slow first half but lots of points in the second half as it ends 97-81 (178 points).

Former Maryland player Nik Caner-Medly moved from Estudiantes to Valencia. Estudiantes has a new point guard and it may take some time to gel. Take Valencia -3 on Sunday.

Hemofarm vs. Zagreb
#951/952
Tuesday 10/11/2011
Adriatic League

Zagreb -1.5

Both teams lost on round one. Hemofarm cut their budget 50% and added an all new starting lineup. PG Nesovis has only been with the team a few days. They have mostly new guys and young 18/19 year olds. They lost 104-89 to Zvezda due to bad defense and short bench.

Zagreb played poorly in their first game but their opponent played well. I expect the road team to bounce back with veterans like former UNC player Sean May and Gonzaga's Josh Heyvelt.

Hemofarm is the home team but they have very few fans.

I think we see a nice win by Zagreb on Tuesday. GL!

Gravelines/Lyon

over 153.5
This game starts at 1:30pm eastern daylight/12:30pm standard as many books use the regular time. I think we have a good shot at the over on Friday afternoon. Tony Parker owns 20% of Lyon and plays most games. Lyon also has Phil Goss (19 ppg) and former Wake Forest/VCU player Jamie Skeen (who doesn't play much) and former UConn starter Hilton Armstrong. Graveline put up 91 points in one game and they have usually played higher scoring games on the road. Lyon played a 93-83 Euroleague game earlier this season. Hopefully, we see plenty of points today.

Joventut has played some slow paced teams lately. 11 of the last 12 meetings have played over 151 points. I think we get to 160 for an over.

Canada vs. Argentina
Pan Am Games (women)
6:30pm eastern (EDT)
Monday 10/24/2011
Canada +10.5 (bet365)

I like Canada to stay within 10 points of Argentina. These two are playing for 5th place in the women's Pan Am Games in Mexico. Canada lost by 25 to Brazil in the opener, lost to Colombia by 59-57 and beat Jamaica badly. The game yesterday vs. Jamaica should give Canada some confidence.

Argentina did beat the USA in their opener by 58-55 but they were outrebounded by 46-23. They do most of their points from Melissa Gretter, Reggiado and Flores. They only shoot 64% from the line. All of their games have been close:

beat USA 58-55
lost to Mexico 58-57
lost to Puerto Rico 73-70

The over/under in this game is 122.5 so they are expecting a low scoring game. I think we see a close game in the 59-56 range. Take the points with Canada.

Oh, Canada +10.5
