Teachers assess students’ work while considering their diverse background needs to promote fairness in the classroom. "Maybe there are some home life hard ships that make it difficult to complete assignments on time or even maybe there are some errors,” says Kimberlee Armstrong with PPS. PPS says in the past, teachers have given zeros if schoolwork was late or inaccurate, but the new system would change that. Teachers must avoid giving zeros — or any grade lower than 50% — on assignments not meeting expectations, incomplete or handed in late or not at all. Homework can’t be graded and teachers can’t penalize the scores of students who’ve cheated.
PPS argues the traditional grading system is “rooted in bigotry” and points to test scores as proof. While 67% of white students are proficient in English across grades 3 through 11 just 17% of Black students test out as proficient. In math exams 56% of white students show proficiency rates versus just 8% for Black students.
