So true. No sport has a much of a difference between Hi-def and non.

Reno, I disagree with on the high def making the game better. The problem is when the puck goes in the corners, always have to change camera shot/angle. Live (like football) you see the play developing. Also, one things that fans miss on TV is that they don't see actually how wide the rink is and how much spacing is there between the players. On PP it looks like 11 guys in 20 feet of space.

need the fox sports glowing puck!! Remember that gem? Lol

I give the nod to Hasek over Roy. Its splitting hairs to me as both were the best of the best but what Hasek did in Nagano was probably the great goaltending display I ever saw. If he wasnt playing for a shitty buffalo team, gotten unlucky with an injury during turin he may well have had another 2-3 cups. Even Gretz called him the games best player during Haseks prime, guy was near lights out.... I didnt get to see the old time players beyond highlights so I cant speak on the plantes halls sawchuks but Roy Hasek were just superior athletes to those guys and played against superior athletes so I give them a slight nod over these greats. Fuhr was a stud, people discount him for the high goals against and playing behind the stars he did but none of those guys played defense, theyd get endless grade A opportunities on offense and give up just as many coming back the other way, many nights Fuhr kept them in games and they dont win as many championships without him in net despite the talent up front.

I'm fairly young (33), been watching hockey since I was in high school. I remember Roy, Hasek, and Brodeur.

Who am I missing? Some of you vets tell me about some of the great old-timers.

Does anyone nowadays have any shot at getting up in the upper rungs? I think Tim Thomas is the only multiple Vezina winner recently that I didn't mention.

I think Crawford has a shot to be really really good but I'm a homer.

nope

for me its Hasek.

original six
Durnan
Plante
Sawchuk

expansion
Esposito
Parent
Dryden

Modern/current era
Roy
Hasek
Brodeur

Impossible to compare era's, different rules, equipment etc etc. I think Roy the best! Three conn smythe, won two cups on terrible teams, destroyed Brodeur in his prime in the 2001 finals! Jersey badly outshot and out played the Avs! Without Roy Jersey wins 3 cups in four years! Roy allowed one fewer goal than Hasek in the 1998 olympics despite playing in a much tougher group, with the defending world champion USA (the greatest non Canadian hockey team ever!!) The Czech team outshot team Canada 29-25. Only difference Reichel hits inside of the post in shootout and goes in, Lindros hits outside of the post and stays out! Side note Fuhr most overrated. Team won cups with Moog and Rantford in the nets!

he didn't play in the NHL but Tretiak was the best ever

No chance! All Russian players pre-91 are overrated!! They played together forever, while Canada U.S and others had to put teams together in a couple of days!! Once the Russians were free to play else where, to even the playing field, they're just an over hyped hockey power!!! Haven't won a best on best since 1981!!!! Tretiak didn't look like the best ever in 72, when he had the best "TEAM" (in terms of teamwork by playing together not talent wise)

I'm not much of a hockey guy but wasn't Gerry Cheevers considered one of the best for his time. I remeber Ken Dryden quite well and thought Cheevers and Dryden had some great games against each other in the playoffs.. Long time ago so maybe I am not remembering it right?

I don't know, I think Quick will probably go down as the best American Goalie of all time, so that puts him in the conversation. If he can manage to add Olympic gold to his repertoire before he retires he's there.

Johnny Bower. Maple Leafs.

His daughter was my very first girlfriend, grade 6. Even came to our cottage in Muskoka. No hanky panky though.

Hey Cindy, if you read this, please tell me where we went wrong. LOL

I've been a Kings fan my whole life so I am biased, but can you name an American born goalie that has been better? Mike Richter, is the only one that comes to mind and he wasn't all that great IMO. Lack of good goalies to come from the states.

Its a putrid list the top american tenders list...when you have Barasso and Richter in the conversation you know your tending hasnt been good. Another cup and Quick would be on par with those guys. Based on talent, Miller couldve had a nice career had he not been stuck in sabre hell. Well past his best before date now tho.
