Chuck Berry needs to be there - basically the George Washington of guitarist - not the best, but the pioneer who set the standard
Jimi Hendrix next to him - took the nation to a whole not-her level
Duane Allman - not the greatest, but damn good
Finally, Clapton

I really struggled with Duane vs Jimmy Page, EVH, David Gimour and SRV - all are very good and very different - the other 3 are iconic guitarist, each of who have their signature guitars that people recognize them with - you could honestly make a second Mt Rushmore of these 4 and hard to disagree with it.

Rory Gallagher damn good - but how many people know about him
Keith Richards - good, but more known for being Keith Richards than a guitarist
George Harrison - the quiet Beatle was quite good, but not guitar god good
Angus - juvenile delinquent with a signature sound
Slash - invented slash tone, but copied just about ever other move from Jimmy Page et al
Gary Moore - very underrated - but again, how many know him compared to other 70's rockers
Ed King - see above
Dave Navarro - see slash
Townsend - love the guy - but more known for destroying them than playing them
I am forgetting more I am sure...

IMO, you can't have a list that doesn't have BB King on it.

[/QUOTE]Clearly not enough people have heard of Gallagher. I have everything he's ever done, and I think he combined rock with pure blues better than any artist out there. Technically he may not have been the very best, but I like his style more than any other player. Gary Moore is also very good. But his idol was Peter Green. And that's who he tried to copy with his guitar style more than anybody else. He even did a tribute album to Green. Too bad Green got ruined by drugs and was never quite the same after his overdose back in 1971. I think for that short period of time with the orignal Fleetwood Mac between 68-71 he was the very best blues player out there. Even B.B. King said that "he is the only white guitar player who makes me sweat." Great line. And very true. Green was the shit.

don felder, pre-eagles, ran into Peter Green one day wandering the streets of boston. Felder let green stay in his aparrtment for a while, green had sworn of all material posessions and had nothing. Green may have joined a cult.

The other band member Jeremy Spencer was also heavily into drugs and like Green also found religion about the same time. Supposedly some cult. It took him years to come out of, and now like Green, he's made somewhat of a comeback as a blues musician. And Green has his band The Splinter Group. But he's not nearly what he used to be. And doesn't look anything like he did in the 70's.

Spanish guitarist Paco de Lucia died, apparently of a heart attack, in Mexico.

(CNN) -- Legendary Spanish guitarist Paco de Lucia, who is credited with transforming the folk art of flamenco into a more vibrant modern sound, has died. He was 66.
The Gipsy Kings may have gone a long way toward making flamenco mainstream, but de Lucia paved the way.
A proponent of the New Flamenco style, de Lucia's career is defined by crossover collaborations with guitarists such as Eric Clapton, John McLaughlin and Al Di Meola, and jazz pianist Chick Corea.

De Lucia was playing with family members on a beach in Cancun, Mexico, when he suddenly fell ill, according to the spokesman for his hometown, Algeciras, in southern Spain.
He died on the way to the hospital Tuesday in Mexico.
Miguel Nunez, the Algeciras spokesman, said the preliminary cause of death appears to be a heart attack.
Algeciras, near the Strait of Gibraltar, plans to declare several days of official mourning.
