Alabama running back Mark Ingram (22) drags Tennessee Chattanooga cornerback Joel Buster Skrine (21) into the end zone on a 25-yard touchdown run during the first quarter of the second-ranked Crimson Tide's 45-0 victory at Bryant-Denny Stadium. (The Birmingham News / Mark Almond)TUSCALOOSA - With two games to go before the Heisman Trophy voting deadline, Alabama sophomore running back Mark Ingram remains far out in front of the competition in a respect Heisman poll.
Texas quarterback Colt McCoy had a big game last week against Kansas, but it wasn't big enough to overtake Ingram in the
Heismanpundit.com poll.
Ingram, who played only one half Saturday and ran 11 times for 102 yards and two touchdowns in a 45-0 victory over Chattanooga, received 10 first-place votes this week, the same as last week. He received 58 points, one less than a week ago.
McCoy completed 32 of 41 passes for 396 yards Saturday in a 51-20 victory over Kansas, but all that did was gain him six points on Ingram.
McCoy trailed Ingram by 24 points last week. He trails by 18 this week.
Texas plays Thursday night against Texas A&M. Alabama plays Friday afternoon at Auburn.
Third-ranked Texas then will meet Nebraska on Dec. 5 in the Big 12 Championship game. Second-ranked Alabama will meet top-ranked Florida on Dec. in the Southeastern Conference championship game.
Here is what Chris Huston, the publisher of
Heismanpundit.com, has to say:
"It looks like this twisting and turning race finally has come down to Ingram and McCoy. Whichever of these two can finishing the strongest will win the Heisman. ... This one is going down to the wire and could be the closest Heisman race since 2001."
Huston said Texas vs. Texas A&M is the Heisman game of the week.
"The nation will tune in to the annual battle between the Aggies and Longhorns while stuffed on turkey and mashed potatoes, It's the only college game on Thanksgiving Day, so McCoy will have the Heisman spotlight to himself. He'd better get off to a fast start in this one before the tryptophan kicks in."
Huston says Ingram is the player to watch.
"Mr. Ingram, get ready for your Heisman close up. While McCoy takes center stage on Thusday, the big game on Friday will be between Auburn and Alabama. Heisman ballots have been sent out, so many of the voters will be taking a close look at Ingram for the first time. If they like what they see, he'll be set up to clinch the Heisman one week later against Florida in the SEC title game."
This is the sixth consecutive week Ingram has led the poll.
An Alabama player never has won the Heisman Trophy.
Each week, Heismanpundit.com polls a panel of 13 Heisman Trophy voters, who vote for five players each. A first-place vote is worth five points, a second-place vote is worth four, etc.
Ingram also continues to lead a
poll of 15 ESPN experts. With 13 first-place votes (one more than a week ago), he has 73 points. He leads Stanford running back Toby Gerhart by 26 points. The lead was 30 points last week.
Ingram remains atop of a
ranking of five CBSSports.com experts. With three first-place votes, he leads Gerhart by 10 points and McCoy by 16.
