At this point I'll actually respond to the Topic (gasp!)

And as someone who has worked fairly close to the mainstream print media - and to a lesser extent the radio media - I'd say it's fair to say the vast majority are social liberals and perhaps a lesser percentage are economic liberals.

While it's not the rule, it is certainly common for mainstream media folks to have a wider range of interaction with the community at large.

That wider range of exposure can contribute to an increased empathy for a wider range of people and such empathy is often expressed via socially liberal attitudes and responses.

Second, I'll agree that in the past 20 or so years, the majority of mainstream media members have become much lazier in their professions. By that, I mean a lesser number are willing to push the envelope of their immediate job roles - the opposite of which was traditionally a hallmark of good journalists.

Much of that restraint is driven by very real corporate pressure from above.

Good news (pun intended) is that the increased failings of mainstream media are driving an increased number of consumers (read - the public at large) to seek their news and information from alternative media.

At present, much of that alternative media has very dubious credentials.

But those shortcomings will continue to be progressively overcome in the same way that formerly mainstream media created their own integrity within the community.

The coming couple of decades will be fascinating as we continue to see the evolution of print, radio, television and internet based media.

As for the "9 out of 10" vote Democratic, it's actually likely closer to about 8 in 10....(smile)

But like any large industry, the 80-90% of core workers are counterbalanced by their corporate ownership - the vast majority of who are finanically conservative because that's quite simply almost a prerequisite to being a highly successful big business owner in the USA.

Thus, the big majority of "mainstream media" members may very truly be "liberals". But they're going to be continually kept in check by their corporate ownership.

And at the end of most days, that's going to be a fair and balanced end product.

In my work over the past 11 years with DrugSense, I've come to know a fair share of people who either work on newspaper editorial boards or work directly on staff with the editorial board.

These newspapers run the gamut of editorial and social attitudes - from "Pro-conservative" to "Pro-liberal" and several other blends in between.

But one thing they all have in common is that when they handle direct customer complaints (from subscribers, listeners or viewers) it's almost virtually split.

Half the complaints accuse them of being "way too liberal!!".

The other half, complaining about the exact same Editorial Opinion or news coverage, accuse them of being "way too conservative!!"

Basically, a social indictment of a very common human malady.

That is, if the particular media member or news outlet does not think pretty much EXACTLY as "I" do, then by damn, they MUST be unduly biased the wrong way.

Rather ironically, the lie is that Bush lied, and that lie is compounded by yet another lie that the Democrats only supported the removal of Saddam because they were hoodwinked by Bush, how cute. Any Senator willing to admit he's that stupid should be impeached immediately.
