FWIW, this is an example of how/why the proposed law matters.

I have been playing offshore for MANY years.

Each July/August, I post up with X amount of dollars each year.

This year, because of this law and extra scrutiny, X has been halved.

I have the cash to send to various books, but I am not comfortable sending the normal amounts because of the extra scrutiny.

The borderline books I used to send small amounts, will not get any postup this football/basketball season.

TTinco, I hope you are correct.

Poker, how the hell is the government going to make 1000+ isps ban gambling.

The government can't keep cigarettes out of kids hands. They can't keep rapists off the street. They have not been able to stop child pornography online. Right now a search on google for Build Bomb Terrorism reports 9,400,000 matches.

Do you really think there is any chance at all that the government can ban ISPs from letting you get to gambling sites (And this doesnt even involve gambling sites getting around it)

If the government bans ISPs like AOL from going to gambling sites, other ISPs will challenge the constitutionality of the law and open up their own ISPs.

When the government asked google and yahoo to stop having gambling sites in their adwords, other search engines immediately targetted gambling sites.

If I honestly thought there was any chance the gov could ban ISPs from accessing gambling sites, I would move offshore and start a ISP specifically for gamblers... You could very easily provide an 800 number and charge a good deal for it... But it will never come to that.

Just in schools alone, (Colleges and high schools) there are probably 10000 ISPs. Half these places have no clue what they are doing and rely on others to ban things... Good luck. Many major businesses are their own ISPs. Good luck telling MGM you need to block gambling you dont have anything better to do...

Sean, they could do some serious damage if the filtering was at the "internet backbone" level (which it would be).

But yeah-there would be a lot of ways around it, and it's NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!!!

I think its a reasonable question to ask, dont you?

Or are you posting what you wish to happen rather than what is likely to happen or actually happening?

I dont want these sites to be bothered, but why wouldnt they be if ISP are told to block online gambling sites?

If you think this law or proposed law will not at all effect offshore gambling, you are wishing upon stars rather than viewing reality.

PKJ is spot on with his post.

I never said it wasn't going to effect it.

But, to suggest the Mods would be breaking a law for posting on a website that has sportsbook banners and will have them end up in hot water is ridiculous.

Just because you sent 50% doesn't mean the industry has not grown since last year...I doubt any of the big well known super books are going to do less business this coming football season , compared to last.

I hear you, you are concerned and are sending 50% of your normal amount...it would be interesting for someone like Slim to come in and tell us if he's seeing any kind of drop in action at his shop.

It would be very very tough to have any effective block. Technologically it is nearly impossible.

More importantly, if censoring the internet hit the mainstream news, an unconstitutional lawsuit would be filed immediately.

If the government could block internet content, the first sites to go would be the ones with instructions on how to blow up the pentagon, ones with how to defeat airline security, ones with how to traffic underage women, etc...

The government does not block these sites because technologically it is very difficult and constitutionally, it is near impossible.

I have to agree that blocking would be difficult because it would seem to be unconstitutional. If it was possible to block why wouldn't all these kiddie porns sites be shut down. Think about all the dirty things out there that have websites that could be shut down. Do you think that the government has the man power to go through each website, read the content to determine whether or not it is a gambling site. I mean a site talking about gambling about slots and lotto numbers or horses you would "technically" be legal but talk about the Sunday NFL spreads and you get shut down!!!

You want a mainstream site that clearly breaks the law and is still up:

Youtube.com Alexa Rank 18.

Youtube clearly has a huge number of pornographic feeds on its site. It is highly unlikely that Youtube has copies of state IDs for all the actors and actresses to prove they are adults as required by federal law for pornography.

Will Youtube be shut down or will Youtube fall under the guidelines that you can not be responsible for what others post (Kind of like forums, aol, etc.) Should be a very interesting legal battle on internet censorship.

The issue of censorship is going to be tough. Is the law going to have the same definition of a "gambling site" as is used for pornography....."you know it when you see it" as stated by a Supreme Court judge.

Great example. How about the hundreds of sites that talk about how to make Meth....the most powerful and deadliest drug in the world right now. It makes crack cocaine look like cooking floor.

After reading all of the comments and posts here, one would think that it is most surely up in the air as to what is Really going to happen !

Everyone in the industry knew that "something" would happen sooner or later in this matter. When i suppose is the real question and how drastic it will be is the next question on the table at this time.

For many it will not matter what happens as Wil states people will find a way to gamble on sporting events, No matter.

If a corporation decides to restrict my access to certain sites couldn't I just switch to an ISP that would provide complete uncensored access to the Net? Seems that such providers would be coming out of the woodwork if corporations tried to steer their customers to certain sites.

One other question...if ISP do restrict access to gambling sites, how hard would it be for sites to come up with new addresses to avoid detection? Couldn't they come up with thousands of addresses that could steer members to their sites? Could a cat and mouse type scenario develop that would eventually wear down the pursuers?

What if they pass this Net Neutrality law, which will allow more regulation and content control?

yeah that will be enforceable:nohead: no offense intended my friend but that kind of talk is Paranoia

No offense taken.

IMHO i think that someday in the near future, things will most certainly change from the way as we know it at this time, thats all.

The problem is that many US bettors could be turned away from the site = less revenue for books = less revenue for the Rx. If they really go through with banning through ISP the Rx would take a huge hit as this is exactly the type of site that would be targeted first (see Washington state). Hardly anybody other than the core posters would go through the trouble of dealing with proxys. Yea the Rx would still be around but no doubt it would take a hit. Honestly SHOCKED that the Rx hasn't made any type of stand or rally

very good post

the feds created the internet (for military purposes in 70s).

therefore they think they can take it away.
