What is your opinion of Chris Moneymaker as a poker player?

been watching and reading everything I can about poker this summer and Moneymaker seems to be totally out of the whole scene. I may be wrong but just doesn't seem to have it all together(IMO).

What is your guys take on this guy?

Moneymaker is horrible... if anyone watched poker superstars, when he was playing against the good pros he was almost always the first to leave the table

Would venture to guess he makes more money PROMOTING poker than he does gambling/playing poker.

He's no better than any of us. He got lucky. Good for him though, he's set. He is no where near the league of the poker greats like Chan, Brunson etc etc

He isn't all that great of a player, but he is still WAAAY better than the majority of people give him credit for. You cannot win a tournament of that size with just luck. Many early hands in the tournament that go unseen tell the tale as to how those still left accumalated their chips so the whole story is not available. Is he as good as the people we are familiar with, no and not close, but is he better than a high majority of players in that thing? Ofcousre he is.

By that I hope you mean a tournament professional as it is pretty damn easy to be a professional at regular poker.

Poker related sources yes, BUT not the game of poker.

This is WHY he's the greatest thing to happen to poker!!

People saw this amateur win and said "Hey, if he can win, I can too!" and started playing themselves. The huge poker wave started primarily after the 2003 World Series was televised and brought in the huge influx of fish, which is what makes the game so profitable now. Anyone who plays online poker professionally or even as a profitable hobby owes part of their success to Moneymaker.
