WINKY - did you see the behind the scenes episode of sportscenter about 3 weeks ago? if you missed it I`m sure you would have enjoyed it...

***i caught about 2 minutes of it - flipping back and forth between channels. didn't have to see it - because i lived it. what was it going to tell me - that i didn't already know.

as for olbermann - i wasn't there when he was there. one of my best friends (and fantasy football co-owners) knows KO REALLY well, but nothing good from me.

of all of the days at espn - the one day i will NEVER forget was this one.

they had JUST hired a new anchor, peter rogot. i saw him in the newsroom and when i found out he was from the denver area, i spoke to him about "our" broncos. he was really cool and the reason i liked him was because he had a schnoz about the same size as me. ALL new anchors that are hired spend about the 1st week - or 2 - NOT on-air - but getting used to things.

i go downstairs to watch a game (or two?). i come back upstairs when the hilites were cut to show to dan patrick (he was going to read the hilites on air) so he could see it before going on air (a rarity - but when it happens - talent loves it - because the PA can tell the anchor why he cut the hilites the way he/she did - and to try and give the talent a better feel for the game). we are watching the hilites in thw machine when suddenly someone comes from around the corner in a pani - asking if ANYONE knows cpr? we ask why - and she tells us peter rogot was down and in big trouble. i didn't know cpr - so i didn't go - but a few others did - so they went. pretty soon the paramedics were flying thru the doors trying to help the guy.

a few hours later we are all wondering what's up with the guy - until we are told HE DIED! it was as if one of our parents had died. the worst part of it all - was that we HAD to continue working on the show - since TV doesn't call any timeouts.

that was the toughest day i ever had there - infinite times tougher than the time i came to work after playing deck hockey and saw EVERYONE in the building watching tv - seeing magic announce he had the HIV virus!

You know what the difference is between hitting .250 and hitting .300? 1 got it figured out. Twenty-five hits a year in 500 at bats is 50 points. Okay? There's 6 months in a season, that's about 25 weeks--you get one extra flare a week--just one--a gork, a ground ball with eyes, a dying quail--just one more dying quail a week and you're in Yankee Stadium!

***mees, bob ley and berman were there from the beginning (berman was hired about 2 weeks into it - same thing). when i got the job @ espn - tom mees was #2 on my list of people i wanted to meet - behind berman. after all - we both loved hockey A LOT! we would also talk it a lot, too. he was impressed someone from CA knew as much about hockey as me. that all changed one saturday.

i had to get to work for a 7:30A - 4:30P sked. back then - PAs (which is what i was) frequently worked MORE than 8-9 hours and if they were lucky they got 15-30 minutes to get time to eat. or as was frequently the case - we got 5-10 minutes off so we could run across the street to mcdonald's and get something to eat (back then the espn cafeteria was basically open banker's hours - M-F, maybe 9A-4P) - and bring it back and eat while watching our game(s). this saturday was no different. i got in early, did something, then was stage manager for the early espn shows, and then at Noon (or 1P) i went downstairs to the screening room to watch a pair of baseball games that were the nationally televised games of the week (i wanna say cbs had it then). one of the games involved the angels (i think) and the twins (i know it was the twins because the game was played in the homerdome). i watched the games - while eating - and then went to cut my hilites. by this time it was about 3-4P and i hadn't had a break all day. i am in the edit bay and writing up my shot sheet for the anchors (a shot sheet is something the person watching the game fills out for the on-air talent - it has 3 parts to it: set up/action/result - so for instance: barry bonds up to bat with 2 on in thr bottom of thr 3rd with the mets up 2-0 - bonds hits his 40th homerun of the year off mets starter tom glavine, a 3-run blast to right to put the giants up 4-3). in this game the angels (right?) pitcher was SHAUN boskie (a name i will NEVER forget). however - i f****d up and for some reason wrote "CHUCK" (why - i don't know - but i did). when i took the sheet to the anchor for the 1st sportscenter - he never told me of the error - but on-air he did call him shaun. john saunders did BBTN that night - and when i gave him the sheet - he, too, called his "shaun" - but never said anything to me. on the late night SC, however, mees DID NOT see the error and called him "chuck" (i saw an on-air copy of it the next morning when i got back to work at 7:30A). supposedly at the post-show meeting, he was LIVID about this mistake - saying the PA who made it should be fired (and that would have been ME). never mind the fact i worked 13 hours that day with ONLY a 10-minute break and worked until 8:30P despite the fact i had to be back the next day @ 7:30A - mees wanted blood - mine! i heard about this thru one of my bosses. i sent mees a card apologizing for the whole thing and explained what happened. i NEVER heard back from mees about it and every time i passed him in the hall he never acknowledged me.

that one instance turned me from a huge mees fan into someone who hated his guts - and that really hurt me to do that.

when he did die - a good friend of mine (who knew how much i hated mees) called me ASAP and wanted to make sure i wasn't responsible for it. i wasn't! however - i didn't shed a tear that he was gone. i am sorry he died - but i know the earth is a lot better place WITHOUT him! at least in my mind! i feel bad for his wife and kids. other than that - no big loss!

Damn...That is a story I didn`t expect, I pictured some great story from Winky...It must have been a deep long lasting grudge to say that...Did any other anchor know of this or try to ease the grudge? Thats too bad...Maybe you were thinking of Chuck Finley..

i doubt any other anchor knew. i wasn't thinking of chuck finley - i just had a brain cramp. i watched the freaking game for a few hours - i KNEW it was shaun boskie - i just f****d up!

it wasn't like the time they made me come to work with a 100+ degree fever (don't ask) and then got mad at me because i fell asleep at one point in time and missed something somewhat crucial. a higher up in command took me aside and was going to read me the riot act - until i told him i tried to call in sick because i had a 100+ degree fever - but was told i HAD to come into work. upon hearing this he ORDERED me to go home and get to bed and rest and when i came back to work a few days later apologized to me for having to come to work that day - even though i shouldn't have.
