I just shared a cab with a Canadian girl was was going to one of those backpack hostels nearby in San Pedro, CR. She said she didn't want to walk the 5 blocks because last evening at 6 PM another guest at the hostel was stabbed in the neck and the abdomen when he resisted a scumbag who was trying to steal his backpack. Put that in your little review.

If Costa Ria had an army and posted a soldier at every corner, most of this shit would never happen. CR not having a military is not something to boast about. It doesn't make the country any more peaceful. I think it makes it more dangerous. The police can't handle the current crime epidemic and corruption runs deep in the "CRPD" because the people don't have anyone else to turn to.

Come down to peaceful CR. Bring your backpack.

That being said...your right. But I thought CR was supposed to be some bastion of democracy that would have a system of checks and balances that would prevent that from happening. So the REAL reason behind not having a military isn't some bullshit about peace. It's that the culture can't be trust itself with one, because there's an almost inevitabilty that it will turn into a dictatorship because of rampid corruption and greed for power, as well as a populace that's under-educated and relatively helpless.

I supose that at this point there must be several reasons why it makes sense not to have an army


1) too expensive
2) what do we need it for? defend ourselves from panama?
3) do we really need the goverment to handle ONE MORE THING????/
4) an army needs people, there are much better things to do for costa ricans than being on an army
5) can you name a latin american country that is better BECAUSE of the army?

I cant think of a good reason why cr needs an army, realistically what do we need it for ? in case cr ever needs one army I am sure the US wont waste an opportunity to come and hunt for terrorists. Actually they don't even need to send an army (Example CIA and the wonderful people they put in control of Guatemala and Chile)

also the UN was also suposd to have checks and balances to prevent invasions of countries under excuses for searching WMD, all that looks great too

As far as the military goes, you make some nice points. I agree that would cause a hell of a lot more problems than it would solve, at this point in time. Also, financially the country couldn't stand it. CR is almost in bankruptcy WITHOUT a military. Could you imagine CR if it devoted 30% of it's national budget to a military? Not a pretty thought.

That's funny you should say that. While I haven't been married yet (although I'm going to give it a go one of these days), I lived with a young lady (young at the time) who had a son who just learned to walk. I raised him, and after his mother and I called it quits, I continued the "Three Men and a Baby" type relationship with the boy. The boy has turned into a young man of 17 years, I love him more than anyone in the world and I wouldn't trade him in for 100 of President Bush's best men.

Here's the kicker....(drum roll)....he's 100% Mexican. Make that Mexican-American.
