I'm with the Judge. Not many parts of the USA intrigue me like the Central Valley, the beaches, and the many national parks and rain forests of Costa Rica. The pace of life, the culture, the way people are, all 10 x better than the average American city.

The women is the icing on the cake. Sexy, sweet, in shape....

If you can bare the pollution, sub-standard conditions in publica areas, and occasional random problems, Costa Rica is for you.

Now, if you want popparazi, want to be "in the scene" and "be seen" Costa Rica is NOT for you.

Best of luck!

I suppose it depends what stage in your life you are at. I'm here with my family and frankly I love it. It is a little frustrating at times, but that soon passes as you get used to things just not happening instantly.

The small industry/gringo community means that it helps to speak spanish and make friends with tico's or other spanish speakers.

DOn't care what anyone says, it is MUCH cheaper to live here than in the States, Canada or Europe. If you are spending more to live than in the 1st world, then WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU SPENDING IT ON???

I find it much cheaper here.

Thanks guys,

In reference to " depending on what stage of your life your in? ". I am 23 yrs old, originally from Niagara, but now I reside with my 22 yr old girlfriend in a small town on Vancouver Island. We re both done university and want to have fun for a couple of years before getting on with life. I work for an airline now, and shes a pharm. tech. I kinda want to move to vegas for a few years too. What do you guys think? I love to gamble and I am very good at Finances. I am not concerned aboyut going to one of these places and becoming broke as I understand the importance of MM greatly. I wouldnt mind getting a job at an offshore book somewhere nice and warm. I am fully qualified to most jobs there except maybe graphic design and things like that. I am in no hurry to leave where I am either, so I m kinda just taking in all the info I can from some of the good people that respond to these forums.

Thanks
Brad

Vegas or CR? Are you kidding? Go to Vegas, young man. If you don't believe me, visit CR for 10 days and find out for yourself.

Thing that people don't talk about in CR is how most things we gringos like to buy are taxed heavily. You will pass out the first time you see what it costs for electronics or computers that are probably about 18 months behind what you find in Best Buy and usually about 50-100% more expensive due to the tariffs and general lack of retail competition. Cell phones and phones in general are incredible ripoffs in CR as well. Clothes are way overpriced in CR when you take value for your money into consideration as you will pay quite a bit for anything that might last more than a few washes. Too many people think about cost of living as just what you pay in rent and food, but unless you are living a very spartan life I think you will find in CR the cost of living is pretty close to that in Vegas or other modestly priced US or Canadian cities. I took all these into consideration not too long ago and did the math. It came to me that you really have to want to live in CR to have it make financial sense.

If you truly are just bumming it for awhile and probably aren't carrying too many expenses then you might enjoy it for some time. Don't get excited about Vegas either, housing costs have gone up drastically and the resulting traffic and pollution have increased a lot in just about 5 years. As it is you don't need to go to either CR or Vegas to gamble and I think you won't be too pleased with the pay you get in either location from a sportsbook.

Judge...You're a nice guy. I think you'd be happy and make the best of things wherever you happened to live. Please though, what is so impressive and special about that dive down there? Sure, there are some nice jungles and nature, but the social and infrastructure issues that CR is experiencing, and the anti-American sentiment of the people quickly negate anything good about being there. I'll take the greatest country in the world, the United States of America and take advantage of the winning lottery ticket that I hold as being a natural born U.S. citizen. The party is over down there.

By the way, those beaches are nothing to flip out about either. The beach towns are extremely backward and those beaches offer nothing special. Maybe to an Okie from Muscokee they do, but I'm from Florida, and I know what REAL beaches are like...100 yards of white sand, waves, ass, amenities, security...I believe I'll stick with that.

American, maybe its where I live.I am way the f**k up in the mountains.I walk out my back door I have a view of the entire Central Valley. The people that live up there are kind wonderful people.almost no crime to speak of.During the day,its 85,at night night probably low 60s.Perfect for a fire and perfect sleeping weather.Up there there is no pollution. The variation in vegetation is amazing.Anything seems to grow.Humming birds, parrots, macaws.Butterflies of every kind.Hummingbirds.There is the only English speaking theatre in Central America 15 minutes from my house. So I continue my first love, which is theatre. As for the beaches,I agree, some are so-so.But Manuel Antonio I will put up with some of the top beaches in the world. And I have seen a few.As for the nightlife, its hard to beat San Jose.It is truely the Wild West.Don't patronize it like I did when I first came down here, but the women in this country are beautiful. They also treat men very differently from American women. And I am not talking about pros.Like I have said before,I don't blame Americans for not liking it here. Its not home for them. But for some of us it is paradise.Different strokes for different folks. But I have yet to have someone from the States visit me,that didn't fall in love with the country.Granted, vacation and living in a place are quite different.I hope American you do get to return home in the near future, but got a feeling somewhere along the line, you just might misss this place.

I'll also add this. If you're bringing your girlfriend along CR is not this place to go. For northern Americans coming to CR this is an adult playground. Come single and leave single.

I'm writing this from Floridand I'm just about completely moved out of CR finally. It was very difficult to sell the business and home, or anything else for that matter. I enjoyed the hell out of CR up until the last 2 years or so. When I woke up one morning and realized CR was now a waste of time, I was over-committed to that place. My mistake. It sounds like you have a nice setup with you house. I liked where I lived too. The problems with CR begin when you go outside your house.

Yes, there are somethings nice about the place, and I'll miss somethings about it. But CR just doesn't offer the quality that I'm looking for at this point in life. Most days it's a big hassle just to drive to the grocery store or go to the bank. I can't live like that any more.

Everyone that I've ever met that's stayed there for an extended period of time has listed women as one of the main reasons for their staying. Throw easy women out of the equation and you don't have much.

Judge:
Everything went ok, thanks for asking.

In the end, Kat and I ran out of $$$$ but we made it using our "aguinaldos" ... so, basically, every single kid got what they needed, even the ones with special needs!!!!!

Just by looking at their happy faces, every sacrifice is worth it. Every minute of hard work was worth it! I ended up cooking a nice Christmas dinner for the 7 kids plus their 8 cousins ...

but again, it was worth it !!! I even got them a chocolate cake from Spoon and they loved it !
