What's the deal with solar panels? Many commercials in Vegas but not sure of the initial investment and longetivity. Anyone with solar panels?
Solar is a great way to cut your tax bill.....god knows the government will waste your money.
Markets will vary mostly with the amount they will produce, rules with the utility, price you pay for electricity and if there are any other incentives from the utility company or state.
Panels have a 25 year warranty and will produce 80% in year 25 that they did in year 1. There is an inverter that inverts it from direct current to alternating current. I like Solar Edge (great product and I bought their stock at $10 and it is at $50 now).
A 1 kW system in Minnesota would produce about 1,200 kWh a year. Same system in Las Vegas will produce about 1,700 kWh a year. Average home in Minnesota uses about 8,000 kWh a year. So you need about a 6.5 kW system to produce all your power. Costs about $20,000. The 30% federal tax credit is $6,000 bringing the cost down to $14,000.
That $14,000 is made up from electric saving, (some of our utility companies have rebates maybe around $5,000), some states have tax credits like Iowa.
That system in Las Vegas would produce 6.5 x 1,700 = 11,000 kWh times the rate you are paying for electricity. Would get you an idea of the payback.
Electricity is also going up much faster than the rate of inflation and that wont be changing anytime soon.
Had a guy that was very sharp buy solar getting ready for retirement. He looked at it as his overall expenses would be lower. He would need to take $140 out of retirement to have $100 after taxes to pay his $100 electric bill.
