Now hear this...

The Pac-10 season kicks into gear this weekend with a duel for first place between No. 24 Washington and Stanford. Meanwhile, bottom-feeders Washington State and Southern California square off in Los Angeles.

This is still a little early to make much of, especially when you consider the quality of opposition but this is an eye-opener anyway. In the case of the Sun Devils, will the bye week help them when they travel to UGA? I think it will but their offense is still pretty anemic, but not bottom of the barrel. This here is about defense.

Total defense through week 3:

<table class="statstable" align="center"><tbody><tr><th>Rank</th><th>Name</th><th>Gm</th><th>Avg</th><th>Plays</th><th>Yds</th><th>Tds</th><th>YdsGm</th><th>Win</th><th>Loss</th><th>Ties</th><th>Natl
Rank</th> </tr> <tr> <td>1</td><td>Arizona St.</td><td>2</td><td> 2.90</td><td>103</td><td>299</td><td>2</td><td> 149.50</td><td>2</td><td>0</td><td>0</td><td>1</td></tr> <tr> <td>2</td><td>Southern California</td><td>3</td><td> 3.69</td><td>184</td><td>679</td><td>2</td><td> 226.33</td><td>2</td><td>1</td><td>0</td><td>12</td></tr> <tr> <td>3</td><td>Arizona</td><td>3</td><td> 4.29</td><td>174</td><td>746</td><td>6</td><td> 248.67</td><td>2</td><td>1</td><td>0</td><td>14</td></tr> <tr> <td>4</td><td>UCLA</td><td>3</td><td> 3.67</td><td>205</td><td>753</td><td>4</td><td> 251.00</td><td>3</td><td>0</td><td>0</td><td>16</td></tr> <tr> <td>5</td><td>California</td><td>3</td><td> 4.23</td><td>194</td><td>820</td><td>5</td><td> 273.33</td><td>3</td><td>0</td><td>0</td><td>24</td></tr> <tr> <td>6</td><td>Stanford</td><td>3</td><td> 5.10</td><td>203</td><td>1035</td><td>6</td><td> 345.00</td><td>2</td><td>1</td><td>0</td><td>64</td></tr> <tr> <td>7</td><td>Oregon St.</td><td>3</td><td> 5.40</td><td>198</td><td>1069</td><td>8</td><td> 356.33</td><td>2</td><td>1</td><td>0</td><td>72</td></tr> <tr> <td>8</td><td>Washington</td><td>3</td><td> 6.58</td><td>166</td><td>1093</td><td>7</td><td> 364.33</td><td>2</td><td>1</td><td>0</td><td>77</td></tr> <tr> <td>9</td><td>Oregon</td><td>3</td><td> 4.44</td><td>250</td><td>1109</td><td>10</td><td> 369.67</td><td>2</td><td>1</td><td>0</td><td>82</td></tr> <tr> <td>10</td><td>Washington St.</td><td>3</td><td> 7.56</td><td>213</td><td>1611</td><td>13</td><td> 537.00</td><td>1</td><td>2</td><td>0</td><td>119</td></tr></tbody></table>

On Arizona St, they gave up 280 to ULM last week. So their number is really just a 1 week total. They are down in between 5 and 6. I only say this because Idaho St finally scored this week against Weber. We should know more about Devils after trip to UGA. They have 3 game stretch of OSU, WSU, UW, and Stanford. If they don't make hay, their season is over because they play the top half of the PAC 10 down the stretch.

Interested to see Ducks D this week considering they play a team with run / pass option and mobile QB. Can they continue to turnover the ball at the pace they are on? Also see that UW players seem to be saying the right thing in the media. Surprising for a young team. On another note, what happened to Zona and their spread. Are they just not able to throw enough to keep teams from stacking against the run? Will add that last weeks upset of USC most folks talk about QB Barkley not playing. To me, even bigger loss was not having Mays in the secondary. He's a coach on the field and considering what they lost to the NFL on defense, his loss is far more noticeable.

Arizona's front 7 got mauled by Iowa. I thought Matt Scott was showing some promise in the first few games but he had a miserable outing by the time he faced a real defense.

As far as Stanford being 7 point favorites over Washington, that jsust seems like a bizarre line and vegas must really be expecting a let down for washington. One thing of note, USC's OL dominated Washington the first 2 drives of the game, and then after that players say they got lax an lazy as UW's confidence grew. Stanford might be able to control UW as well, I still don't think much of UW's defense. Can't believe the line is so high and sounds like it's begging for blind UW money

Trees are 9-3 L12 ATS at home. They are also 9-2-1 L12 as Home Favorites. That's pretty impressive.

Not all of those have been good stanford teams. That's pretty good considering home and home with PAC10 elite and visits from TCU and other non conference teams.

WinOne,

A couple of things came to mind as I read over your points. First, there's no question that Mays is the anchor of the team, but there are few words that can begin to describe the Trojan offense going 0 for 10 on 3rd downs Saturday.

In my most optimistic take on their situation, I believe that Barkley's presence could be a matter of night and day compared to anyone else that plays QB for USC.

All the more that the team had to make due without. Crushing consequences? We'll see how much of a difference it makes when they are both healthy. We won't need to wait long.

Then there's the Stanford game. I believe that Toby Gerhart will set the tempo and Jake Locker will be chasing after him. Also, Andrew Luck rates 2nd in the Pac-10 right behind Locker in passing efficiency thus far. That's interesting to see them squaring off at this early stage. Luck could do alright.

Adding 2 more picks here:

Fresno St. +17/UC* (bookmaker)
This game is tailor made for a Pat Hill team. Road warriors to the max vs a BCS school. You couldn't ask for much more than that, but when the line hit 17, I could no longer resist. Fresno's speed is one of their best assets.

ASU/UGA U54* (bookmaker)
Any hopes ASU has of staying with the Bulldogs is for their defense to play stingy. I think they will try and perhaps fail, but UGA won't be able to move the ball at will most of the day. In any event, I don't see ASU's offense chipping in their share of points Saturday.

Already played
OSU+2/AZ**
That line is absurd. Now OSU-2 and I'd still be tempted at that number. I think ASU has some serious QB issues and if Foles starts as reported, he will be very much harassed (in his first start... and on the road at Reser.) That's a promise. On the other side, OSU QB Canfield has looked pretty sharp. With Daryll Catchings back in his 2nd week off injury, I can see him catching a long ball or 2 to put even more heat on the Wildcat defense than James and Quizz brings into this game.

Matt Barkley will start Saturday vs. WSU, PC confirmed to media after practice today. more to come.

MB is not yet 100% but he's close to it. The fact that Carroll has announced that he will start (anyway) should make one stop for minute and think about that. IMHO, this is/will be Barkley's team all the way.

Thanks Pags. I think Pat Hill can keep this one in the ballpark.

I normally would love Fresno in this spot but I am concerned. Ignoring the fact that I don't trust their QB, I think this is a bad spot for them.

They are coming off 2 emotional losses in games they played their asses off to win but failed to do so. The Wisconsin one had to be the worst of the two since they dominated most of that game.

This team tends to go up for these games, have heartbreaking losses, & have it carry over. This might be a spot for such an occurrence & throw in a 2nd trip across the country. If this game ends up being close but a S/U loss, I would sit here & be pissed that their Hawaii game is not the following week as they would be the easiest win on the board.

Like that Under play in ASU/UGA. I think this is a flat spot for UGA but don't think Devils will put much pressure on what may be a weak defense. 17-7 UGA

Traveling and pure lack of talent are going to keep Fresno away from a cover in that game.. Boise State did to Fresno just last week what Cinn is going to do 1.5x this week at home against a team that has traveled a long distance.. Might not be an easy cover but Cinn should cover.

Pure lack of talent? That comment needs an explanation.

one of the top RB on the west coast, 3 big senior WR's, physical LB's and a lack of talent? an OT loss at 9am on the road and a "played much closer than the score" game vs a top 10 foe. minus a couple of mistakes early against boise and late against wisky, and fresno may be 3-0. but they have a lack of talent? btw, gilliard is in trouble as aj jefferson is an all american DB.

cincy has an average star rating of recruits over the L4 years of (rivals)
2006- 1.95
2007- 2.25
2008- 2.26
2009- 2.48

fresno has
2006- 2.35
2007- 2.27
2008- 2.43
2009- 2.29

yeah, cincy has a ton more talent than fresno

btw those numbers make cincy the bottom dweller of big east recruiting. :toast:

El Taino,

Every fool in the east knows there's no talent to be found west of the Rockies except USC and maybe Jahvid Best.

(Enjoy it while it lasts.)

2-1 today but even in units.
Too bad the beavers made so many mistakes. You can't give away as much as that to a hungry opponent and expect to survive. OSU has some work on their hands.

For the year, a little better off from this week s results.
9-14 still -7U

I found this thread 9 pages in Sat. night. In my own defense, I had a couple of non-counting wins that I mentioned in other threads, but not in here so I won't count them in the record.

Those were:
WSU+21.5 2H
Oregon+6.5 2H

Had I searched my thread before halftime, I would have had enough time to post these plays before the 2H started. They were pretty easy calls and I will try to get them posted in time next week or whenever.

It will be interesting to see how this week's results on the WC affects lines next week. Oregon's offense looks healed. Cal vs USC and Stanford is in 1st place. the Pac-10 is turned just as upside down as everything else. 5 top 5 teams have gone down so far and 10 top 10 teams have done the same. I don't think there's ever been a September like this.

Yes I caught that Delta. What amazes me is how many fresh faces have contributed mightily this season all over the conference. Yesterday it was Foles that caught me completely off guard. Luck, Owusu, Barkley, Prince, LaMichael James, Burfict... and so on. All have become major factors in their team's successes. I must have left out at least ½ dozen more. Most of these guys were impossible to predict but they will become household names soon enough.

Definitely noticed all them. I would never expect a good performance after Foles after losing to Scott and Scott struggled against Iowa.

Tuel threw about 9 passes to a FR receiver, guy looked like he was quick and had a knack for getting open, dont remember his name but he was #1.

The most impressive I thought was play makers emerging on the ducks DL that weren't there to start the year. Kenny Rowe had a big game, and looks like a future force.
