Preview: Athletics at Mariners
GAME: Oakland Athletics (17-22) at Seattle Mariners (18-22)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, May 17 - 10:10 PM EST
WHERE: Safeco Field, Seattle, Washington
Winning on the road has been tough for Oakland Athletics, who possess the worst away record in the major leagues at 6-14. The most recent victory came in dramatic fashion, and the Athletics will look to ride the momentum into the finale of their three-game series against the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday.
Oakland was three outs away from falling to 0-5 on a six-game road trip before Matt Joyce hit a go-ahead, two-run homer and Mark Canha added a three-run blast during a five-run ninth inning en route to a 9-6 victory. The Mariners placed Robinson Cano (quadriceps) on the 10-day disabled list prior to his sitting out his sixth consecutive game as it became clear he was going to be sidelined for the remainder of the week. It marks the first time Cano has been on the disabled list since 2006, when he suffered a hamstring injury as a member of the New York Yankees "I know he's disappointed as well," Seattle manager Scott Servais told reporters. "He was going so good with the bat. ... Things happen. A lot of things have happened this year on the injury front, and this is another one."
TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, NBC Sports California (Oakland), ROOT (Seattle)
PITCHING MATCHUP: Athletics RH Jesse Hahn (1-2, 2.74 ERA) vs. Mariners RH Christian Bergman (0-1, 4.15)
Hahn settled for a no-decision against Texas in his last start despite allowing just one run and four hits over seven innings. The 27-year-old is holding opposing hitters to a .214 average and has served up just one homer in 42 2/3 frames. Hahn is 1-1 with a 2.50 ERA in three career starts against the Mariners and has enjoyed success against Kyle Seager (1-for-8).
Bergman is making his second start for the Mariners after giving up three runs and seven hits in five innings while losing to Toronto on Friday. The 29-year-old spent parts of the previous three seasons with Colorado and had major issues last year, when he posted an 8.39 ERA and 1.82 WHIP over 24 2/3 frames. Right-handed hitters are batting .354 and slugging .603 against Bergman during his 57 major-league appearances (16 starts).
WALK-OFFS
1. Mariners SS Jean Segura, who leads the American League with a .363 average, is 27-for-68 during his 15-game hitting streak.
2. Oakland LF/DH Khris Davis is just 7-for-54 this month.
3. After Seattle removed the struggling Edwin Diaz from the closer's role, fellow RHP Steve Cishek got the call in the ninth inning on Tuesday and blew the save.
PREDICTION: Athletics 10, Mariners 7
