MLB roundup: Cubs spoil debut of Mets' Syndergaard

CHICAGO -- Highly touted right-hander Noah Syndergaard made his major league debut but the New York Mets were handed a 6-1 loss to the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday night at Wrigley Field.

Syndergaard (0-1) allowed three runs and six hits in 5 1/3 innings. He worked out of jams in the third and fifth but allowed an RBI double to Starlin Castro and a two-run home run to Chris Coghlan in the sixth.

Cubs right-hander Jake Arrieta pitched a season-high eight innings and allowed one run and three hits. He struck out 10 and walked two.

Chicago rookie third baseman Kris Bryant went 3-for-4, including his second home run in as many nights.

Tigers 2, Twins 1 (10 innings)

DETROIT -- Ian Kinsler slapped an opposite field single to bring home Anthony Gose in the 10th inning and Detroit edged Minnesota.

Detroit scored two runs or less for the third straight game but Kinsler collected his fifth career walk-off hit and second of the season.

A sacrifice fly by Torii Hunter accounted for the only Minnesota run as the Twins lost for only the third time in the last 12 games.

Blue Jays 10, Orioles 2

BALTIMORE -- Mark Buehrle beat Baltimore for the fifth straight time and Edwin Encarnacion homered twice in a comfortable win for Toronto.

Buehrle allowed two runs and four hits in six innings while Josh Donaldson also got his team-leading eighth home run for the Blue Jays, who have scored 10 or more runs in four of eight games against Baltimore this season.

Baltimore's Chris Tillman lost his third straight start against Toronto, allowing five runs and nine hits in 6 2/3 innings.

Rays 4, Yankees 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Tampa Bay scored two runs in the seventh inning and two runs in the eighth and rallied for their second win in eight meetings with the New York Yankees this season.

Tampa Bay tied it on a two-run single by David DeJesus. The Rays took the lead on a sacrifice fly by Evan Longoria and a wild pitch by Dellin Betances.

Chris Archer did not get a decision for Tampa Bay as he allowed two runs and seven hits in seven innings. Nathan Eovaldi was charged with four runs and allowed six hits in 7 1/3 innings in his first loss with the Yankees.

Pirates 7, Phillies 2

PHILADELPHIA -- A.J. Burnett celebrated the 12th anniversary of his no-hitter by pitching seven strong innings for Pittsburgh in a win over Philadelphia.

Now 38 and in his 17th season, Burnett scattered six hits and allowed two runs (one earned). He struck out five and walked one -- eight fewer than his no-hitter for the Florida Marlins in San Diego.

Josh Harrison hit a three-run homer and Andrew McCutchen added a two-run shot for the Pirates, who won their fourth straight and their fifth in six games

Cardinals 8, Indians 3

CLEVELAND -- Matt Holliday hit a three-run home run in the eighth inning and St. Louis scored all its runs in a win over Cleveland with two outs.

Mark Reynolds collected three hits for St. Louis, which improved the best record in the major leagues to 23-9. The Cardinals are off to their best 32-game start since the 1941 team had the same mark.

Lance Lynn allowed four hits in six scoreless innings. He struck out nine and walked four.

Reds 4, Braves 3

CINCINNATI -- Devin Mesoraco came through with a pinch-hit double in the bottom of the ninth inning and Cincinnati edged Atlanta.

Todd Frazier hit his sixth home run in his last 13 games for the Reds, moving into a tie with Washington's Bryce Harper for the league lead.

Mesoraco's hit came off Braves closer Jason Grilli, who had missed three games with back spasms.

White Sox 4, Brewers 2

MILWAUKEE -- Chris Sale struck out 11 in eight innings and the Chicago White Sox rallied late to get past Milwaukee.

In his return from a five-game suspension, Sale (3-1) allowed two runs and three hits.

Jose Abreu reached three times and had an RBI single. Alexei Ramirez, Tyler Flowers and Micah Johnson drove in the other runs for Chicago.

Giants 8, Astros 1

HOUSTON -- Chris Heston tossed a two-hitter for his first complete game and San Francisco rolled past Houston.

Heston struck out and retired the final 22 hitters after allowing a home run to Houston's Jason Castro with two outs in the second inning. Matt Duffy had three hits and five RBIs for the Giants, who scored more than six runs for the first time this season.

Houston lost for the sixth time in eight games after winning 10 in a row. Collin McHugh allowed seven runs (four earned) and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings for his first loss in 15 starts, a streak that dated back to Aug. 12.

A's 9, Red Sox 2

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Stephen Vogt, Josh Reddick and Marcus Semien each homered, powering Oakland past Boston.

Drew Pomeranz allowed two runs on four hits over seven innings for the A's, who snapped their season-high, six-game losing streak. Pomeranz ended his three-game skid and won for the first time since his first start of the season on April 10. He struck out three and walked none.

Vogt hit his team-high ninth home run of the season, a two-run shot in the first inning. He scored twice and drove in two runs, giving him an American League leading 30 RBIs for the season. Vogt matched his career high for homers in a season. Reddick went 4-for-5.

Royals 7, Rangers 6

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Alex Gordon drove the first pitch of the 10th inning into the seats just inside the right-field foul pole, giving Kansas City a wild victory over Texas at Globe Life Park.

The American League Central-leading Royals led on three other occasions, only to watch the Rangers come back to tie before the final blow. Kansas City previously went in front in the top of the ninth.

Gordon finished 3-for-5 as the Royals racked up 12 hits off six Texas pitchers. The winning blast came off reliever Stolmy Pimentel (0-1).

Diamondbacks 14, Nationals 6

PHOENIX -- Mark Trumbo hit two home runs and drove in four runs, and Aaron Hill had three hits and two RBIs in Arizona's victory over Washington.

Trumbo hit a three-run homer to cap a five-run fourth inning off right-hander Stephen Strasburg and added a bases-empty homer in the sixth. Hill had a two-run double in the first inning as the Diamondbacks had a season high in runs while winning for the second time in three games.

Strasburg gave up a career-high eight runs in 3 1/3 innings.

Angels 5, Rockies 2

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Johnny Giavotella's one-out RBI single in the eighth inning scored Albert Pujols from second base, snapping a 2-2 tie and leading Los Angeles past Colorado.

Matt Joyce, in a season-long slump, followed Giavotella's hit with a two-run double to provide closer Huston Street (11th save) a cushion for the ninth inning.

The Rockies lost their 10th game in a row, their longest skid since they dropped 10 straight during the 2005 season. The franchise record is 13, set in the club's inaugural season of 1993.

Dodgers 11, Marlins 1

LOS ANGELES -- Howie Kendrick and Andre Ethier homered, and Los Angeles pounded Miami before 49,628 at Dodger Stadium.

Adrian Gonzalez stroked an RBI double in the sixth to extend his hitting streak to 11 games as the Dodgers (22-10) won their fifth in a row and improved to 15-2 at home. Ethier had a career-tying five-hit performance, going 5-for-5 with three RBIs. Kendrick went 4-for-5 as Los Angeles hammered out a season-high 21 hits.

Right-hander Mike Bolsinger (1-0), recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City earlier Tuesday, allowed a run on five hits in 5 2/3 innings with three strikeouts and two walks. One of the five hits, though, was a mammoth home run served up to Giancarlo Stanton in the first inning.

Mariners 11, Padres 4

SEATTLE -- Thanks to a big first inning and a season-high six home runs, Seattle rode to its fourth consecutive win, beating San Diego.

Seattle returned from an off day to extend its longest winning streak of the season in convincing fashion. The seven-run victory was the Mariners' largest of the season, while the six home runs matched the most Seattle ever hit in a game played at Safeco Field.

Mike Zunino homered twice, while Kyle Seager, Logan Morrison, Justin Ruggiano and Nelson Cruz also homered during the Mariners' most productive offensive night of the season. The last time Seattle hit six home runs in a home game was in August 2004.

Preview: Red Sox at Athletics

GAME: Boston Red Sox (15-18) at Oakland Athletics (13-22)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, May 13 - 3:35 PM EST
WHERE: O.co Coliseum, Oakland, California
LINE: 139, -151 TOTAL: 7

Sonny Gray looks to remain unbeaten when the Oakland Athletics close a three-game series against the visiting Boston Red Sox on Wednesday afternoon. Gray has been superb for an Oakland squad that possesses the second-worst record in the American League even after posting a 9-2 victory Tuesday.

The Athletics whittled away from some frustration by ending a six-game losing skid and winning the middle contest of the three-game set. Oakland stands nine games below .500 and is just 5-10 at home. Boston has lost eight of its last 11 games and has allowed seven or more runs in three of its last five games. Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz struck out three times in four at-bats and hasn’t homered in his last 14 games.

TV: 3:35 p.m. ET, New England Sports Network (Boston), CSN California (Oakland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox LH Wade Miley (1-4, 6.91 ERA) vs. Athletics RH Sonny Gray (4-0, 1.65)

Miley has lost three consecutive starts since posting his lone win April 21. He struck out a season-high eight against Toronto in his last turn when he gave up four runs and eight hits in six innings. Miley, who has never faced the Athletics, is 1-2 with a 5.59 ERA in four road starts this season.

Gray struck out nine in six innings in his last start when he gave up one run and six hits in a no-decision against Seattle. He has allowed two or fewer runs in six of his seven starts and is holding opponents to a collective .194 average. Gray received a no-decision in his lone career start against Boston last season when he gave up two runs and six hits in six innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Athletics LF Coco Crisp is hitless in 25 at-bats this season and in his past 38 regular-season at-bats dating to last season.

2. Boston CF Mookie Betts went 0-for-4 on Tuesday to end a nine-game hitting streak.

3. Oakland RF Josh Reddick had four hits with a homer and three RBIs on Tuesday and is 6-for-9 in the series.

PREDICTION: Athletics 4, Red Sox 2

Preview: Nationals at Diamondbacks

GAME: Washington Nationals (18-16) at Arizona Diamondbacks (15-17)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, May 13 - 3:40 PM EST
WHERE: Chase Field, Phoenix, Arizona
LINE: -132, 122 TOTAL: 8.5

The Arizona Diamondbacks exploded for a season high in runs in the middle game of the series and look to go on another splurge when they host the Washington Nationals in the finale of a three-game set Wednesday. Tuesday's 14-6 victory marked the fourth time in eight games that Arizona scored 11 or more runs and is also the most the Nationals have allowed since arriving in Washington in 2005.

Diamondbacks right fielder Mark Trumbo went deep twice in the victory that halted Washington’s five-game winning streak and has four homers over his past six games. Trumbo hit just two homers in April and has been held out of the lineup at times recently and now appears to be finding his power stroke. Nationals right fielder Bryce Harper continues to swing a hot bat and went 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBIs on Tuesday. Harper is 13-for-23 with seven homers and 16 RBIs over the last six games.

TV: 3:40 p.m. ET, MASN (Washington), FSN Arizona

PITCHING MATCHUP: Nationals LH Gio Gonzalez (3-2, 3.62 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks RH Jeremy Hellickson (1-3, 5.85)

Gonzalez has put together back-to-back superb outings to improve on a slow start. He struck out nine in seven shutout innings while beating the New York Mets on May 2 and gave up two runs and five hits while defeating the Atlanta Braves on Friday. Gonzalez is 2-0 with a 1.33 ERA in three career starts against Arizona.

Hellickson has struggled during a three-start winless stretch and another rough outing could lead to him being removed from the rotation. He has allowed 12 runs and 21 hits in 14 2/3 innings during the slump and opposing batters are hitting .328 against him this season. Hellickson, who has never faced the Nationals, is 0-2 with a 7.90 ERA in three home starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. Diamondbacks SS Nick Ahmed went 2-for-3 on Tuesday to improve to 8-for-50 at home this season.

2. Washington 1B Ryan Zimmerman had two hits Tuesday and is 9-for-22 during a six-game hitting streak.

3. Arizona 2B Chris Owings is 5-for-9 in the series.

The St. Louis Cardinals avoided their first three-game losing streak on Tuesday and will try to ensure a series win when they visit the Cleveland Indians on Wednesday in the second of a three-game set. The Indians are trying to avoid a third straight series loss.

Cleveland’s big problems have come from the pitching staff while dropping 11 of their last 16 contests. Indians starter Carlos Carrasco allowed four runs in 6 2/3 innings in Tuesday’s opener and the bullpen was no better in an 8-3 Cardinals triumph. St. Louis suffered a rare series loss at Pittsburgh over the weekend but got a key piece of the offense back for the current series when Matt Carpenter (extreme fatigue) returned from a three-game absence. Carpenter delivered two of the Cardinals’ 13 hits in Tuesday’s win.

TV: 6:10 p.m. ET, FSN Midwest (St. Louis), SportsTime Ohio (Cleveland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH John Lackey (2-1, 3.20 ERA) vs. Indians RH Corey Kluber (0-5, 5.04)

Lackey is coming off one of his most dominating efforts of the young season, when he held the Chicago Cubs to one run on five hits in 7 2/3 innings while striking out 10. The Texas native has surrendered a total of two runs and 11 hits in 13 2/3 innings over his last two outings. Lackey is 8-8 with a 3.94 ERA in 19 career starts against Cleveland.

Kluber had everything go right in his 2014 Cy Young campaign but is dealing with slightly more adversity in 2015. The Stetson product yielded two earned runs in each of his first three starts but has since been rocked for 22 runs (19 earned) in 23 innings over his last four outings – all losses. Kluber is facing the Cardinals for the first time and is 0-2 with a 5.09 ERA and .342 batting average against in three home starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cardinals LF Matt Holliday recorded two home runs and seven RBIs in the last four games.

2. Cleveland 2B Jason Kipnis is 9-for-14 over the last three games.

3. St. Louis C Yadier Molina has hit safely in eight straight games.

GAME: Toronto Blue Jays (17-17) at Baltimore Orioles (14-17)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, May 13 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Baltimore, Maryland
LINE: 105, -114 TOTAL: 8.5

Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Edwin Encarnacion is having trouble with his power stroke this season but, like the rest of his teammates, seems to find a groove against the Baltimore Orioles. Encarnacion belted a pair of homers Tuesday to spark a 10-2 rout for the Blue Jays, who look to continue their mastery of the host Orioles in Wednesday's rubber game of the series.

Encarnacion had gone deep once in the previous 19 games since swatting a pair of homers against Baltimore on April 21. Josh Donaldson also homered and matched Encarnacion with three RBIs, padding his numbers to 11-for-32 with nine RBIs to help Toronto improve to 6-2 against the Orioles this season. Baltimore third baseman Manny Machado collected three hits Tuesday and is 9-for-18 over his last five games against the Blue Jays. Baltimore has yielded at least 10 runs on four occasions - and all have come against Toronto.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, SNET (Toronto) MASN2 (Baltimore)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Blue Jays RH Aaron Sanchez (3-2, 3.62 ERA) vs. Orioles RH Miguel Gonzalez (3-2, 3.57)

Sanchez is coming off the best career start, overcoming five walks by limiting Boston to two hits over seven scoreless innings to run his winning streak to three. He lasted only 3 1/3 innings in a loss at Baltimore in his season debut before beating the Orioles on April 22, giving up two runs over 5 1/3 innings despite seven walks. Sanchez has 20 walks and 19 strikeouts over 23 2/3 innings while going 3-0 in his last four turns.

Gonzalez followed his longest outing of the season with his shortest, lasting four innings and surrendering five runs in a loss to the New York Yankees that halted a three-game winning streak. He was dominant in his previous turn with 7 2/3 scoreless innings of four-hit ball against Tampa Bay. Gonzalez has posted a 6-2 record with a 2.64 ERA and stellar 0.99 WHIP in 11 career appearances (10 starts) versus the Blue Jays.

WALK-OFFS

1. Encarnacion has 28 homers in 99 career games versus Baltimore.

2. Orioles DH Jimmy Paredes had a two-run single Tuesday to extend his hitting streak to 11 games.

3. Blue Jays RF Chris Colabello is 14-for-26 in seven games since his promotion from the minors.

DATE/TIME: Wednesday, May 13 - 7:08 PM EST
WHERE: Comerica Park, Detroit, Michigan
LINE: 136, -147 TOTAL: 9

The Detroit Tigers are suddenly struggling to score runs but the pitching staff is keeping the team in games. The Tigers will try to settle their affairs in the traditional nine innings when they host the Minnesota Twins again on Wednesday.

Detroit endured its second straight 2-1 decision in 10 innings in Tuesday’s opener, but this time came out on the victorious side when Ian Kinsler drove in the winning run. The Tigers have scored two or fewer earned runs in three straight games after dropping two to Kansas City over the weekend. The Twins, who have lost six of seven to Detroit in 2015, are having their own trouble scoring with a total of three runs in back-to-back losses. Minnesota averaged 8.8 runs in winning its previous four contests.

TV: 7:08 p.m. ET, FSN North (Minnesota), FSN Detroit

PITCHING MATCHUP: Twins RH Ricky Nolasco (2-1, 9.00 ERA) vs. Tigers LH Kyle Lobstein (3-2, 3.00)

Nolasco has yet to find his stride in 2015 but earned the win in both outings since coming off the disabled list ion May 2 thanks to the offense. The 32-year-old failed to record an out in the sixth inning in either of his last two starts while allowing a total of seven runs and 14 hits. Nolasco was knocked around for six runs on as many hits and four walks in three innings at Detroit on April 8 before hitting the DL due to an elbow injury.

Lobstein enjoyed his best outing of the season on Thursday at Chicago, when he held the White Sox to an unearned run on five hits in 7 2/3 innings. The 25-year-old worked at least seven innings in each of his last three turns and has yet to surrender a home run in 2015. Lobstein made two appearances – one start – against Minnesota during 2014 and was reached for a total of nine runs in 10 1/3 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Twins have been outscored 24-2 in four games in Detroit.

2. Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera is 3-for-24 in his last seven games.

3. Minnesota DH Kennys Vargas has recorded multiple hits in each of his last three games and six of nine.

DATE/TIME: Wednesday, May 13 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg, Florida
LINE: -108, 100 TOTAL: 7.5

David DeJesus did not appear to have a major role with the Tampa Bay Rays before the season began and he continues to force himself in the lineup by leading the team with a .311 batting average. DeJesus looks to add to his solid start when the Rays host the New York Yankees on Wednesday in the third contest of a four-game set.

DeJesus, who is 10-for-20 in his last seven games, knocked a pair of runs in the 4-2 victory Tuesday and Evan Longoria recorded his eighth RBI in eight games for Tampa Bay. New York dropped to 8-4 in May and saw its lead over the second-place Rays in the American League East shrink to three games. Carlos Beltran brings a five-game hitting streak into Wednesday’s game after knocking in his sixth run during that span in the second game of the series. Nathan Karns of Tampa Bay and New York’s Adam Warren hope to remain unbeaten since their 2015 debut on the mound.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, YES (New York), Sun Sports (Tampa Bay)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees RH Adam Warren (2-1, 4.65 ERA) vs. Rays RH Nathan Karns (2-1, 3.79)

Warren has allowed two or fewer runs in half of his six starts, but the 27-year-old Alabama native has yet to go past 5 2/3 innings in a game this season. He has faced Tampa Bay twice already in 2015, permitting a combined five runs and 11 hits over 9 2/3 innings without getting a decision. James Loney is 4-for-9 with a homer versus Warren, who is 0-1 with a 3.62 ERA in 12 career appearances (two starts) against the Rays.

Karns has surrendered two or fewer runs in five of his last six outings, including Friday when he blanked Texas the first seven innings before giving up two in the eighth. The Texas Tech product has held opponents to a .177 batting average in seven starts and struck out 38 in 40 1/3 innings. Alex Rodriguez and Stephen Drew each homered against Karns, who allowed three runs over 9 2/3 innings in two starts against the Yankees this season without a decision.

WALK OFFS

1. New York CF Jacoby Ellsbury has hit safely in 13 of the last 14 games, including two singles Tuesday, and has 12 runs in that span.

2. Tampa Bay RHP Brad Boxberger is 9-for-9 in save opportunities with LHP Jake McGee (elbow), who had 19 saves last season, closing in on a return.

3. Yankees INF-DH Alex Rodriguez, who is struggling with a hamstring injury, went 0-for-3 with a walk on Tuesday.

DATE/TIME: Wednesday, May 13 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati, Ohio
LINE: 124, -134 TOTAL: 8

Todd Frazier finished second in last year’s All-Star home run derby, and the Cincinnati Reds third baseman spoke Tuesday about how he would love to compete in this year’s event in his home ballpark. The Reds host the Atlanta Braves in the finale of a three-game series Wednesday, one night after Frazier hit his National League lead-tying 11th homer.

Frazier is averaging one longball every 11.2 at-bats for Cincinnati, which snapped a three-game losing streak by scoring single runs in the seventh and ninth innings of Tuesday’s 4-3 victory. Atlanta’s bullpen continues to struggle, as the Braves’ relief corps has given up a lead three times in four games. Braves third baseman Kelly Johnson has collected hits in seven of his past 10 games, while first baseman Freddie Freeman pushed his hitting streak to nine games. Reds closer Aroldis Chapman, who had allowed runs in his previous two appearances, fired a scoreless ninth Tuesday.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, SportSouth (Atlanta), FSN Ohio (Cincinnati)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Braves RH Eric Stults (1-3, 4.84 ERA) vs. Reds RH Raisel Iglesias (0-0, 5.40)

Stults struck out a season-high seven with no walks in six innings Friday, but he gave up three runs in losing to the Nationals. The Reds hit Stults hard on May 2 in Atlanta, as the 35-year-old allowed six runs on 11 hits in seven innings. Stults has allowed two homers in each of his two May outings, after surrendering only three in 22 1/3 innings across four April starts.

Iglesias made his major-league debut on April 12 against the Cardinals, giving up three runs on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts in five innings. The 25-year-old made four starts at Triple-A Louisville, going 1-2 with a 3.80 ERA. Iglesias last pitched Friday against Rochester, taking the loss after surrendering three runs on six hits in five innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cincinnati SS Zack Cozart did not start Tuesday due to a bruised left wrist, and 2B Brandon Phillips left in the eighth with a sore left big toe.

2. Atlanta P Mike Minor, who has not pitched this season, will undergo exploratory surgery on his left shoulder according to published reports.

3. The Reds have won five of their past eight against Atlanta.

GAME: Miami Marlins (15-19) at Los Angeles Dodgers (22-10)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, May 13 - 7:50 PM EST
WHERE: Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, California
LINE: 144, -156 TOTAL: 7.5

The Los Angeles Dodgers set a franchise record and moved closer to tying another with yet another dominant performance at home Tuesday. One day later, the Dodgers attempt to match their longest winning streak of the season as they eye their fourth sweep in six series at Chavez Ravine when they wrap up a three-game set with the Miami Marlins.

Behind Andre Ethier’s third career 5-for-5 effort and Howie Kendrick’s four-hit performance, Los Angeles pounded out a season-high 21 hits on its way to an 11-1 rout of the Marlins and its fifth straight win. The Dodgers improved to a league-best 15-2 at home – their best such start in 132 years of existence – and claimed their 10th consecutive series at Dodger Stadium – the first time they have accomplished that feat since the franchise moved from Brooklyn. Giancarlo Stanton went 2-for-2 and launched another mammoth homer to end a string of 12 hitless at-bats, but his first-inning solo shot was the only offense the Marlins could manage. Former Dodger Dee Gordon is 0-for-8 in this series after registering a hit in 26 of his first 29 contests, but still holds a sizeable lead for the best batting average in the majors (.412) over Los Angeles’ Adrian Gonzalez (.372).

TV: 7:50 p.m. ET, FSN Florida (Miami), SportsNet LA (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins RH Jarred Cosart (1-3, 3.67 ERA) vs. Dodgers RH Carlos Frias (3-0, 2.13)

Cosart endured his shortest start of the season in Friday’s 6-0 loss at San Francisco, lasting only four innings and surrendering all of his runs on a grand slam from Casey McGehee during his 83-pitch outing. The former 38th-round draft choice of the Philadelphia Phillies is 0-2 with a 7.00 ERA in two May turns after going 1-1, 2.49 in four April outings. Cosart will get his first career start against Los Angeles and has struggled against the only Dodger he has faced, as Kendrick is 3-for-9 with three RBIs against him.

Frias won his third straight decision – one in relief plus his past two starts – and got plenty of help from his offense during Thursday’s 14-4 victory in Milwaukee. The 25-year-old Dominican, who joined the rotation after Brandon McCarthy was lost for the season, gave up his first three runs of the season while fanning six in five frames. Frias will draw his first-ever assignment against the Marlins and looks to improve on his 3-0 record and 1.55 ERA in 10 career appearances (two starts) at Dodger Stadium.

WALK-OFFS

1. Los Angeles leads the majors with 51 homers – the second-best total in team history after 32 games (53 in 2000).

2. Stanton’s estimated 478-foot blast Tuesday is only the fifth home run to leave Dodger Stadium.

3. The Dodgers have outscored their opponents 89-47 at home, posting at least six runs in 12 of the 17 contests.

GAME: New York Mets (20-13) at Chicago Cubs (17-15)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, May 13 - 8:05 PM EST
WHERE: Wrigley Field, Chicago, Illinois
LINE: -107, -101 N/A TOTAL: N/A

The New York Mets have found the confines of Wrigley Field rather unfriendly in recent years, and they hope to avoid a sixth consecutive loss there when they continue a four-game series against the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday. The Cubs have won the first two games of the series and are trying to win their seventh series in the Mets' last eight visits to Chicago.

The Mets have slumped at the plate of late, scoring three or fewer runs in 11 of their last 14 games including a 6-1 loss on Tuesday. They hope to generate some more run support for star right-hander Matt Harvey, who gets the ball on Wednesday opposite veteran right-hander Jason Hammel. Cubs rookie Kris Bryant has found his power stroke in the series, homering in consecutive games and in three of his last four contests after failing to go deep once in his first 20 big-league games. Fellow rookie Addison Russell has reached base in 15 straight games and 17 of the first 19 contests in his major-league career.

TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, ESPN, SNY (New York), WGN (Chicago)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Matt Harvey (5-1, 2.72 ERA) vs. Cubs RH Jason Hammel (3-1, 3.52)

Harvey's return from Tommy John surgery has been wildly successful, as the 26-year-old has recorded quality starts in five of his first six outings this season. He won each of his first five outing before taking a tough-luck loss on Friday, when he gave up three runs over six innings in a 3-1 defeat at Philadelphia. Harvey’s only previous turn against the Cubs came in 2013, when he allowed two runs and five hits over 7 1/3 innings in a win at Wrigley Field.

Hammel has recorded three straight quality starts and won his last two decisions. The 32-year-old has faced Milwaukee in his last two turns and picked up the win Friday, holding the Brewers to two runs and five hits over seven innings while racking up a season-high eight strikeouts. Hammel has struggled against the Mets, going 0-3 with a 6.33 ERA in four career meetings.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Cubs are 14-2 when their starting pitchers record a quality start and 3-13 when they fail to do so.

2. Only four active Mets have faced Hammel, but OF Curtis Granderson (6-for-17, two homers) and INF Daniel Murphy (4-for-8) have enjoyed success against him.

3. Cubs LF Chris Coghlan, who hit a two-run homer Tuesday, is 3-for-5 with a double versus Harvey.

GAME: Kansas City Royals (21-12) at Texas Rangers (14-19)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, May 13 - 8:05 PM EST
WHERE: Globe Life Park in Arlington, Arlington, Texas
LINE: -110, 102 TOTAL: 8.5

The Kansas City Royals own the best record in the American League, but needed a dramatic home run to maintain their slim edge atop the Central Division. Alex Gordon's leadoff blast in the 10th inning helped Kansas City improve to 3-2 on its seven-game road trip entering the third of a four-game series at the Texas Rangers on Wednesday.

The Royals (21-12) had managed only five hits in back-to-back games before busting out Tuesday, also getting solo homers from Eric Hosmer and Mike Moustakas to rebound from a series-opening 8-2 defeat. Gordon's shot bailed out closer Greg Holland, who has his streak of 26 consecutive saves halted. Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre delivered a tying RBI single off Holland to extend his hitting streak against Kansas City to 22 games. Kansas City's Yordano Ventura opposes Texas' Yovani Gallardo on Wednesday in a matchup of two pitchers who are winless in their last four starts.

TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, FSN Kansas City, FSN Southwest (Texas)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Royals RH Yordano Ventura (2-2, 5.13 ERA) vs. Rangers RH Yovani Gallardo (2-5, 4.19)

Ventura's winless drought reached four starts when he allowed four runs and eight hits over six innings in a no-decision at Detroit on Friday. He was knocked around for five runs in 5 1/3 innings at Cleveland in his previous turn after tossing seven innings of two-run ball against the Chicago White Sox on April 23. Ventura won both his career starts versus Texas last season, giving up three earned runs in 12 1/3 innings.

Gallardo lost his fourth consecutive start at Tampa Bay on Friday, a stretch in which he has permitted three earned runs in each turn. He has permitted only three hits in two of his last three outings, but Texas has provided Gallardo with a total of four runs in that span. The 29-year-old Mexican, in his first year in the AL after eight seasons with Milwaukee, faced the Royals in his second career start in June 2007.

WALK-OFFS

1. Rangers RF Shin-Soo Choo is riding a 12-game hitting streak and is 7-for-14 over his last three.

2. Hosmer has three homers and 12 RBIs during a nine-game hitting streak.

3. Rangers 1B Mitch Moreland is expected to rejoin the lineup after going 0-for-11 with six walks during a four-game rehab assignment.

GAME: San Francisco Giants (17-16) at Houston Astros (20-13)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, May 13 - 8:10 PM EST
WHERE: Minute Maid Park, Houston, Texas
LINE: 113, -122 TOTAL: 8.5

The Houston Astros have hit a rough patch since ripping off 10 consecutive victories and look to salvage a split of their two-game interleague series against the visiting San Francisco Giants on Wednesday. The American League West-leading Astros were drubbed by the Giants 8-1 in the opener of a nine-game homestand to drop to 2-6 in their last eight contests.

Houston has been held to one run or less five times during the eight-game swoon and has scored more than three runs once in that stretch. San Francisco has a chance to move two games above .500 for the first time after starting the season with 10 losses in 14 games. Rookie Matt Duffy drove in a season-high five RBIs as the Giants amassed their highest run total of the year to improve to 8-3 in May. Giants right-hander Tim Hudson, who has never lost to the Astros, opposes lefty Brett Oberholtzer on Wednesday.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, CSN Bay Area (San Francisco), ROOT (Houston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants RH Tim Hudson (1-3, 4.50 ERA) vs. Astros LH Brett Oberholtzer (2014: 5-13, 4.39)

Hudson is coming off a brutal performance in a home loss to Miami, getting tagged for six runs and a career-worst 15 hits over 6 2/3 innings. The 39-year-old Georgia native picked up his only victory in his previous turn, allowing three runs on only two hits - both homers - over eight innings. Hudson is 5-0 with a 1.24 ERA in seven career starts against the Astros, holding them to a collective .189 batting average.

Oberholtzer will come off the disabled list to make his season debut after being sidelined late in spring training due to an issue with blisters. He opened last season by losing his first six decisions before a solid stretch of 10 starts in which he permitted three runs or fewer on nine occasions. Oberholtzer stumbled down the stretch, though, going 1-5 over his last six starts and failing to go past 4 1/3 innings in half of them.

WALK-OFFS

1. Astros RF Colby Rasmus is 6-for-14 with two homers against Hudson.

2. Duffy is 10-for-20 with eight RBIs during a six-game hitting streak.

3. Astros DH Evan Gattis is mired in an 0-for-15 rut over the past five games.

GAME: Chicago White Sox (13-17) at Milwaukee Brewers (12-22)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, May 13 - 8:10 PM EST
WHERE: Miller Park, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
LINE: 102, -110 TOTAL: 8

Fresh off their first road win in nearly a month, the Chicago White Sox eye a third straight series victory when they visit the Milwaukee Brewers in the finale of a three-game series on Wednesday. The Brewers head into the rubber match trying to win four out of five for the first time this season as they slowly turn things around.

Chicago had not won away from its own stadium since Apr. 18 at Detroit before evening the current series at one win apiece with a 4-2 triumph on Tuesday. The White Sox are winners of five of their last eight games but improved to just 3-12 on the road and are looking for their first series win outside their own stadium. The Brewers had a three-game winning streak come to an end with Tuesday’s loss but are 8-5 in their last 13 games after beginning the season 4-17. A big part of that is an increase in production from Ryan Braun, who has driven in a run in each of the first two games against Chicago and has scored 11 times in the last eight contests.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, CSN Chicago, FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee)

PITCHING MATCHUP: White Sox LH Jose Quintana (1-3, 5.03 ERA) vs. Brewers RH Jimmy Nelson (1-3, 4.00)

Quintana has allowed two or fewer earned runs in each of his last three starts, but needed 107 pitches to make it through five frames in a loss to Detroit on Thursday. The Colombia native struck out a season-high eight in that outing while walking a pair. Quintana faced the Brewers once previously in 2012 and tossed eight scoreless innings, but did not factor in the decision.

Nelson struck out a career-high 11 against the Cubs on Friday, but took the loss after allowing four runs on five hits – three home runs – in seven innings. The 25-year-old has surrendered two or fewer earned runs in four of his six turns. Nelson is taking his first career turn against the White Sox and is 1-1 with a 2.05 ERA in three home starts this season.

WALK-OFFS

1. Brewers 3B Aramis Ramirez (back) has missed the last five games and remains day-to-day.

2. White Sox RHP David Robertson notched a pair of strikeouts in Tuesday’s save and has 25 in 14 innings overall.

3. Chicago C Tyler Flowers is 4-for-6 with a pair of doubles in his last two starts.

GAME: Colorado Rockies (11-18) at Los Angeles Angels (16-17)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, May 13 - 10:05 PM EST
WHERE: Angel Stadium of Anaheim, Anaheim, California
LINE: 155, -168 TOTAL: 8

The Colorado Rockies are riding a 10-game losing streak - their longest since 2005 - as they prepare to visit the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday in the finale of their two-game interleague series, but perhaps that isn't the worst news involving the team. Shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, a four-time all-star, reportedly is on the verge of asking to be traded as Colorado appears headed for its seventh losing season in Tulowitzki's 10 years with the club and fourth in a row.

Tulowitzki is scheduled to meet with his agent Paul Cohen on Thursday in Los Angeles after Cohen told the New York Post: "To say that (a trade) is not a possibility would be silly" and "it doesn't take a rocket scientist" to see why the subject is heating up. The problem Colorado (11-18) seems incapable of overcoming is a pitching staff which has an eye-popping 5.48 ERA and only six quality starts - both by far the worst in the majors. The Angels, meanwhile, improved to 5-3 on their nine-game homestand with a 5-2 victory Tuesday, breaking a 2-2 tie with three runs in the eighth inning. Los Angeles' Hector Santiago hasn't won in three starts - all Angels' losses - and allowed one earned run or fewer in four of his last five turns and opposes Jordan Lyles, who yielded 11 runs (10 earned) in losing his last two outings - both to Arizona.

TV: 10:05 p.m. ET, ROOT (Colorado), FSN West (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rockies RH Jordan Lyles (2-3, 4.42 ERA) vs. Angels LH Hector Santiago (2-2, 2.57)

Lyles yielded four runs and nine hits in a season-high seven innings of a 5-1 loss May 6. The 24-year-old South Carolina native was 2-1 with a 2.92 ERA after defeating San Diego 2-1 on April 23. Lyles is 2-1 with a 5.82 ERA in four games (three starts) against Los Angeles and has fared well against Mike Trout (2-for-8).

Santiago earned a no-decision after allowing one hit and four walks while striking out five in 6 1/3 innings of a 3-2 loss to Houston on Thursday. ''Hector absolutely deserved to get that win, and that's where you feel the most frustrated,'' teammate Huston Street told reporters after allowing three runs in the ninth inning. ''I told him: 'Hey, I'm sorry, man.''' Santiago, who is 3-6 with a 3.67 ERA in 21 games (17 starts) at Angel Stadium, has never faced Colorado.

WALK-OFFS

1. Los Angeles 1B Albert Pujols on Tuesday snapped an 0-for-13 slide with a single in the eighth inning and stole second before scoring the go-ahead run.

2. The Rockies' Nick Hundley is batting .409 with two home runs and eight RBIs during his career-high 13-game hitting streak, which is tied for second-longest in club history by a catcher with Joe Girardi (1995) and trailing only Yorvit Torrealba (16 in 2009).

3. The Angels improved to a major league-best 97-55 in interleague games since 2007.

GAME: San Diego Padres (17-17) at Seattle Mariners (15-17)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, May 13 - 10:10 PM EST
WHERE: Safeco Field, Seattle, Washington
LINE: 111, -120 TOTAL: 7

Nelson Cruz is finally getting some help, and Seattle is beginning to look like the contender many felt it could be after hitting its most homers in a game since 2004. The Mariners look to stay perfect on a long homestand when they wrap up a two-game series with San Diego on Wednesday.

Five different Seattle hitters went deep - including two by Mike Zunino - in Tuesday's six-homer 11-4 rout of the Padres, which matched the Mariners' best output for runs this season and gave the club a season-high four straight wins. Cruz did homer late in the contest, his major league-leading 15th, and has slugged one in five consecutive interleague games, which is tied with eight others for the all-time record. He will attempt to establish a new standard against San Diego right-hander James Shields, who has served up seven home runs in his last two starts.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres RH James Shields (4-0, 4.25 ERA) vs. Mariners RH Taijuan Walker (1-3, 8.13)

Shields is looking to become the first Padres pitcher since 2007 to start a season 5-0 but his last two outings - both wins - have not been pretty, as he has allowed a total of 10 runs while struggling to keep the ball in the park. The veteran has 26 strikeouts in 17 1/3 innings over his last three starts and pulled into Tuesday's play leading the National League with 11.69 punchouts per nine. Shields is 3-3 with a 3.61 ERA in seven career starts at Seattle.

Walker had a slight rebound from a rocky performance at Houston on May 2, allowing three runs in five innings while fanning six to help the Mariners win 4-3 in Oakland on Friday. The former first-round selection has been a bit better at home, where he has surrendered four runs and nine hits in 10 1/3 innings. Walker, 22, is 0-2 with a 7.00 ERA and 10 walks in nine innings over two career interleague starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. Mariners 2B Robinson Cano is batting .405 with four home runs and nine doubles against Shields.

2. The Padres are 0-4 in interleague games this year.

3. Seattle SP Hisashi Iwakuma (lat strain) was shut down for up to two weeks due to tightness, manager Lloyd McClendon told reporters Tuesday.

PREDICTION: Padres 5, Mariners 4
