PELICANS at HAWKS 8:05 PM
Take: HAWKS -9
The long wait is over, and the New Orleans Pelicans have finally broken their 2015-16 maiden. The Pelicans finally got their new up tempo offense rolling and ended up earning a comfortable win over the Mavericks last night.
Maybe this win gets the Pelicans going, but I’m going to have to bet against that occurrence tonight. It’s the second of back to backs for New Orleans, and they’re having to face an Atlanta team that figures to be smarting off a lackluster loss to Minnesota.
The Hawks were pretty awful against the Timberwolves. Give Atlanta credit for fighting back from an enormous deficit to make things interesting in the final quarter, but this was a bad performance.
There’s some evidence to suggest the Hawks will play a much better game tonight. NBA trends are generally going to be small sample, but when something works, the idea is to play it out until it doesn’t anymore. In this case, it’s discovered that Atlanta has been really good coming out of a really bad game. The Hawks are a nifty 10-1 vs. the number off a double digit home loss. There haven’t been a whole lot of those lately as this was a very good team last year, but I like the fact they’ve rebounded so impressively in the next outing, and I can see the same thing happening again tonight.
I’m also not giving all that much weight to the Pelicans performance on Tuesday night. The Mavericks didn’t play much of a game and gave New Orleans loads of open looks. That probably doesn’t happen tonight as one would at least expect Atlanta to play much more diligently on defense than they did against the Wolves.
No bargain on the price, but this is a situational spot I believe is worth taking a shot with, so I’ll be laying the number with the Hawks tonight.
