Give credit (or blame?) to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: David Lee Roth is back with Van Halen and planning to tour.

The mercurial Roth, who officially left Van Halen on April Fool's Day in 1985, will reunite with his old band for a tour that kicks off in North Carolina in early May and includes June stops in L.A., Orange and San Diego counties, according to sources in the concert industry.

Joining Roth will be guitar hero Eddie Van Halen and drummer Alex Van Halen. But bassist Michael Anthony reportedly will be replaced by Eddie Van Halen's teenage son Wolfgang.

The band had been planning a splashy press conference in L.A. to announce the news, but word leaked out Thursday. There had been intense speculation that the reunion might happen after the announcement this month that the band would be inducted into the Hall of Fame in New York on March 12.

That induction ceremony at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel could be a study in awkward stage politics now, considering that Sammy Hagar, the on-again-off-again replacement for Roth, is being inducted as well.

Hagar sang with the band on their lucrative tour dates in 2004 and 2005 and told The Times a few weeks ago that he hoped the ceremony would be a good-spirited celebration of the band's legacy. Now, he faces the prospect of playing the rock bridesmaid at the celebration of his band's rekindled first marriage.

Hagar and Roth have feuded publicly, and in 2002, when they turned their public animus into a tour of strange bedfellows, the venture dipped into soap opera almost daily.

It's not technically Roth's first return to Van Halen; he appeared onstage with the band at the MTV Video Music Awards in 1996. They recorded a few songs but then it was all off again.

The return of Roth will be met with exultation by fans of the band's edgier and and raunchier Sunset Strip metal roots and their remarkable six-album rise to the top of rock stardom, which began with "Van Halen" in 1979, an album that has shipped more than 10 million copies to stores, according to the Recording Industry Assn. of America. Hagar's entry into the lineup in 1985 marked a step toward a less aggressive edge and more mainstream sound.

Fans have long debated which lineup truly rules and now Roth will get a chance to present his argument onstage for the first time since the Reagan administration

Can't pick just one.

W/DLR: Somebody Get Me a Dr, Romeo Delight, Mean Streets, Hear About It Later(The intro is killer).

W/Sammy: Feelin', Mine All Mine, Judgement Day, Take Me Back.

At least today, lol. Like many have said, too many. I enjoy most of their stuff. I'm with FW on Jump. That was what I like to call their bathroom and beer song. You're at a concert, love the band, but hate one song that everyone else loves. They start the tune, everyone in the concourse comes running in to see it, I head to the bathroom and grab a beer. No wait. I walk back in as the song is ending and don't miss any songs I want to hear with a fresh beer and empty bladder. :suomi:

Curious as to thoughts on the upcoming money gr..err..."reunion". I personally will not be attending. This is a band that I will always listen to, but keep most of this band in my memories. I had the good fortune to be in my midteens when VH I took off, and grew up as they became the biggest band in the world. Saw them 5 times w/ DLR. Roth would forget the words a lot of times, but seeing this band in it's prime, especially Eddie, is something I prefer to stay tucked away in my head. They were unstoppable. Not much into nostalgia. Ironically, I believe Eddie made similar comments not too long ago.

I can understand why those younger, or have never seen them w/ DLR want to see this. I hope you get your money's worth. But just remember that the vocal skills of MA will be very noticeably absent.

wow. VH getting back together with Roth? how many times has this rumor started. i'll bite and go along for the ride. the act most likely lost it's impact after all these years if they actually do some touring with Roth. they seem too old and crusty to give us much of the old magic. who know though?!?!?... maybe i'm wrong and they show some fire from days of yore. but can't leave michael anthony out !... thats' too weird.

i got turned on to VH in the 7th grade in 1979-1980. A friend's older brother had VH1 and VH2 albums... blasted them after school everyday. we just sort of sat in the basement air drumming and air guitaring while he turned the volume higher than we ever heard a stereo go indoors. we couldn't even hear each other talk. I got a VH shirt down in Wildwood NJ that summer and the next year the kids in school were calling me "van halen" because they didnt know who the band was yet and I would always wear that damn shirt.

soon after... VH was my first ever concert. so i got to see them with diamond dave down at the phila spectrum... where cigarettes, weed, and lighters filled the arena with thick smoke all nite long. blondes with big titties sitting on shoulders and screaming all nite.

here it is... 26 friggin years later and they are gonna get back together? F yea man ! lol little do they know... but they would fill the biggest arenas all over again if they could even touch what they did way back when. i'd like to see them have that one more time after all the bullshit.

Did they open up for Black Sabbath? If that was the concert I was there sitting on the stage the whole night. It was also the loudest concert I was ever at and was actually pissed off about it.

Went to 200 concerts and none of them were as loud as Black Sabbath that night. And the lead guitarist for Black Sabbath sucked big time that night also.

Van Halen was awesome the first 2 years. After that they became a joke in concert as Roth didn't care at all if he sung the songs right and Eddie was starting to get pissed about it. Roth was drunk all the time and the bad sucked because of it.

I don't recognize so many of these song titles. I never thought about the fact they have such a huge following.

I always looked at it as they had a bunch of great tunes in the Roth era, totally lost the edge afterwards. Than came out with that watered down non sense 'right now' and that was the end of it.

Pretty suprising to see this. I have nothing against it.

not sabbath - it was some odd russian metal band that knew they weren't wanted. they played with the lites on and people weren't even paying attention to them for the most part. VH came on and my ears haven't been the same since.

5150 was the last VH album i got. liked it very much as something different, but nvr bought anything more.

why no Michael Anthony

Just curious why he's not involved. Is he fighting with the VH brothers now too, or has issues with DLR?

Yes they did open for Sabbath, and I agree that Sabbath was the loudest band I ever saw.

Ok Valerie, it's time to step in and be Mommy. Stop this madness of your 15 year old son going on tour with the legendary VH.

No one here thinks Daddy won't get a little F'd up out on the road? No one here thinks old women still living in the '80's won't try and pop little Wolfie's cherry? Drugs, Alcohol, F'd up women. How ya going to keep a 15 year old away from this? Your not.

"Ok Wolfie, jam session is over now. Run back to the bus and catch some shut eye, Daddy's got a bottle of whiskey to polish off and a bitches name on my knob for her to polish off as well. Good Night little Wolfie."

What the Fuck? Sorry guys, I just can't bring myself to see this show. This is sad sad sad. I know some of you will defend little Wolfie and say "Give him a chance". Uh hello, 15 fuckin' years old people! Yeah Yeah, buy March he'll be 16. So what, doesn't change my position. Sammy had it right, if Eddie wants to help Wolfie launch some kind of career, this is not the wise way to do it by throwing him out on tour with a 'shell of what they were' legendary band like Van Halen.

And Roth. Don't get me started there. Simply put. What's the betting line on whether or not they finish the tour with Roth in the line up? Roth is a big fuckin' PRICK! No way in hell can Eddie tour with Roth without being screwed up, nice roll model there Daddy-O!

Getting rid of Mike Anthony just because he talks with Hagar. Jeezus, talk about insecurity. Now I know loyalty is a huge thing with the VH brothers, but come on, they weren't doing anything at all for almost a decade and what is Mike Anthony suppose to do? Go down with the Titanic and drown? I think Mike Anthony's position during the whole time was, " Hey fella's, when your ready to get off your ass and want to produce some great music, give me a call because I'm bored and aging away over here."

I bet these Van Halen concerts get terrible reveiews and it won't take long for word to get out just how sucky they are and the attendance will drop.

David Lee Roth - Old recycled prick of a bitch who can't sing anywhere near like he used too. You'll see.

Wolfie - 15. Please make sure you don't get rodded in the contracts little boy. Make sure a Harry Potter book is part of the deal.

Eddie - Well Eddie, what can I say. You've really turned out to be a turd. Oh, you can throw a coat of paint on the turd, but it's still a turd. And what's up your looks? Hope your not on meth or heroine, Daddy-O.

Alex - Nice job brother for keeping little bro in check. Always thought you were smarter. Loyalty brother, loyalty!!!! Hey fuck the emergency row boats, lets go down with the ship and fuckin' die.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present you VAN HALEN.

Buster why wouldn't Ozzie say that? It was the truth. Black Sabbath suck in concert big time. One of the worst live acts I have ever seen and I have seen as many as 300 bands play live. Probably more.

I think he did say that and that's what started the break up. As you know Ozzie went from a horrible guitar player to a great one. And then another one! Ozzie didn't make the same mistake twice.

It had to suck singing for a crappy guitarist after watching a guitar player who really played great and tried to get new sounds out of his guitar. Unlike the stiff for Black Sabbath.
