Olympic men's soccer is kind of weird. The World Cup is obviously the biggest international competition in the sport and while the Olympics is still a big deal because it's the damn Olympics, it's not for the best of the best in men's soccer.
The competition is limited to players 23 years old or younger. So it's kind of like the U-20 World Cup or U-17 World Cup — a youth championship.
But it's still not quite that simple.
MEN's Soccer Teams at the Olympics are allowed three over-age players. So it's U-23, plus three older guys. It's how Brazil are bringing Neymar to these Olympics. He's one of their over-age selections.
It still gets more complicated, though.
The Olympics is not on the FIFA international calendar so clubs are not required to release players for the tournament. If Barcelona wanted to bar Neymar from playing in the Olympics, they could.
Argentina do not have Paulo Dybala for the Olympics because Juventus refused to let him play and there was nothing Dybala or La Albiceleste could do about it.
There are a lot more players who were kept from the Olympics by their clubs too.
To recap: Olympic Men's soccer isn't the best against the best, or even really a U-23 tournament, and it's not even the best of the U-23s.
So, for those accustomed to making their Betting decisions based upon which team is most skilled, it may not be the best thing to Bet, Unless someone follows U23 players throughout the world (and the 3 Old Guys that each team is allowed to have) closely enough to know what their individual level of skill is, whether they are entirely healthy or not and feels that they can make a solid educated guess about how well they will play with other players some of them will be unaccustomed to playing with.
Bottom line is that, for those who don't have great knowledge of that stuff mentioned above, there are a few important pieces missing to "handicapping" Olympic Men's Soccer.
And the missing pieces mentioned may not even be the absolute worst part.
There are some countries that don't take the Olympics very seriously. But there are some that it means a lot to, like Brazil. The Selecao are hosting the Olympics so they want to show well and they're trying to put the shame of their 7-1 loss to Germany on home soil at the 2014 World Cup behind them. An Olympic gold would help with that and that's why they're taking Neymar.
So, as you're watching the men play soccer at the Olympics, keep in mind all the rules and circumstances that landed these players there. It had a lot to do with their age, except for three of them, and what the Pro Soccer Clubs they have contracts to play with wanted. Or did not want.
It's messy, but that's Olympic soccer for you, at least on the men's side.
Women's soccer is the best against the best so if that's what you're looking for, just flip that on.

It's the simplest thing, but it's become sort of like my soccer mantra.
I simply use the ball as my focus point and move back into position,
and the distracting thoughts disappear and I'm right back in the game.
I missed so many shots in college, oh my gosh, because I was thinking larger than life. I was thinking about my career and my stats and wins and losses and the whole school depending on me. And now I don't miss more shots in a game because of the pressure, and if I do miss, I'm secure -- I'm confident in myself.
I'm a lot more composed and I smile so much more. The fans see it, my teammates see it, my coaches see it that when I'm playing well, I look happy.
Not everyone's game face looks like that way. Some people are fierce, some people have a really hyper strain in their face when they are playing great. But I just have a smile ear to ear.
I love what I do, and everyone can see that. I think of all game faces, a smile would be the least intimidating -- but maybe in a reverse psychology way it is!"

Friday, April 6, 2012, I’ve gone on before about just how difficult the Swedish language is to learn.
The pronunciation of a single word can take several tries, and still, a subtle mistake results in a botched mess. My teammates laugh as I push my face forward, straining to mimic the movement of their lips.
The Swedish people are proud of their language, they claim it sounds like a song (yes, if you like to listen to songs played backward
), 
and my new friends are enthusiastic to teach me one of the most popular words: lagom. As difficult as it is to pronounce, the real challenge is accepting its concept.
There is no English word for lagom. Subsequently, the Swedish proverb -- "lagom är bäst" -- does not translate for me.
When is "enough [ever] as good as a feast"? My teammates told me that this notion is a cultural norm here in Sweden. For the most part, excess is not welcome.
They explained that that is why you do not see flashy cars on the streets.
I have surmised that lagom means enough, sufficient, adequate, just right, in moderation, in balance, optimal, and suitable.
It is the idea of not too little, but not too much. Lagom suggests the feeling of appropriateness.
In similar circumstances, we Americans tend to use words like “sufficient” and “average,” which carry connotations of mediocrity.
In my world, people strive for perfection and anything less feels like a let down.
