This whole thing is so silly. This is nearly as stupid as Congress having their worthless hearings on who is taking steroids in baseball. I hope Snyder changes it to a more "offensive" name.
Anyone that is offended by a sports franchise name should be sterilized.
I agree, if it was as offensive to people as all talking heads say it is, it would have been gone, just ask Donald Sterling.so if 90% of American Indians aren't offended why should anyone else be??????
This is completely outrageous. Who game the USPTO the authority to determine what is "offensive" anyway?
So does that mean the United Negro College Fund and National Association for the Advancement of Colored People should have their trademarks revoked?
Anyway:
Not all Native Americans oppose the term Redskins. Capital News Service identified three majority Native American high schools that use it proudly, including Red Mesa High School in Arizona.
“Being from Native American culture, [the term] is not derogatory,” said Tommie Yazzie, superintendent of the school district that oversees Red Mesa High School. He identified himself as a “full-blooded Navajo.”
Red Mesa High School is located on a Navajo reservation, and 99.3 percent of its students are Native American, according to the National Center for Education Statistics.
Here is a map of the 62 high schools that currently use the nickname "Redskins" As has already been pointed out, the name is in use on Indian Reservations.
The fact of the matter is that this decision has nothing to do with what is "offensive" and everything to do with useless government bureaucrats getting their rocks off in telling other people what they can do.
