A Kong. Let him play to get it out. Another reason the crate is a must. Teach him to eat in there.

Dog will eat out of or off anything if it's hungry enough. Train the dog, don't let it train you.

Props on getting them from a shelter. +1

really, why have him eat in the crate?
You got your dog from the Humane Society. They recommend traininghim to eat in the crate. A crate is like a lions den. They find comfort and security.

Step 2: Feed your dog his meals in the crate
After introducing your dog to the crate, begin feeding him his regular meals near the crate. This will create a pleasant association with the crate.
If your dog is readily entering the crate when you begin Step 2, place the food dish all the way at the back of the crate.
If he remains reluctant to enter the crate, put the dish only as far inside as he will readily go without becoming fearful or anxious. Each time you feed him, place the dish a little further back in the crate.
Once your dog is standing comfortably in the crate to eat his meal, you can close the door while he's eating. The first time you do this, open the door as soon as he finishes his meal. With each successive feeding, leave the door closed a few minutes longer, until he's staying in the crate for ten minutes or so after eating.
If he begins to whine to be let out, you may have increased the length of time too quickly. Next time, try leaving him in the crate for a shorter time period. If he does whine or cry in the crate, don’t let him out until he stops. Otherwise, he'll learn that the way to get out of the crate is to whine, so he'll keep doing it.

rule of thumb, keep the eating bowl down for 25 minutes then pull it up,that means food time is over for that period

you probably know this already, but feed twice a day only

never give a treat for no reason, dogs just want to please you anyway so when he does something good, listening to a command, something in your training,etc.,..let him earn it

never let him eat in the crate, never.

get three hand ball type balls and play with him by rolling them in different directions, this will keep him focused on retriveing and bringing them back to you,now you should do this in a small area of your yard cause you are not throwing them far just rolling them in a small area

never put your dog on a long chain thats hooked to something like a tree, this only pisses him off and if and when he gets a chance to get loose he will run and run and you will end up chasing your dog.if he is trained off of any chains like that you have a much better chance of having your dog walk along your side

don't let him walk you either, you should use a correction collar which they call a pinching collar and just a little tug on it when he is not listening or paying full attention to you will get his attention, believe me

a good tool to use when crate training him in the crate at bedtime to sleep is have a radio with music playing just lightly, this way he thinks someone might be near and won't cry too much at night

there's a lot more but there is just some training tatics that you can use

I have had dogs my entire life and love them all! That being said the 2 I have currently both came from a shelter and they are absolutely perfect! Got them both crate trained (also a first) and they love going in there because it it their home. They sleep with me and only go in when I leave. I will never again get a dog from a breeder or a store.

bullshit

eating in the crate is the best thing you can do. Don't leave it in there all day, but when it's time to eat, crate is the way to go.

A choker collar is not the way to go either. If you're are having a problem with him not wanting to heal or walk beside you, use a harness.

I don't even know what to say about the rest of this. The music ain't a bad idea I guess.

  1. Feed all meals exclusively in the crate. Feed him with the door closed, wait until he finishes, then open the door. If he won't eat with the door closed, you can work up to closing the door for the duration of the meal by beginning with him eating his entire meal with the door open.
  2. I reaally don't want to go any further with this with you, I really don't.

Also they have been incredibly healthy for the first 6 years. Recently my little girl was diagnosed with lymphoma and she is halfway through her first round of chemotherapy and is doing great! She is a pitbull and I know that cancer is a little more common in the breed, but even with that being said I would not hesitate to get another one because she has been so wonderful!!

Best breed there is for a lot of reasons. Hope she continues to find the strength to fight the battle, sir.

this is why threads like this are bad.there are many different ways people train dogs, depending on the breed and there will be 1001 answers and he will never know which one is the right one,and all in all everyone most likely has the right ideas.

i don't want to start a back and forth deal about this with you,as you did make some very good points, and some others also did,but when you respond to mine with the word BULLSHIT,well thats when im done talking about the subject anymore.

so ill just let you have your merry way and give defying all the advice,...good luck my friend
