'Bad day for Alejandro Valverde who was taken to hospital after a bad fall in the slick rain soaked course'

various riders went down.

'He's going the hospital right now. The most difficult thing is the (kneecap) seems to be broken, and then because of the crash against the wall, there is a deep cut in the leg.

One thought I have regarding Chris Porte and his surprisingly poor start. Today's stage was in the rain with very slick roads. We just can't come to the conclusion that Chris Froome has this race all wrapped up ! Froome went for it and attacked the course while Porte took a far more conservative approach to the stage. Its unfair to say that Richie Porte made the wrong decision. The next Time Trial will be at the end of the Tour and results could easily be reversed. It's easy to be an arm chair QB AFTER the day is done but what if Froome's daring ride had resulted in a bad fall ? I think today's result had nothing to do with who was in best form but more about different strategies. Time will tell !

good points. It's very early but nonetheless, stage 1 was a surprise. Porte was favored to beat Froome in stage 1 matchup; -150. Also, at thegreekk he has gone from +170 to +250. Froome is now -120. Froome is a risk taker. We saw that last year with his aggressive tactic during a descent.

Porte after stage 1;

"It wasn't a day to take risks," Porte said.
"It was just a matter of keeping it rubber side down. I saw my teammate [Nicolas Roche] bin it and I was petrified to be honest. It was such a slippery course."

stage 2 in the books, more crazy rain. Team Sky continues to show early strength. Got lucky, Froome went down!! Survived. 12 sec behind his teammate. Porte 47sec behind

how fitting a German wins from Dusseldorf to Liege, Kittel wins

</path></svg>I don’t know what to say. I’m super happy that I got this victory today. It was an incredible start in Germany. So many people. And for me, it would be wrong to say I had no pressure, it all comes out now and I really wanted to have this win. It was for me a big goal for me to start in Germany and win at the end of that stage. If we’re honest and look to the plan, it didn’t work at all. The good thing was I came pretty late, I could jump from the wheels. I just thought, OK, I need to take my own way, and I was just jumping from wheel to wheel and in the end I could go to the front, and I am super relieved.

As expected, today's stage was a sprinters stage. Marcel Kittel was the winner with a impressive and exciting push at the line. What wasn't expected was Chris Froome and a few of his teammates taking a fall ! Although nobody seemed seriously injured, this is never a good event to happen this early in the Tour. We shall find out as the race moves along whether this fall will have any affect on overall result. Speaking of moving along, I'm taking a look at the weather prediction for tomorrow's stage. I'm hoping the rain that has caused the course to be quite slippery the last two days takes an exit and it looks promising. Tomorrow's stage will favor a strong sprinter like Peter Sagan and that's my predicted winner. Also perhaps we will get a better read on whether Froome will feel any lingering affects from today's spill.

Interesting finish in today's stage as going into the final km Richie Porte surprisingly took the lead. However Peter Sagan nonchalantly cruised by him and the rest of the field. However Sagan's foot slipped off his pedal with just 400 meters remaining and usually that can spell disaster. It made the finish close but Sagan still prevailed over a fast closing Michael Matthews. The main GC race remained unchanged as Team Sky and Chris Froome stayed close to front throughout today's stage. Geraint Thomas of Team Sky retains yellow Jersey.

Stage 4 tomorrow will be another day for the sprinters. Marcel Kittel's type of stage but I expect a bunch there at the finish line. Mark Cavendish would have been my pick in previous years but he clearly has not fully recovered from his earlier illness. I expect it to be a walk in the park for the GC contenders as they get ready for a showdown in stage 5 the following day !

Arnaud Demare of France wins today's sprinters stage. Ugly finish as Mark Cavendish hits the right barrier and appears to have suffered a serious injury. Another crash not too far back involved a number of riders including Sky's Yellow Jersey leader Thomas but all riders get the same time when a crash occurs in the last 3 km.

All the talk after today's stage is about the crash that involved Mark Cavendish and Peter Sagan. These two cyclists are two of the biggest names in cycling. A protest is being lodged against Peter Sagan by Mark Cavendish Team Director I believe. My perspective is that Mark Cavendish was taking a very narrow path on inside and Peter Sagan was slightly ahead at the time. However the big question is he appears to use his elbow to push off but was it intentional ? I think not but it's close ! We shall soon see what UCI rules. It's,even possible that Sagan could be disqualified but i seriously doubt it.

The so called penalty against Peter Sagan has been handed down. It's a 30 second time penalty which amounts to nothing really. It only takes away his 2 nd place finish in today's stage. It does keep Chris Froome in 2 nd place but that is actually meaningless at this point in race. I agree with decision as it certainly was an aggressive elbow but not intentionally trying to cause injury. However he shouldn't have been awarded a 2 nd place finish so justice prevailed. Tomorrow will be the first real test for the GC contenders in the mountains. Should be interesting !

Sagan disqualified from the Tour for throwing that elbow.

It now appears that the jury has studied more film and have changed their original decision and have indeed decided to disqualify Peter Sagan for his elbowing and also coming into Mark Cavendish's line. It's a decision that I read is unpopular with many fellow sprinters but I'm not aware whether there is any appeal available. Peter Sagan was a HUGE favorite to win the green jacket once again so assuming he is indeed out of this year's Tour, it opens up a big spot for sprinters like Marcel Kittell.

Now I have the answer as Peter Sagan has appealed the disqualification! I assume a final answer will be rendered soon as Sagan must start tomorrow's stage or he's out.

Kermit, any thoughts on stage 5 winner? I assume Froome or Porte?

The danger is that the leading GC contenders just might let a breakaway go without a chase. However I think Porte will be going for it tomorrow so I think I'd go with Porte based on recent form but it will be a dogfight as Chris Froome likes this type of,stage. I'm just going to watch this one myself. Should be a dandy !
