It's actually harder for canadians to live in the usa than other immigrants. I can't just apply for a work visa (nevermind that I own a company, I am not an employee lol).

Their tourist visa for canadians is much stricter than CR, can only go for 6 months on, then I have to stay away for 6 months. If I break the rules I risk being banned for up to 10 years. I can't risk that because of all the real estate I own in the usa, and the amount of business I do there.

Partly the reason I live in CR is I don't know where else to live. It's an easy limbo.

personally I would love to spend a year in Australia...so that I can do the tourist shit and then the not so touristic stuff in calm and taking my time.

the US states that I like (which are normally the least populated and pretty isolated but are normally very peaceful and beautiful) all have terrible winters.....I could put up with one or two......but not much more than that.

CR has spent a shitload in me (via education) so I am not going anywhere as in moving...I can put up with everything (potholes....traffic jams etc) ....but the thing that is truly getting out of hand is the crime. No matter how much money you throw at that problem ...you just can't get rid of it.

I'd like to live in Florida just to be closer to the Mrs' family and of course the weather. Vancouver and Toronto are great cities if you don't mind the Wet (vancouver) or the Cold (Toronto).

I'll bitch about it here but it has a lot to do with the government more than the people. 50% tax on electronics stings

Very difficult to annex crime when you do not have a legitimate judicial system in place. :>(

Well you're right, I suppose the judicial system creators never thought this country was gonna deal with all these foreigners escaping from poverty and violence in their own nations, our location in the middle of the continent makes us the perfect bridge for all the drug trafficking and the problems related to it. The system needs to fixed no doubt about that.

the problem is not really foreigners or not

the problem is that if you steal less than 'x' amount .....its a 'free ride' ...and then if you steal more than 'x'......you still seem to get several 'get out of jail' (literally!!!) cards

the 'flagrancia' tribunals are a good start.....we just need 1000 more of those...and a place to put the people who are going to be sent to jail

Most or all of nonviolent misdemanors such as stealing up to a certain amount, vandalism, grafitti, should be enforced much more stringently, with offers of inter city trash detail and probation over the current catch and release. Easy to implement, postive results, with both the shame factor and good PR.

Roman systems of law are doomed to fail or atleast make your life a living hell with all the dumbness and red tape. Installing a system of law based on logic is a good start, but its just a start. Hire someone to lead the country who has experience in law could help. The other way was a disaster and look she is running for president! LOL. Build the police force from the ground up and try hard to end corruption. Keep kids in schools, stop pushing away foreign investment, increase jobs and punish crime. All things to consider. I hope for all this can happen soon.

I like this guys understanding of greek vs roman law.

What amount of crime goes unreported in Costa Rica do you think? 10%-20%-30%-40%-more?

I have heard its 25%+ No idea if that is true.

Lets hope the green party is not reelected.

You know a great amount of people in this country vote for these parties for mere tradition, people have finally started to think and may be this next elections we will see different results.

About the amount of crime that goes unreported I bet is more than 25%

this thread turned the gay

LMAO

I take turns loving and hating CR.

Every time a great looking Tica is leaving my place in the morning, I'm thinking "Man, I love Costa Rica". And every time my cell phone gets cut off because I didn't get a bill for 4000 colones, I think I've arrived at planet of the apes.

Access to Cuba is the best thing going for CR for me. But there are plenty things here I'm not too crazy about...

Every time I'm walking along a particularily gross street with more than average litter I ask why they don't just make trash detail prison crews. 2 birds with one stone for sure!
