Western Kentucky vs Vanderbilt

10* Bonus Play Western Kentucky

This selection isn't so much due to liking Western Kentucky, but "playing against" Vanderbilt. Western Kentucky's been a solid team for 2 straight years, going 8-4 SU in 2014 & 8-5 SU last season while beating Central Michigan in their Bowl game. On the other hand, Vandy ended the 2014 season at 3-9 SU, with their only 3 wins coming against outgunned football programs like U. Mass, Charlestown South & Old Dominion- All are more known for their Basketball teams than their Football programs. Vandy averaged just 17 points per game last year and was held to 17 points or less in 8 of their 12 games. They ended at 0-8 SU in the Dog role and that's exactly where they find themselves to open this season- As home Dogs hosting Western Kentucky. On Thursday Western Kentucky starts their 2nd season behind HC Jeff Brohm, who finally got everything together near the end of last season while finishing on a 5-0 SU & 3-2 ATS winning run. Combine last season's late improvement with that confidence building Bowl victory and you MUST back Western Kentucky to beat up on a rebuilding Vandy team.

Preview: White Sox at Twins

GAME: Chicago White Sox (61-70) at Minnesota Twins (69-63)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, September 03 - 1:10 PM EST
WHERE: Target Field, Minneapolis, Minnesota
LINE: 119, -129 TOTAL: 8

Minnesota Twins slugger Miguel Sano was named the American League Rookie of the Month for August on Wednesday and showed it was no fluke by homering in his third consecutive game later that evening. Sano and the Twins look to continue their home dominance of the Chicago White Sox when they go for a three-game sweep Thursday afternoon.

Despite dealing with a mild hamstring strain, Sano has eight homers and 17 RBIs over his last 14 contests for Minnesota, which is one game behind Texas for the second wild card. The Twins boast a 42-25 record at home and have fattened that mark at the expense of the White Sox, winning eight of nine meetings this season at Target Field. Chicago has lost seven of 10 overall and been shut out three times in its last seven games. The White Sox face a nemesis Thursday in Twins right-hander Kyle Gibson, who has beaten them twice this season while allowing one run in 16 innings.

TV: 1:10 p.m. ET, WGN (Chicago), FSN North (Minnesota)

PITCHING MATCHUP: White Sox RH Jeff Samardzija (8-11, 4.85 ERA) vs. Twins RH Kyle Gibson (9-9, 3.82)

The dog days of August applied to Samardzija, who lost all six of his starts last month and was knocked around for at least five runs in all but one of those outings. He took the loss against Seattle on Saturday after permitting five runs and eight hits over 5 2/3 innings for the second consecutive turn. Samardzija gave up at least one homer in four straight outings and has been taken deep eight times during the six-start skid.

Gibson knows what it's like to suffer through a lengthy winless drought - he broke a seven-start dry spell by blanking the Houston Astros on four hits over 5 2/3 innings in his outing. Pitching deep into games has been an issue for the 27-year-old Gibson, who has failed to get through six innings in six of his last eight starts. Gibson has held Melky Cabrera hitless in 11 at-bats while also stifling Jose Abreu (1-for-9).

WALK-OFFS

1. Twins 1B Joe Mauer has reached base safely in 23 consecutive games.

2. Cabrera is 3-for-31 in his last eight games against Minnesota.

3. Twins 3B Trevor Plouffe had a two-run double Wednesday to improve to 6-for-11 with 19 RBIs in bases-loaded situations this season.

PREDICTION: Twins 5, White Sox 3

Preview: Braves at Nationals

GAME: Atlanta Braves (54-79) at Washington Nationals (67-65)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, September 03 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: Nationals Park, Washington, District of Columbia
LINE: 219, -240 TOTAL: 8

Ryan Zimmerman is enjoying a blistering stretch and the host Washington Nationals hope he doesn't cool down on Thursday when they open a four-game series versus the reeling Atlanta Braves. Zimmerman belted a pair of homers against St. Louis on Wednesday in a 4-3 win by Washington, which swept Atlanta on two occasions this season when the National League East rivals met at Nationals Park.

Zimermann increased his home run total to seven in his last nine contests and 200 in his career, but did not face Thursday starter Matt Wisler in the rookie's two previous meetings with the Nationals. Washington, which resides 6 1/2 games behind NL East-leading New York, wraps up its seven-game homestand with three contests versus the Mets. Whether the Nationals have Bryce Harper in their lineup is a mystery, as the 22-year-old exited Wednesday's tilt with a tight left glute. Atlanta (54-79), which was swept by Miami on Wednesday, has been outscored 67-19 en route to losing eight in a row overall and fell 25 games under .500 for the first time since 1990.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, SPSO (Atlanta), MASN (Washington)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Braves RH Matt Wisler (5-5, 5.22 ERA) vs. Nationals RH Jordan Zimmermann (11-8, 3.45)

Wisler dropped his third straight trip to the mound and fell to 0-4 in his last six outings on Saturday despite allowing two runs on four hits in six innings of a 3-1 setback to the Mets. The 22-year-old kept the ball in the park against New York after surrendering four homers in 2 2/3 frames versus the Chicago Cubs in his previous start. Wisler was drilled for six runs on nine hits in four innings of a 7-0 setback to Washington on June 25 before allowing just one hit in 5 1/3 scoreless frames one week later to pick up the win against the Nationals.

After losing three decisions in four outings, Zimmermann rebounded by winning his third straight start by allowing one run on seven hits in as many innings of a 5-1 triumph over Miami on Saturday. The 29-year-old has surrendered six homers during his winning streak after keeping the ball in the park in five of his previous six trips to the mound. Zimmermann is 2-0 against Atlanta this season and 6-2 in his career after tossing seven strong innings in a 13-4 victory on April 29 and scattering six hits over 7 2/3 scoreless frames in a 6-1 triumph two months later.

WALK-OFFS

1. Washington 2B Anthony Rendon is 16-for-43 (.372) with nine RBIs during his 11-game hitting streak and C Wilson Ramos is 14-for-37 (.378) with three homers during his 10-game stretch.

2. Atlanta C Christian Bethancourt is 0-for-9 in his last four contests and 3-for-24 in his last nine.

3. Nationals RF Jayson Werth is 7-for-18 with two homers, four RBIs and four runs scored in his last four games.

Preview: Pirates at Brewers

GAME: Pittsburgh Pirates (79-52) at Milwaukee Brewers (57-75)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, September 03 - 7:20 PM EST
WHERE: Miller Park, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
LINE: -150, 138 TOTAL: 7.5

The Pittsburgh Pirates continue to be plagued by the Milwaukee Brewers and the rest of the National League Central at large. After getting swept in its last visit to Miller Park, Pittsburgh looks to prevent a similar fate by salvaging the finale of its three-game series against host Milwaukee on Thursday.

Former Brewer Aramis Ramirez went deep and drove in four runs in the Pirates' 9-4 loss on Wednesday and has three homers in his last four outings as he looks to finish strong while playing the final season of his 18-year career. Unfortunately for Pittsburgh, it has dropped three in a row overall and eight of the 14 meetings with Milwaukee this season to fall to 21-31 against its division foes. While the Pirates reside six games behind NL Central-leading St. Louis, the Brewers are enjoying their role as spoiler by winning three straight and four of their last five. Jonathan Lucroy is 18-for-40 (.450) with 11 runs scored during his 10-game hitting streak, but is just 4-for-24 in his career versus Thursday starter Francisco Liriano.

TV: 7:20 p.m. ET, ROOT (Pittsburgh), FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Pirates LH Francisco Liriano (9-6, 3.28 ERA) vs. Brewers RH Taylor Jungmann (8-5, 2.48)

Liriano overcame two homers to record a no-decision after allowing three runs on four hits in six innings against Colorado on Friday. The 31-year-old Dominican is 5-0 in his last 11 starts, but fell to 6-5 in his career versus Milwaukee after permitting three runs on five hits in eight frames of a 4-1 setback on June 9. Liriano continues to struggle with his control, issuing three walks in each of his last three outings and 15 in his last five.

Jungmann scattered three hits over six innings to pick up the win in a 5-0 victory over Cincinnati on Friday. After alternating wins and losses over his last six outings, the 25-year-old will look to start a positive streak versus a club against which he has won both career starts. Jungmann went seven innings in both outings versus Pittsburgh, yielding one run on three hits in a 4-1 triumph in his debut on June 9 before permitting one run on five hits in a 6-1 victory on July 19.

WALK-OFFS

1. Pittsburgh RF Gregory Polanco is 0-for 16 with four strikeouts in his last four contests.

2. Milwaukee SS Jean Segura is 9-for-18 with four RBIs and six runs scored in his last four games.

3. Pirates 1B Pedro Alvarez is 2-for-22 in his previous nine contests.

Preview: Tigers at Royals

GAME: Detroit Tigers (61-71) at Kansas City Royals (81-51)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, September 03 - 8:10 PM EST
WHERE: Kauffman Stadium, Kansas City, Missouri
LINE: 173, -188 TOTAL: 8

The Kansas City Royals have gone seven straight series without a loss since dropping two of three in Detroit early last month and can extend that streak when they host the Tigers on Thursday in the rubber match of a three-game set. The Royals averted their first three-game skid since July 29-31 with a 12-1 drubbing Wednesday night.

Lorenzo Cain ran his hitting streak to 10 games with a homer and three RBIs, helping Kansas City go deep four times in a home game for the first time since June 24, 2012. Rookie Cheslor Cuthbert, promoted from Triple-A Omaha on Monday, belted his first career homer and matched his season RBI total with four. Detroit has lost 10 of its last 12 games and its pitching staff has been ravaged for 46 runs over the past five contests. Rookie Matt Boyd, acquired in the deal that sent David Price to Toronto, will make his third start against the Royals in a month when he opposes Edinson Volquez.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, FSN Detroit, FSN Kansas City

PITCHING MATCHUP: Tigers LH Matt Boyd (1-5, 7.12 ERA) vs. Royals RH Edinson Volquez (12-7, 3.27)

Although Boyd is winless in his last four starts, he earned his first major-league victory against the Royals on Aug. 5, permitting one run on seven hits over seven innings in his Detroit debut. The 24-year-old had a tougher time in a rematch at Kansas City five days later, taking the loss after allowing three runs on nine hits in 5 1/3 innings. He has surrendered six homers in his last three starts, including three at Toronto on Friday.

Volquez rebounded from a rocky performance in a loss at Boston on Aug. 23 with 6 2/3 strong innings at Tampa Bay last time out, limiting the Rays to one earned run and six hits. The 32-year-old Dominican struggled against the Tigers in a home start on Aug. 12, allowing six runs (five earned) and eight hits over seven innings. He is 1-4 with a 5.34 ERA versus Detroit and has to be wary of Ian Kinsler, who is 5-for-13 against him.

WALK-OFFS

1. Royals DH Kendrys Morales has homered four times in his last eight games.

2. Tigers rookie RHP Guido Knudson is the first pitcher since 1914 to give up at least one homer in his first four career appearances.

3. Royals 3B Mike Moustakas (hamstring) will not be in the starting lineup for the third straight game, but is available for pinch-hitting duties.

Preview: Giants at Rockies

GAME: San Francisco Giants (69-64) at Colorado Rockies (54-78)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, September 03 - 8:40 PM EST
WHERE: Coors Field, Denver, Colorado
LINE: -125, 115 TOTAL: 11.5

The San Francisco Giants aim to halt their five-game losing streak on Thursday, when they open a four-game series against the host Colorado Rockies. San Francisco lost Wednesday to suffer a three-game sweep at the hands of Los Angeles and finds itself 6 1/2 games behind the first-place Dodgers in the National League West and 5 1/2 in back of the Chicago Cubs for the second wild-card spot.

The Giants dropped three one-run games in the Los Angeles series as Buster Posey didn't score or drive in a run while going 8-for-14. San Francisco, which has lost 11 of its last 16 overall contests, is just 5-7 against the last-place Rockies this season. Colorado racked up 18 hits while recording a 9-4 victory over Arizona on Wednesday as Carlos Gonzalez homered twice and drove in a career-best seven runs. Gonzalez is just 1-for-17 against scheduled Giants starter Ryan Vogelsong, but Wilin Rosario has fared much better by going 5-for-14 with three homers.

TV: 8:40 p.m. ET, MLBN, CSN Bay Area (San Francisco), ROOT (Colorado)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants RH Ryan Vogelsong (9-10, 4.19 ERA) vs. Rockies LH Chris Rusin (4-7, 4.94)

Vogelsong has lost consecutive outings, allowing 14 hits and seven walks in just eight innings during the stretch. He has served up 11 homers on the road this season compared to just five at spacious AT&T Park. Vogelsong defeated Colorado on May 22, when he allowed two hits over six scoreless innings and is 6-3 with a 4.38 ERA in 17 career appearances (12 starts) against the Rockies.

Rusin has lost back-to-back starts and three of his last four. He gave up 11 runs and 12 hits in two-plus innings of a loss to the New York Mets on Aug. 22 and followed up by allowing three runs and five hits in six frames against Pittsburgh on Saturday. Rusin has a 1.35 ERA in two career starts against the Giants as he gave up five runs (two earned) and 10 hits in 6 1/3 innings while receiving a no-decision on June 27.

WALK-OFFS

1. Giants 2B Joe Panik (back) will begin a rehab stint at Triple-A Sacramento on Thursday and is expected to return next week.

2. Rockies 3B Nolan Arenado hit a two-run homer on Wednesday to raise his NL-leading RBI count to 100 and become the first Colorado player to hit the century mark since the recently traded Troy Tulowitzki (105) in 2011.

3. San Francisco SS Brandon Crawford (oblique, calf) has missed seven of the last eight games.

Preview: Dodgers at Padres

GAME: Los Angeles Dodgers (75-57) at San Diego Padres (64-69)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, September 03 - 10:10 PM EST
WHERE: Petco Park, San Diego, California
LINE: -146, 135 TOTAL: 7

The Los Angeles Dodgers are soaring toward the National League West title and look to pad their lead on Thursday, when they open a four-game series against the host San Diego Padres. Los Angeles swept three games from San Francisco and has won eight of its last nine while opening up a 6 1/2-game lead over the second-place Giants.

Los Angeles' Adrian Gonzalez has tormented his former club by batting .391 with six homers and 14 RBIs this season. Gonzalez has 25 blasts in 2015, but all four of his 30-homer campaigns came from 2007-10 when he played for San Diego. The Padres have lost seven of their last 10 contests and got an 11-game homestand off to a rocky start by losing two of three to Texas, including Wednesday's 4-3, 10-inning loss. San Diego's Justin Upton is 10-for-20 with two homers against scheduled Los Angeles starter Mat Latos while Matt Kemp is just 3-for-22.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, SportsNet LA (Los Angeles), FSN San Diego

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers RH Mat Latos (4-9, 4.76 ERA) vs. Padres RH Colin Rea (2-2, 5.95)

Latos is 0-2 with a 6.05 ERA in four starts since being acquired from Miami. He has worked fewer than five innings in each of his last three outings and went 16 days between appearances before a 4 2/3-inning no-decision (two runs, four hits) against the Chicago Cubs on Saturday. Latos is 0-2 with a 2.08 ERA in four career starts against the Padres - his first major-league club - and gave up three runs and six hits over six frames in a loss on July 26 in his final start for the Marlins.

Rea has lost his last two outings after winning his first two major-league starts. He fell to Philadelphia in his last turn, when he gave up four runs and six hits in five frames. Rea has pitched fewer than six innings in each of his turns and has struck out four in every start.

WALK-OFFS

1. San Diego C Derek Norris (shoulder, elbow) and 1B Yonder Alonso (back) are both doubtful for the opener after missing Wednesday's game.

2. Los Angeles C Yasmani Grandal is 1-for-34 over his last 12 contests.

3. Kemp is batting .333 in 45 at-bats against the Dodgers - his former club - but hasn't hit a homer.

mlb thursday

atlanta-washington: i do know the braves are not playing well and haven’t since about the middle of may. i also know that wisler has had his struggles. however, there is no chance of laying -250 with zimmerman – let alone in washington’s first game back from a tough series in st. louis. if there were ever a time to take a flyer, this might be it.

pirates-brewers: yes, liriano is a very good pitcher, but youngmann may give milwaukee their best chance. i do like the under here if for no other reason than the pirates bullpen has been in lock down mode. i can’t ignore the fact that jumgmann has allowed three home runs in 90+ innings, and one since june 30th. couple that with his 1.17 whip which is in the elite category – and i could make the case for the brewers rl at the very least.

giants-rockies: hard to fathom vogelsong being -135 on the road, but that’s what it is. since he (vogelsong) came out of the bullpen to take a turn in the rotation he hasn’t lasted more than six innings, and even six only once. that’s tough to get behind even with the huge bullpen advantage the giants have. it’s also impossible for me to back rusin, and not so much because of his inconsistency but the fact that he threw 113 pitches last game. there’s a reason why this total is 11.5.

dodgers-padres: everyone seemed to want to get behind rea in his last outing against the phillies, but he’s really done nothing to impress after his first start against the reds. tough to fathom the dodgers, even with latos, only being -120 which is either a complete gift or a big public disaster (not unlike the red sox). latos hasn’t lasted through the fifth inning in three straight starts, and la comes in after a big series against the giants – so i suppose we could make a case for – the over?

white sox-twins: a day game, so let’s be diligent and see what lineups come out. gibson has been very good to us, but i don’t know about -145 to a team that’s seen him and might have some motivation for getting whacked by him back in may. i suppose that’s something to grab on to if your chicago. gibson has thrown four straight 101+ pitch games – something he’s not accustomed to. chicago typically does fare better against rhp’s as well. and yes, samardzija has been crucified of late – so backing the sox is tough as well. one could perhaps conclude that the over is the play, but samrdzija and gibson are both somewhere between their recent performances. i do think it (the total) goes to 8.5 at some point, and perhaps the under. opening at 8 is seemingly signaling a pitcher’s duel, and let’s face it, these teams are not the yankees.

tigers-royals: again, for as good as the royals can be and as bad as the tigers have been, there’s no reason to make volquez -200 against a left handed pitcher, something we know the royals can struggle with at times. i’d think differently if volquez has been pitching great, but looking beyond the wins and losses, he’s allowed 13/14 flyball outs in his last two games. we of course know detroit can hit the ball. they (the tigers) have all seen him at least once. this could be a f5 under – can’t take the game under with the possibility of detroits’ bullpen being overly involved. yes, boyd’s given it up all over the place, but he’s already pitched against the royals twice.
