Cardinals LF Holliday leaves game with elbow injury

The Cardinals are already missing outfielder Jon Jay, who has sat out the last two games with a sore thumb. Now, however, they may be missing an even bigger bat from their lineup: left fielder Matt Holliday.

The Cardinals' No. 3 hitter was hit in the left elbow by a pitch from Cleveland's Corey Kluber in the first inning of the Cardinals' 2-0 loss to the Indians Wednesday night. The ball appeared to hit Holliday directly on the point of the elbow.

The blow drove Holliday to his knees. He appeared to be in great discomfort, and the game was delayed for a few minutes to allow him to recover before taking first base. Holliday stayed in the game initially, but after the first inning, he was replaced by Pete Kozma.

X-rays on Holliday's elbow were negative. He is considered day-to-day but it seems likely that he would probably be held out of Thursday afternoon's game.

MLB roundup: Indians' Kluber strikes out 18 in win

CLEVELAND -- Corey Kluber struck out 18 batters in eight innings, tying the Indians' record for a nine-inning game, as Cleveland beat the St. Louis Cardinals 2-0 on Wednesday night at Progressive Field.

Kluber had a no-hitter until Jhonny Peralta singled with two outs in the seventh. It was the only hit off the Cleveland right-hander.

Kluber, who did not walk a batter, was bidding to become the first Indians pitcher to pitch a no-hitter since Lenny Barker's perfect game on May 15, 1981. Kluber's 18 strikeouts tied the Indians' record for a nine-inning game set by Bob Feller on Oct. 2, 1938, against the Detroit Tigers. With Kluber's pitch count at 113, Cody Allen entered and pitched a perfect ninth for his fifth save. Kluber and Allen combined to strike out 19.

The Indians took a 2-0 lead in the first inning after John Lackey walked the first two batters he faced -- Jason Kipnis and Carlos Santana. Kipnis later scored on a single by Brandon Moss, and David Murphy singled to score Santana.

Reds 5, Braves 1

CINCINNATI -- Raisel Iglesias took a no-hitter into the sixth inning en route to his first major league victory and Marlon Byrd and Todd Frazier homered for Cincinnati.

Iglesias didn't allow a hit until Eric Young Jr.'s bloop single leading off the sixth. The 25-year-old Cuban gave up one run and two hits with three walks and five strikeouts in eight innings in his second career start.

Joey Votto singled to drive home Zack Cozart in the first inning and Byrd hit his seventh home run of the season. Frazier's 12th home run sailed 432 feet and gave the Reds a 4-0 lead.

Red Sox 2, A's 0

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Wade Miley threw 6 2/3 shutout innings and Boston handed Oakland's Sonny Gray his first loss of the season.

Miley allowed five hits but walked four and repeatedly pitched out of jams as he snapped a three-game losing streak. Gray gave up one run and three hits, struck out nine and didn't walk a batter in seven innings.

Daniel Nava went 2-for-3 with an RBI and scored a run for the Red Sox. Hanley Ramirez had two hits in four at-bats and scored a run.

Nationals 9, Diamondbacks 6

PHOENIX -- Michael Taylor hit a grand slam with one out in the ninth inning and Washington won its fifth straight series.

Jayson Werth hit a three-run homer and Tyler Moore also homered for the Nationals, who have won six of seven and 12 of 15.

Arizona's Yasmany Tomas broke a tie at 5 with a single in the eighth. Paul Goldschmidt had three hits and finished a home run short of the 14th "natural cycle" in major league history -- the hits in order from single to homer.

Phillies 3, Pirates 2

PHILADELPHIA -- Cole Hamels pitched seven strong innings and Jeff Francoeur threw out the potential tying run at the plate to end the game as Philadelphia ended a four-game losing streak.

Hamels allowed two runs and five hits while striking out nine. Ken Giles worked a scoreless eighth for the Phillies and Jonathan Papelbon pitched the ninth for his seventh save this season and his 113th for Philadelphia.

Andrew McCutchen drove in both runs for the Pirates with a fifth-inning single, but Pittsburgh saw a four-game winning streak end.

Rays 3, Yankees 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- For the second night in a row, Tampa Bay beat first-place New York, getting clutch outs to strand 10 Yankees on base.

The game shifted on two plays at the plate -- Asdrubal Cabrera made a smart read on a bloop single to score the winning run from second base in the second inning, and Mark Teixeira was thrown out by Rays center fielder Kevin Kiermaier for the final out the fifth.

Orioles 6, Blue Jays 1

BALTIMORE -- Caleb Joseph sparked a five-run second inning with a two-run double and Baltimore's Miguel Gonzalez shut down Toronto for 7 2/3 innings.

Joseph's double down the left field line off Toronto starter Aaron Sanchez gave the Orioles a 2-0 lead and that proved more than enough for Gonzalez. The right-hander gave up one unearned run and three hits.

In the five-run second, the Orioles also got RBI doubles from Manny Machado and Alejandro de Aza, plus a run-scoring infield single from Jimmy Paredes. Rookie Rey Navarro hit his first major league home run in the eighth.

Rangers 5, Royals 2

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Shin-Soo Choo and Prince Fielder each had a home run and two RBIs to lift Texas over Kansas City.

Choo was 2-for-4 with a home run to lead off the game and Fielder's two-run homer in the second inning provided a cushion for Yovani Gallardo, who snapped his four-game losing streak. Gallardo (3-5) gave up two runs, six hits and a walk and struck out two in seven innings.

Twins 6, Tigers 2

DETROIT -- Joe Mauer tripled with the bases loaded to highlight a five-run third inning that carried Minnesota to its 10th win in 13 games.

The Twins, who scored just one unearned run in its first three games of the season in Comerica Park, could tie the Tigers for second place in the American League Central with a victory in Thursday's series finale.

Cubs 2, Mets 1

CHICAGO -- Jeurys Familia walked in pinch-runner Matt Szczur in the ninth inning and Chicago rallied past New York.

Entering in a tie game with the bases loaded and none out in the bottom of the ninth, Familia struck out Jorge Soler but then walked Chris Coghlan on five pitches to force in the winning run.

The victory was the Cubs third straight in a four-game series that ends Thursday. The National League-East leading Mets have dropped three in a row.

Marlins 5, Dodgers 4

LOS ANGELES -- Giancarlo Stanton drove in three runs, including two with a seventh-inning single, to lead a three-run Miami rally.

Dee Gordon went 4-for-5, hit two doubles and scored two runs as he raised his average to .426, the best in the major leagues.

White Sox 4, Brewers 2

MILWAUKEE -- First-inning home runs from Avisail Garcia and Adam LaRoche gave Jose Quintana all the run support he'd need and Chicago won its first road series of the season.

Quintana came in with a 2.37 ERA in his last three starts but hadn't won since April 14 thanks to an offense that produced just 1.42 runs per game. He struck out a season-high 10 and giving up four hits and a walk in seven innings.

Astros 4, Giants 3

HOUSTON -- George Springer, back in the lineup for the first time in a week, bashed a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to complete Houston's rally.

Activated earlier from the seven-day concussion disabled list, Springer drilled a 3-2 fastball from Jeremy Affeldt out to left-center field for his fifth homer of the year and the Astros' third of the game. Luis Valbuena hit his eighth home run leading off the sixth, mimicking the leadoff homer that Jason Castro smacked in the fifth.

Angels 2, Rockies 1 (11 innings)

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Albert Pujols' sacrifice fly to left field scored Taylor Featherston with the winning run in the 11th inning, lifting Los Angeles past Colorado.

Mike Trout was walked intentionally with runners at first and third to load the bases for Pujols with no outs.

Trout finished 0-for-4, but he saved two runs in extra innings on defense. In the 10th, he leaped at the wall and robbed Troy Tulowitzki of a home run. In the 11th, he made a running catch of a blooper and threw out a runner trying to tag up and score. The runner was first called safe, but the ruling was reversed after a replay challenge.

Padres 4, Mariners 2

SEATTLE -- James Shields bounced back from two rough outings to lead San Diego past Seattle.

Shields (5-0) struck out nine batters while allowing just one earned run over six innings, ending the Mariners' five-game winning streak. It was his best performance this month, despite the six hits and three walks he allowed.

Closer Craig Kimbrel came on in the ninth to earn his 10th save of the season. Will Middlebrooks homered for San Diego, which got two hits from both Will Venable and Cory Spangenberg.

Preview: Cardinals at Indians

GAME: St. Louis Cardinals (23-10) at Cleveland Indians (12-20)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, May 14 - 12:10 PM EST
WHERE: Progressive Field, Cleveland, Ohio
LINE: -110, 102 TOTAL: 7.5

The St. Louis Cardinals ran into a buzzsaw on Wednesday night and are hoping the poor performance was a one-night blip for the offense. The Cardinals will try to avoid a second straight series loss when they visit the Cleveland Indians for the rubber match of a three-game series on Thursday afternoon.

Corey Kluber picked up his first win of the season and struck out the most batters in an American League park since 1998 when he punched out 18 over eight scoreless innings to earn the win for the Indians. Kluber took a no-hitter into the seventh and the Cardinals managed only one hit in the contest while falling 2-0. The reigning Cy Young Award winner matched the franchise record for strikeouts in a nine-inning game but was denied a chance at the major-league mark when Cody Allen came on in the ninth for the save. The Cardinals did not lose a series until last weekend and are now in danger of dropping two straight for the first time since last August.

TV: 12:05 p.m. ET, FSN Midwest (St. Louis), SportsTime Ohio (Cleveland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Michael Wacha (5-0, 2.09 ERA) vs. Indians RH Trevor Bauer (2-1, 4.19)

Wacha has given up more than two earned runs once in six starts and picked up a win at Pittsburgh on Friday by allowing three runs (two earned) and six hits in six innings. The 23-year-old only notched one strikeout against the Pirates but did not walk a batter. Wacha is making his first appearance against Cleveland and is 3-0 with a 1.86 ERA in three road starts.

Bauer knows about big strikeout totals after racking up 11 in six hitless innings in his season debut, but he has not approached that efficiency again. The 24-year old has been reached for 11 runs and 16 hits in 9 1/3 innings over his last two starts. Bauer has yet to allow a run on the road but is 1-1 with a 6.75 ERA in four home starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cardinals LF Matt Holliday left Wednesday’s game after being hit with a pitch in the elbow and is day-to-day.

2. Indians 2B Jason Kipnis is 10-for-16 with five runs scored in his last four games.

3. Cleveland LF Michael Brantley went 0-for-5 on Wednesday to snap an 11-game hitting streak.

GAME: Pittsburgh Pirates (17-17) at Philadelphia Phillies (12-23)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, May 14 - 1:05 PM EST
WHERE: Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
LINE: -125, 115 TOTAL: 8

The Pittsburgh Pirates had a four-game winning streak come to an end on Wednesday but can still grab a series victory when they visit the Philadelphia Phillies for the finale of a four-game set on Thursday afternoon. The Phillies snapped a four-game slide with the 3-2 triumph and are looking to avoid a fifth straight series loss.

Philadelphia is last in the majors in several key offensive categories, including runs scored, and was held to three or fewer runs for the fifth time in six games on Wednesday. Pittsburgh was turning around its own offense before Wednesday’s lull but still coaxed some production from Andrew McCutchen, who is climbing out of his early-season hole. The star center fielder singled in two runs on Wednesday and has hit safely in seven of the last eight games to lift his average to .231. McCutchen is 6-for-20 with a home run in his career against Aaron Harang, who is starting for the Phillies on Thursday.

TV: 1:05 p.m. ET, MLB Network, ROOT (Pittsburgh), CSN Philadelphia

PITCHING MATCHUP: Pirates RH Vance Worley (2-2, 4.63 ERA) vs. Phillies RH Aaron Harang (3-3, 2.38)

Worley followed up one of his best starts of the season with one of his worst when he was reached for five runs and nine hits in five innings without striking out a batter against St. Louis on Saturday. The California native did not factor in the decision in that game and will be making his first start outside the National League Central. Worley, who came up with the Phillies, won his only previous start against his former team.

Harang went seven innings against the New York Mets on Saturday but was saddled with the loss despite allowing three runs (two earned) and eight hits. The veteran has posted a quality start in all but one of his seven outings. Harang is 16-8 with a 4.04 ERA in 28 career starts against the Pirates.

WALK-OFFS

1. Phillies RHP Jonathan Papelbon, who already holds the Boston Red Sox club record for saves with 219, became Philadelphia’s leader with his 113th on Wednesday.

2. Pittsburgh 2B Neil Walker has hit safely in eight straight games.

3. Philadelphia 1B Ryan Howard is 1-for-15 in his last five games.

GAME: Minnesota Twins (19-15) at Detroit Tigers (20-14)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, May 14 - 1:08 PM EST
WHERE: Comerica Park, Detroit, Michigan
LINE: 156, -170 TOTAL: 8.5

The Minnesota Twins tripled their run total from the previous four games at the Detroit Tigers with a 6-2 win on Wednesday. The Twins will try to steal a series win when they visit the Tigers for the rubber match of the three-game set on Thursday afternoon.

Detroit won its first four home games between the American League Central rivals by a total of 24-2 before Minnesota finally broke out with 12 hits on Wednesday. The Twins also have a chance to tie the Tigers in the Central Division standings with a win on Thursday as both teams try to track down the Kansas City Royals. Detroit is trying to figure out where all of its offense went after totaling seven runs in the last four games. Former MVP Miguel Cabrera is 1-for-13 in those four contests.

TV: 1:08 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FSN North (Minnesota), FSN Detroit

PITCHING MATCHUP: Twins RH Mike Pelfrey (3-0, 2.62 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Anibal Sanchez (2-4, 5.44)

Pelfrey failed to notch a strikeout at Cleveland on Friday but scattered two runs and six hits over seven innings to pick up the win. The Wichita State product has surrendered two or fewer earned runs in each of his last five starts. One of those came on April 28, when Pelfrey struck out a season-high seven and was charged with two runs (one earned) and three hits in seven innings to beat Detroit.

Sanchez allowed at least five runs for the third time in seven starts when he was reached for six (five earned) and nine hits in six innings to suffer a loss against Kansas City on Saturday. The Venezuela native has already faced the Twins twice in 2015 and tossed 6 2/3 scoreless innings against them to earn a win on April 8. Sanchez came out on the losing end against Pelfrey on April 28, yielding three runs and nine hits in seven frames.

WALK-OFFS

1. Tigers OF J.D. Martinez left Wednesday’s game with back tightness and is day-to-day.

2. Minnesota 1B Joe Mauer has hit safely in seven straight and delivered a three-run triple on Wednesday.

3. Detroit C Alex Avila, who went on the disabled list with a knee injury on Saturday, will attempt to rehab instead of surgery.

GAME: Kansas City Royals (21-13) at Texas Rangers (15-19)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, May 14 - 2:05 PM EST
WHERE: Globe Life Park in Arlington, Arlington, Texas
LINE: -116, 107 TOTAL: 9

The Texas Rangers can secure only their second series win of the season when they host the Kansas City Royals on Thursday afternoon in the finale of a four-game set. The resurgent Rangers have taken two of the first three from the American League Central leaders to improve to 7-3 over their past 10 games.

Leadoff hitter Shin-Soo Choo, who batted .096 in April, has sparked the turnaround for Texas. Choo has homered in back-to-back games to extend his hitting streak to 13 games - every contest in May - and is 7-for-14 in the series. First baseman Eric Hosmer continues to swing a hot bat for the Royals, hitting safely in 10 straight and 15 of his last 16 games. Kansas City sends Jeremy Guthrie to the mound to oppose winless Ross Detwiler on Thursday.

TV: 2:05 p.m. ET, FSN Kansas City, FSN Southwest (Texas)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Royals RH Jeremy Guthrie (2-2, 5.70 ERA) vs. Rangers LH Ross Detwiler (0-4, 7.22)

Guthrie halted a four-start winless drought his last time out, permitting two runs on eight hits over a season-high 7 2/3 innings to win at Detroit. It was a strong bounce-back performance from his previous turn versus the Tigers, when he was tagged for six runs on 11 hits in six innings. Guthrie has made 17 career appearances (14 starts) against Texas, logging a 5-4 record and 3.40 ERA.

Detwiler is still in search of his first victory after taking the loss at Tampa Bay on Saturday, permitting five runs in four-plus innings. The 29-year-old Missouri native had his best start of the season in his previous turn but did not factor in the decision after limiting Houston to one run over seven innings. Detwiler has had trouble keeping the ball in the park, surrendering seven homers in six starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. Rangers 3B Adrian Beltre has a 23-game hitting streak against Kansas City.

2. Royals DH Kendrys Morales has a hit in seven straight games and an RBI in three in a row.

3. Rangers SS Elvis Andrus has reached base in 22 consecutive games.

GAME: New York Mets (20-14) at Chicago Cubs (18-15)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, May 14 - 2:20 PM EST
WHERE: Wrigley Field, Chicago, Illinois
LINE: 113, -122 N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Chicago Cubs aim for their first four-game sweep of the New York Mets since 1992 when the teams wrap up their set Thursday at Wrigley Field. The Cubs notched a pair of one-run victories in the series already, including a 2-1 victory Wednesday in which they scored in the eighth and ninth against New York's bullpen.

The Cubs have dominated when the Mets come to visit, winning seven straight home games against New York and taking seven of the last eight series at Wrigley. Cubs left-hander Travis Wood hopes to continue his strong pitching at home, where he is 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA on two starts this season compared to an 0-2 mark and 7.72 ERA in four road starts. Keeping the ball in the park has been a problem for Wood, who has surrendered six homers in his last four starts. The Mets have struggled at the plate of late, scoring three runs or fewer in five of their past six contests and 12 of their last 15.

TV: 2:20 p.m. ET, SNY (New York), CSN Chicago

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets LH Jon Niese (3-2, 1.95 ERA) vs. Cubs LH Travis Wood (2-2, 4.96)

Niese has allowed more than one earned run only once in his six starts this season and has recorded two straight quality starts. The 28-year-old was excellent last time out, holding Philadelphia to two unearned runs and five hits over seven innings. Niese has struggled against the Cubs, going 3-4 with a 5.16 ERA in eight career starts.

Wood's ERA has spiked after back-to-back rough outings, and the Cubs have lost his last two starts. The 28-year-old lasted only four innings Saturday at Milwaukee and was tagged for six runs (four earned) and six hits. Wood is 2-1 with a 3.34 ERA in six career starts against the Mets.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cubs 1B Anthony Rizzo is hitting .458 against left-handed pitchers this season, but is 1-for-11 in his career versus Niese.

2. Mets INF Daniel Murphy is 14-for-42 in 11 games this month after going 16-for-81 in April.

3. Chicago rookie 2B Addison Russell went 2-for-3 with a double Wednesday and has reached safely in 16 straight games and 18 of his first 20 big-league contests.

GAME: San Francisco Giants (17-17) at Cincinnati Reds (17-17)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, May 14 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati, Ohio
LINE: 142, -154 TOTAL: 7

The Cincinnati Reds send ace Johnny Cueto to the mound on Thursday as they seek their third consecutive victory in the opener of a four-game series against the visiting San Francisco Giants. The Reds, who have played the second-fewest home games in the National League, rebounded from a three-game losing streak to take the final two of their series against Atlanta.

San Francisco had to settle for a two-game split in Houston to fall to 8-4 this month. Giants right-hander Tim Lincecum has never beaten Cincinnati but the two-time NL Cy Young Award winner is riding a 15-inning scoreless streak. Reds third baseman Todd Frazier has homered in back-to-back games and is tied with Washington's Bryce Harper for the NL lead with 12. Teammate Marlon Byrd is also in the midst of a power surge with five blasts in his last 10 games.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, CSN Bay Area (San Francisco), FSN Ohio (Cincinnati)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants RH Tim Lincecum (3-2, 2.00 ERA) vs. Reds RH Johnny Cueto (3-3, 2.98)

Lincecum has not allowed a run in his last two starts, blanking Miami on three hits and striking out a season-high eight over six innings on Friday. He went eight stellar innings in his previous turn, limiting the Los Angeles Angels to three hits. Lincecum, who has yielded only one homer in his six starts, has a rocky history versus the Reds with an 0-4 record and bloated 9.79 ERA is six career outings.

Cueto's numbers were not reflective of his dominance in his last outing, as three of the four runs he allowed came in the ninth inning of a 10-4 victory over the Chicago White Sox. It marked the sixth time in seven turns that the 29-year-old Dominican has pitched at least seven innings. One concern is Cueto's recent penchant for giving up the long ball - he has surrendered two home runs in each of his last three starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. The away team has won six straight in the series, including a four-game sweep by the Reds at San Francisco last June.

2. Frazier is batting .392 with five homers in 22 career games against San Francisco.

3. Giants rookie 2B Matt Duffy is riding a seven-game hitting streak.

GAME: New York Yankees (21-14) at Tampa Bay Rays (19-16)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, May 14 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg, Florida
LINE: -119, 110 TOTAL: 7.5

The Tampa Bay Rays look to make it easier on themselves after two straight comeback victories as they host the New York Yankees on Thursday in the finale of a four-game set. The Rays, who allowed two runs in the first inning the past two days before giving up none the rest of the way each night, are now 3-6 against the Yankees this season.

Steven Souza Jr. is 4-for-11 in the series and belted his team-leading sixth homer in Tampa Bay’s 3-2 victory Wednesday as the Rays permitted two or fewer runs for the fifth time in six games – four of them wins. The Yankees left 16 on base combined the last two games, losing two straight for the first time since April 14-15. Mark Teixeira is 6-for-10 with a homer and three RBIs in the series and Carlos Beltran boasts a six-game hitting streak (8-for-22) for the Yankees. Leadoff batter Jacoby Ellsbury continues to set the table for New York, scoring 10 runs in the last 10 contests.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, YES (New York), Sun Sports (Tampa Bay)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees RH Chase Whitley (1-1, 3.06 ERA) vs. Rays RH Erasmo Ramirez (0-1, 8.38)

Whitley suffered his first loss in his third start of the season last Saturday when he allowed five runs over 5 2/3 innings against Baltimore. The 25-year-old Alabama native permitted one run on six hits in five innings with five strikeouts and one walk to gain the victory against Tampa Bay on April 28. Asdrubal Cabrera is 3-for-4 and Kevin Kiermaier 2-for-2 versus Whitley, who is 1-0 in three career appearances (one start) against the Rays.

Ramirez makes his third start of the season after allowing only two runs and four hits over nine innings as a reliever in his previous five appearances. The Nicaragua native was pounded for nine runs in his first start April 15 versus Toronto and came back to limit the Blue Jays to one over four innings 10 days later. Ellsbury and Teixeira have homered against Ramirez, who gave up two runs in four innings versus the Yankees this year.

WALK OFFS

1. Cabrera is 7-for-20 over the last six games and reached 1,000 career hits with his fourth double in that span Wednesday.

2. New York C Brian McCann is 11-for-28 with eight RBIs this season against the Rays.

3. Tampa Bay INF Logan Forsythe is 5-for-10 with a homer and three runs batted in the series to raise his batting average to .304.

GAME: Toronto Blue Jays (17-18) at Houston Astros (21-13)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, May 14 - 8:10 PM EST
WHERE: Minute Maid Park, Houston, Texas
LINE: -104, -104 TOTAL: 8.5

Buoyed by a dramatic victory, the Houston Astros continue their six-game homestand when they square off with the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday in the opener of a four-game series. The American League West-leading Astros appeared headed for their seventh defeat in nine games before launching three solo homers to salvage a two-game split versus San Francisco on Wednesday.

George Springer celebrated his return from the seven-day concussion disabled list with a tiebreaking homer in the eighth inning and closer Luke Gregerson nailed down the save in his first appearance since coming off the family medical emergency list. The Blue Jays opened their seven-game road trip by dropping two of three to AL East rival Baltimore. Toronto has been a feast-of-famine club offensively during a 4-4 stretch, amassing 27 runs in the four victories while managing only nine in the four defeats. The Astros won four of seven meetings last season, outscoring the Blue Jays 17-4 in the final three.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, SNET (Toronto) ROOT (Houston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Blue Jays RH Drew Hutchison (3-0, 6.69 ERA) vs. Astros RH Roberto Hernandez (1-3, 3.86)

Hutchison rebounded from a pair of ugly starts his last time out, earning the victory with five innings of one-run ball against Boston. He had been battered for 12 runs and 17 hits in his previous two outings while failing to get through the fifth inning. The 24-year-old Hutchison is 1-0 in four road starts despite getting shelled for 19 runs on 24 hits over 12 2/3 innings in his last three away from home.

Hernandez deserved a better face last time out, taking the loss despite holding the Los Angeles Angels to two runs on six hits over a season-high 7 2/3 innings. He had permitted at least three runs in each of his first five starts but has pitched a minimum of six innings over his last five turns. Hernandez is 3-3 with a 4.24 ERA versus the Blue Jays and has struggled against Jose Bautista, who is 6-for-15 with a homer.

WALK-OFFS

1. Astros C Jason Castro has homered in back-to-back games and hit safely in 11 of his last 12.

2. Toronto has scored at least six runs in each of Hutchison's seven starts.

3. RF Colby Rasmus is in his first season with Houston after slamming 63 homers over the previous three seasons with the Blue Jays.

Preview: Rockies at Dodgers

GAME: Colorado Rockies (11-19) at Los Angeles Dodgers (22-11)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, May 14 - 10:10 PM EST
WHERE: Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, California
LINE: 165, -180 N/A TOTAL: N/A

Los Angeles and Colorado are coming off losses as they begin a four-game series at Dodger Stadium on Thursday, but that's where the similarities end. The Rockies' losing streak reached 11 games - their longest since 2000 - after a 2-1 setback in 11 innings to the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday while the Dodgers, who lead the National League West by five games, had their five-game win streak halted by Miami 5-4.

Colorado's troubles extend off the field as manager Walt Weiss missed Wednesday's contest to undergo an emergency appendectomy and Troy Tulowitzki was to meet with his agent Thursday morning with the No. 1 topic expected to be setting the wheels in motion for a trade. Between the lines, the last-place Rockies are hitting .246 during the slide while posting a 7.84 ERA and an opponents' batting average of .325. Los Angeles is 25-5 in its last 30 regular-season games at Dodger Stadium - 15-3 this season - and won the last six meetings at home against the Rockies in 2014. Los Angeles' Brett Anderson tries to defeat his former team for a second straight start and opposes Chad Bettis, who will be recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque to make his 2015 debut with Colorado.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, ROOT (Colorado), SportsNet LA (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rockies RH Chad Bettis (NR) vs. Dodgers LH Brett Anderson (2-1, 3.52 ERA)

Bettis was 2-2 with a 3.97 ERA in six starts for Albuquerque as he prepares to make his ninth major-league start. "Definitely," the 26-year-old Texan told reporters, when asked if he prefers to start. "I feel like starting suits me best, from the routine standpoint, and being able to set up hitters down the line in the game." Bettis is 1-5 with a 6.88 ERA in 37 games with Colorado - 0-0, 5.19 in four appearances (one start) against Los Angeles.

Anderson was credited with a complete game after allowing an unearned run in five innings of a 2-1 rain-shortened victory at Colorado on Friday. ''You can't really think about that because then you're hesitant and you're just going to end up hurting yourself more so than without that mindset,'' the 27-year-old Texan told reporters about pitching in the rain. ''I just got to go out there and try and get people out and do my best. And fortunately in weird circumstances, I was able to pitch pretty good and get us a win.'' Anderson was 1-3 with a 2.91 ERA in eight starts in his only season with the Rockies in 2014, which was cut short by back and finger injuries.

WALK-OFFS

1. Bench coach Tom Runnels on Wednesday managed the Rockies, who were swept by the Dodgers in a rain-abbreviated two-game set at Coors Field last weekend.

2. Los Angeles (22-11) owns the best run differential in baseball at plus-62.

3. Colorado C Nick Hundley on Wednesday went 0-for-4, ending his career-best 13-game hitting streak.

Preview: Nationals at Padres

GAME: Washington Nationals (19-16) at San Diego Padres (18-17)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, May 14 - 10:10 PM EST
WHERE: Petco Park, San Diego, California
LINE: 108, -117 TOTAL: 6.5

The San Diego Padres return home Thursday to begin a four-game series against the surging Washington Nationals, who have won 12 of their last 15 to move within 1 1/2 games of the first-place New York Mets in the NL East. San Diego stands one game over .500 after splitting a two-game set in Seattle.

The Padres likely will face the Nationals without outfielder Wil Myers, who is awaiting test results after injuring his left wrist sliding into third base Sunday. The versatile Yangervis Solarte is filling in for Myers, who has scored 28 runs as the team’s primary leadoff hitter. Nationals left fielder Jayson Werth is a career .194 hitter at Petco Park, but he continued to show signs of breaking out of a season-long slump with a three-run homer in Wednesday’s 9-6 win over Arizona. Right fielder Bryce Harper is hitting .308 with 12 home runs for Washington, which is seeking its sixth consecutive series victory.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, MASN (Washington), FSN San Diego

PITCHING MATCHUP: Nationals RH Doug Fister (2-1, 2.87 ERA) vs. Padres RH Tyson Ross (1-3, 3.98)

After closing April with two shaky outings, Fister has opened the month with two quality starts. The former Fresno State star received a no-decision Saturday when he held Atlanta to three runs over 6 2/3 innings. Fister is facing San Diego for the first time since pitching for Seattle on July 2, 2011, when he was a hard-luck loser despite tossing nine innings of one-run ball.

Ross is winless in his last five starts, but he struck out six and allowed two runs in six solid innings against Arizona on Saturday. Control has been an issue for the 28-year-old, who issued a total of 16 walks in his first four starts but owns a 20-to-7 strikeout-to-walk ratio over his last three outings. Ross made his lone career start against Washington last June when he took a loss after allowing five earned runs in 5 1/3 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Padres OF Matt Kemp was 4-for-37 on the team’s just-completed nine-game road trip.

2. Washington C Wilson Ramos is 23-for-59 during his career-high 15-game hitting streak.

3. San Diego is 4-14 when trailing after six innings.

Preview: Red Sox at Mariners

GAME: Boston Red Sox (16-18) at Seattle Mariners (15-18)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, May 14 - 10:10 PM EST
WHERE: Safeco Field, Seattle, Washington
LINE: 110, -119 TOTAL: 7.5

The Boston Red Sox have put a dismal stretch behind them and look to continue a quick turnaround when they begin a four-game series at Seattle on Thursday. After dropping seven of eight games in a stretch that saw them replace their pitching coach and make multiple roster changes, the Red Sox have won three of their last four.

A series win in Oakland included an extra-inning victory and a 2-0 triumph against Athletics ace Sonny Gray on Wednesday. The mini-surge has pulled Boston within two games of .500 and it has come while slugger David Ortiz continues to struggle. He was 0-for-4 on Wednesday, is 3-for-23 during a six-game swoon and has not homered since April 24, a span of 15 games. Ortiz is a career .296 hitter at Seattle, which had a four-game winning streak snapped with a 4-2 loss to San Diego at home Wednesday.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, NESN (Boston), ROOT (Seattle)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox RH Joe Kelly (1-2, 6.35 ERA) vs. Mariners LH Roenis Elias (0-1, 3.86)

Kelly is 0-2 with a 7.67 ERA over his last five starts while finishing six innings in just one of those outings. Control was the primary issue in a 7-1 loss at Toronto on Saturday, when he walked seven and gave up six runs in 5 2/3 innings. The 26-year-old, who has 18 strikeouts with 13 hits allowed in 17 2/3 innings on the road, tossed five scoreless innings opposite Seattle ace Felix Hernandez in a meeting at Fenway Park last season.

Elias is making the most of his opportunity filling in for the injured Hisashi Iwakuma, recording a pair of quality starts this month while recording 13 strikeouts in 13 innings. He let up three runs in seven frames of a no-decision at the Los Angeles Angels in his previous start May 6. Elias, who is 4-7 with 3.99 ERA in 17 career starts at home, has never faced Boston.

WALK-OFFS

1. Red Sox IF/OF Brock Holt is 2-for-21 with seven strikeouts this month after hitting .386 in April.

2. Of the Mariners' 33 games, 29 have been decided by three runs or fewer.

3. The Red Sox are 8-3 in series openers.
