(705) PHOENIX SUNS VS (706) DENVER NUGGETS

Take: Over the total

Reason: Your Bonus Play for Thursday, March 10, 2016 is in the NBA scheduled contest between the Phoenix Suns and the Nuggets in Denver. A pair of poor defenses clash here, with Phoenix second to last in the NBA in points allowed with 107.4 ppg and No. 27 in field goal shooting defense. Phoenix is 6-2 when they face a team with a losing straight up record. Denver isn't very good on defense, either, No. 20 in points allowed. Denver is 17-5-1 over the total at home and the Over is 8-1 in the Nuggets last 9 games vs. a team with a winning percentage below .400. Denver is also 8-3 over the total against the Western Conference. Play Phoenix/Denver Over the total.

Today’s Bonus Play is a Big East duel where I’ll be siding with the team seeking some revenge.

727 BUTLER vs. 728 PROVIDENCE 2:30 PM

Take: 727 BUTLER -3.5

It’s the third meeting this season between Butler and Providence, with the Friars capturing the first two hookups. Providence got insanely hot after halftime in the first battle and ended up winning impressively on the road. The rematch was a down to the wire thriller, and I thought the Friars got pretty lucky in that game. The key basket was actually a Kris Dunn brick that ended up getting a very kind backboard bounce and went in for three crucial points, and that was the biggest play of the game.

Providence has two superstars. The Dunn/Bentil combo is lethal. They really don’t have much more than that. For Providence to win, they’re going to need one of the supporting cast members to step up. I’m not ruling that out, certainly. Jalen Lindsey is off a tremendous game and has shown some life lately. Rodney Bullock had his best game of the season when these teams met back at the end of December. Maybe one of the other role players goes off. Anything can happen in these games.

But the fact remains that a big component in the Providence tumble of sorts has been the inability to get much out of anyone not named Dunn or Bentil. Unless that changes, I just can’t see PC making a deep run in this event and they figure to have trouble today.

Butler is back to playing well again. The Bulldogs had some missteps but they’ve found some rhythm down the stretch. Aside from one ugly loss to Xavier, which is a matchup nightmare for this team, Butler has played some rock solid ball lately.

I don’t think there’s any question that an injury proved to be the catalyst that got the Bulldogs back in high gear. The Tyler Lewis concussion forced a reconfiguration of the Butler lineup, with Roosevelt Jones moving to point guard. They’ve very simply been a better team since that happened, and props to coach Chris Holtmann for sticking with the change even after Lewis recovered.

This should be an exciting game. The Friars are finally back to good overall health and they’re always very well supported at Madison Square Garden. Butler has a point to prove against a team that knocked them off twice this season. There’s no bubble ramifications here, as these two teams will be getting their dance cards stamped on Sunday evening.

My numbers say Butler, I like the double revenge angle when that jibes with the data and I believe Butler’s overall better balance will be a key today. The number is a bit of a worry, as I don’t expect anything lopsided here. But it’s not so big that I feel the need to back off, so Butler minus the points is the choice.

Sharp Bettor

Sharp Bettor's Free Pick for Thursday, March 10, 2016, NHL.

A long road trip for a bad New Jersey offense, last in the league in goals scored. The Under is 53-24-14 in the Devils last 91 vs. the Western Conference. San Jose has a strong defense, off a 3-0 win over Edmonton, part of a 5-2 run under the total.

Play New Jersey/San Jose Under the total.
