RECOMMENDED*CHOICES

# 2 ASTURIANA 2/1

# 4 BELAROSA 10/1

# 5 SORELLA ITALY 5/1

ASTURIANA is my choice. She looks very good in this spot and I expect will be on the lead or close at the midpoint. Should expect this animal to be close up at the wire versus these horses. BELAROSA - This filly could improve on Lasix. Has some encouraging handicapping angles which make this one a play.

# 4 COLORMEPEGASUS 5/1

# 7 MENEHUNE 4/1

# 1 FOREVER DI 15/1

I've got to go with COLORMEPEGASUS. Has performed well recently in sprint races, posting a nifty 86 avg speed rating. Will probably go to the lead and should never look back. Should be given a chance - I like the figs from the last contest. MENEHUNE - Ran a solid last race. FOREVER DI - Had one of the strongest Equibase Speed Figures of this field in his last outing.

Hawthorne - Race #8 - Post: 5:50pm - Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $9,000 Class Rating: 78

Rating:

#5 VBREEZE (ML=5/2)

VBREEZE - I'll forgive that last race on April 2nd when he was a beaten favorite. That race was pretty good for a $25,000 Claiming race and this gelding's rating was solid. Faced tougher last race out at Hawthorne. Based on Equibase class ratings, this is a weaker group, so I will put this horse on my list of strong contenders. Just check out his latest speed rating, 99. That one fits well in this group. Recent speeds of 88-85-99 tell me this thoroughbred is fit and ready for today.

Vulnerable Contenders: #6 HE'S A DANDY CANDY (ML=3/1), #7 HOLY BULLEX (ML=5/1), #3 UNO MAS MODELO (ML=6/1),

HE'S A DANDY CANDY - Finished fifth last time. Would have to improve to finish in the money in today's race. HOLY BULLEX - He showed not much at all in the last event. UNO MAS MODELO - Recent dropping speed ratings of 77/72/64 give an indication that this horse may be going off form. This racer ran a run-of-the-mill fig in the last race. He shouldn't show signs of improvement and will probably suffer defeat in today's event running that fig.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - VBREEZE - This thoroughbred's last two speed figures of 85 and 99 are better the today's class rating of 78.

EARLY PICK 4: 1,4,5/3,4,6,9/1,2,5/3 = $36

LATE PICK 4: 3/1,4,5,9/2,4,6/4,5,6,8 = $48

MEET STATS: 416 - 1228 / $2160.80 BEST BETS: 69 - 113 / $215.70

SPOT PLAYS: 25- 112/ $166.40

Best Bet: ARSENAL SEELSTER (7th)

Spot Play: BILLS FELLA (9th)

Race 1

(9) TEARFUL OF HAPPY was pacing a bit erratically early in the mile last time but she showed some grit late to win despite missing 3 1/2 weeks. This spot is tougher but she could repeat at a price coming back in a week this time. (5) LUCKY PLAYER showed some late interest last time. Filion will likely put her into the race this week; using. (3) OK JEWEL was stymied by the slow early pace last week, but she did race well to be second. She can take this if she is driven aggressively. Toss her in the Pick 5. (7) JUST TOO SPOILED had issues last time that were likely caused by broken equipment. She is another to consider here in a wide-open dash.

Race 2

(3) RADICAL ROAD tracked then passed a huge favorite last week in a sharp effort. Filion sticks; call to repeat. (1) SCENE A MAGICIAN was in too tough last time. He looks like the main threat to the choice here. (7) NOBLE PRIZE has good late speed to offer most weeks. He can close for a piece here. (5) MY BIG KADILLAC faces easier and he can wake up in this spot and grab a small share.

Race 3

(4) MAJESTIC STREAK faces easier, returns quicker and gets a better post here; top call. (7) VESUVIO BI had a useful opener where he was trotting well late in the mile. He's worth a look here. (6) VICTORS MAGIC improved sharply in his second start and he should be able to grab a slice. (1) CHARMBO CHROME is another to consider for vertical wagers as he should get a good trip in or near the front.

Race 4

(4) JUMP JIVE AND JAM shows a 1:51 1/5 mark taken in this class at this track in early August. Anything close to that mile makes her a winner here. (5) LYRIC OF LIFE has really come on in her past couple of starts. She's the one to fend off late here. (1) HOT SPOT HANOVER is another that has put together several good starts in a row; don't discount her here. (3) THATGIRLISONFIRE never misses the Super and she likely won't here either.

Race 5

(9) ON THE MINUTE MARK's big rally fell just short last week, but she is clearly very sharp right now and gets the nod here. (4) STRONGRTHANDASTORM gets McNair here, which could result in some dramatic improvement. (6) SUNSET FILLY - a $12K Harrisburg buy - is a full-sister to a filly that won early and she's worth a look in this field. (3) TOUCHING THOUGHT has a race two back that puts her right there with these. Perhaps she disliked the slop at Flamboro.

Race 6

(2) PENNIES FROM ABOVE should be able to work out a much better trip from her inside draw here. I'll give her a slight nod over (1) CAMERON HILL, who comes off a blowout win in a race where five of her rivals broke stride. (5) WORK THAT MAGIC worked out a great trip to score at a huge price last week but the mark she took that night is the fastest in this field; using. (6) HURRICANE HAZEL will be passing horses late. She's a good one to use on the bottom of vertical wagers.

Race 7

(3) ARSENAL SEELSTER faces easier and he stands a good chance of controlling things here. (7) REBELLIOUS can improve on his opener and move up with that experience in tow. (8) MASTER THE VIEW gets some class relief here. He's worth a look for Pick 4 bets. (2) PRAIRIECREEKPRINCE can sit a trip and take a share here.

Race 8

(4) IM OUTSTANDING improved in her second start for trainer Auciello and now gets a better post to work with; slight nod. (1) CHIC CHICK left hard early, then capitalized off a covered trip to win at a huge price last week. She could trip-out again here starting from the inside. (9) ABSOLUT SEELSTER is 0-16 but recent efforts make her a contender here; likely at a square price. (5) CORE FUSION has yet to get a good trip and when he does he might be very tough.

Race 9

(6) BILLS FELLA was too far back last time vs. a strong winner, but he closed nicely at the end which should prime him perfectly for the first leg of this stakes series; top call. (2) SAUBLE SHADOW raced much better in his second start and further improvement here would not be a surprise. (4) DREAMFAIR B J couldn't capitalize on a great trip last time, but these should be easier and he is a player. (3) THROWOUTOFBETTER typically takes a smaller share. That trend should continue here.

Race 10

(4) ROADMAPPER has been racing great from outer posts and now she gets a better draw. She should be tough to beat here. (8) BATOUTAHILL was patiently driven to an easy win last week and Vanderkemp has her at the top of her game now; using. (6) WINDSONG MAGIC picks up Jamieson here. She could get put into play early and trip-out near the front. (5) JLS BAD MOON RISIN has improved his late speed recently. He should take a smaller share at a minimum here. (2) ANNELI HANOVER figures to get an inside following trip here and take a share.

Meadowlands - Race #1 - Post: 7:00pm - Maiden Claiming - 5.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $15,000 Class Rating: 61

Rating:

#7 BOBBY THE BOSS (ML=5/2)
#6 WE WILBURN YOU (ML=9/2)

BOBBY THE BOSS - Take this advice. When you've got a first timer, take a look at dam stats as much as sire stats. This one's dam has been great winning at a 50 percent rate. Going on Lasix for the 1st time. While a common handicapping angle, it's still quite important to factor in. WE WILBURN YOU - A big drop down in class figure points from his September 2nd race at Monmouth Park. Based on that key piece of info, I will give this one the edge. Likes to go to the lead and the fact that today is a shorter trip should help. I'm focusing on the class of this thoroughbred, and this one is the 'classiest' of the bunch.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 Z SUPREME (ML=2/1), #1 MONDAY PIRATE (ML=5/1), #1A SHADES PLAY (ML=5/1),

Z SUPREME - Showed very little in the last event. Really don't expect any betterment today. MONDAY PIRATE - Awfully difficult to wager on this racer when he hasn't been showing any indications of eagerness lately. This gelding registered a rating in his last clash which likely isn't good enough in today's race. SHADES PLAY - Should be difficult for this horse to beat this field off of that last speed figure. Unlikely to improve enough to run a figure anywhere near today's class figure, so put him on the vulnerable competitors list.

DRF

MEET STATS: 347 - 1015 / $1,883.80

BEST BETS: 46 - 84 / $152.80

Best Bet: UPFRONTWHOSURLADY (2nd)

Spot Play: HERETIC FRANCO N (3rd)

Race 1

(3) GIDDY UP DELIGHT has come up a touch short in his last few tries but they have been good efforts; veteran should be on the move early. (8) FRATERNITY is razor-sharp for Bartlett/Milici but has to overcome the eight hole again. (6) WELL TO DO ships in, now in a new barn, and can be given a look at a big price.

Race 2

(4) UPFRONTWHOSURLADY debuts for Milici via claim, picks up the top driver and will be heading to the front. (1) DELICIOUSLYNAUGHTY was uncovered a long way last week and held well for a board spot. (7) FRESH SQUEEZED has been very sharp in his last two but is stuck with another poor post.

Race 3

(6) HERETIC FRANCO N has been a disappointment since arriving in the U.S. but she drops to the bottom level tonight and faces an equally questionable field here. (2) FANCY DESIRE returns locally and has loads of back class. (7) FREETIME showed some live moves when she raced here last year.

Race 4

(5) IDEAL NUGGETS put in a big two-move effort in defeat versus better last week; tough to look past from this spot. (2) NEFERTITI BLUE CHIP backed up from the pocket last out but clearly the Bamond trainee is better than that. (1) WRAPPED TO GO steps up in class looking for three straight but she is unproven at this level.

Race 5

(2) GEISHA GIRL N just missed at this level two back and she draws inside what she needs to beat. (3) KEENE OLIVIA gets much-needed post relief and will be much more involved. (4) HEAVENS LEGACY is a good fit with these but hasn't won in some time.

Race 6

(3) WYNBERG COURAGE N beat these two bask with Lasix added and the import may have more to offer. (1) ARTSMAH missed a nose to a classy rival last out and he draws best again. (2) I'M SUPERSONIC A was shuffled a bit last out as the winner cleared; don't hold that against him.

Race 7

(5) ALBERTO CONTADOR N has faced much better than these in the past with some success; veteran can be tighter in his third start back from vacation. (1) LIGHTNING RAIDER also gets class relief and draws best; huge threat. (6) MACON GEORGIA A was a sharp upset winner last week and can be considered.

Race 8

(3) PASULTIMATEDELITE N made a very untimely break last out at Pocono and prior to that she was facing much better locally; mare clearly deserves top billing. (1) GADSDEN HANOVER could not sustain to the wire last week; gets another crack from the rail. (7) MILLWOOD FAITH N has been good in her last three with Lasix added; consider underneath at a price.

Race 9

(4) SAM'S ESCAPE has been dull recently but he gets class relief and lures Bartlett. (2) BACKUP A was a very sharp winner two back against similar. (1) ARTIST NIGHT goes for another new barn via claim and has been sharp recently.

Race 10

(5) UNION MAN HANOVER could not sustain a two-move effort last week; a smoother trip can get it done. (1) SMOOTH CRIMINAL was claimed again out of last, where he never fully fired in a fast mile; good inside spot helps his cause. (4) GYPSY LEATHER finally put it all together and was dead game winning last week.

Race 11

(1) WESTERN BAYAMA has been sneaky-sharp in all recent and he gets the post relief he needs to push him over the top. (3) CHOCOLATE CRACKERS debuts for Milici off the claim and has that Bartlett guy driving. (5) IDEALBEACH HANOVER drops in class and he's capable of blowing these away if in the mood.

Race 12

(7) MASSIVE ATTACK A is done no favors by the post draw but he's had some success facing much better. (3) OUR ELS DREAM N had no excuse last week; she's better than that. (6) BABY REMIND ME drops back to the level of her last win.

Scherzer embraces spotlight for Game 5 vs. Dodgers
By David Driver, The Sports Xchange

WASHINGTON - - Max Scherzer was asked last year about impending free agent pitchers that his team could sign during the annual Washington Nationals WinterFest event.
"It is all about winning," Scherzer said. "When you get to the park and you come into the clubhouse, your only thought is about winning and what it takes to do that. There are times, off the field, you are making decisions ... that has to subside when you walk through the clubhouse."
Scherzer has been all about winning since he signed a seven-year contract with the Nationals prior to the 2015 season.
The right-hander from St. Louis will have a chance to elevate Washington to new heights on Thursday night when he takes the mound at home in the fifth and deciding game of the National League Division Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
"This will probably be the biggest start of my career," Scherzer told reporters in Los Angeles. "I've said that a few times in my life, but I think this will be it. You're going to get the absolute best out of everybody on both teams."
The Nationals have a chance to win their first postseason series Thursday.
Washington lost Game 5 at home to the St. Louis Cardinals of the NLDS in 2012 and fell in four games to the San Francisco Giants in the NLDS two years later.
The last time a baseball team in Washington won a postseason series was when the Senators beat the New York Giants in Game 7 of the 1924 World Series in the nation's capital.
Scherzer was the starter and loser in Game 1 on Friday at Nationals Park. He gave up four runs in six innings with five strikeouts as the Dodgers won 4-3 in a game started by Clayton Kershaw.
The Washington ace allowed a solo homer in the first inning to Corey Seager and a two-run shot to Justin Turner in the third. Scherzer allowed 31 homers during regular-season play, and several times it was unlikely players who went deep.
Scherzer is 4-4 with a 3.93 ERA in 13 postseason games, with 11 starts. He has 85 strikeouts in 65 2/3 innings in his playoff career.
Rich Hill, who could get the nod for the Dodgers, lost in Game 2 on Sunday at Nationals Park after his start was rained out Saturday. Hill pitched in 25 games out of the bullpen in 2015 with Triple-A Syracuse, the top farm club of the Nationals.
The lefty surrendered a three-run homer to Jose Lobaton in the fourth inning of Game 2 that gave Washington a 3-2 lead. Hill allowed six hits and four runs in 4 1/3 innings and was tagged with the loss.
The Nationals could also see rookie right-hander Julio Urias, who has not pitched in the series.
"We talked about Rich as an option, obviously. But so is Julio and how we want to strategize to win Game 5," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said after Game 4. "We're going to talk through it."
Hill took the blame for the Game 2 loss.
"I believe we're tied in this series because I didn't execute," he said after Game 2. "I'm really disappointed. I thought that game was going to play well for me personally to put us in a good position to win and I didn't execute. It's all solely on me."
Acquired in a trade with the Oakland A's in August, Hill is now 0-2 with an 8.59 ERA in two postseason starts. His other playoff start came when he played for the Chicago Cubs in 2007 against the Arizona Diamondbacks, when he went just three innings. That was one year after he pitched for manager Dusty Baker with the Cubs in 2006.
The Dodgers forced a Game 5 with a 6-5 win at home on Tuesday in Game 4. Kershaw started on short rest and did not figure in the decision. He was lifted with two outs in the seventh.
"I felt really good about it until the last four minutes," Kershaw told reporters. "It's a weird feeling. But you've just got to swallow your pride a little bit and realize we won the game and be excited about it and get ready to go back to D.C."
Said Baker about Game 5: "I know Kershaw ain't pitchin'. Thank God."
Scherzer won his 20th game of the season in the regular-season finale at home against the Miami Marlins on Oct. 2 in a playoff tuneup.
On Thursday he will try to send the Nationals to their first postseason series win.
"Going to be a heck of a ballgame," Scherzer said. "Those are two great teams.

NLDS Game 5 & ALCS Game 1 MLB Betting Matchups & Odds
by Alan Matthews

Maybe the Curse of the Billy Goat is a thing of the past and the Chicago Cubs are finally going to win the World Series. How else to describe what happened in the top of the ninth inning on Tuesday in San Francisco? The Giants were up 5-2 and appeared a sure thing to win their 11th straight postseason elimination game, which is just stupid. But the bullpen has been a problem pretty much all season for Manager Bruce Bochy, and that imploded as five relievers allowed four runs. The Cubs won 6-5 to avoid a winner-take-all Game 5 back in Chicago where the pressure would have all been on the home team. Only one other team in history -- the 1986 Mets -- had ever rallied from three runs behind in the ninth inning to clinch a postseason series. So now the Cubs open the NLCS at home Saturday against the winner of Thursday's Dodgers-Nationals Game 5. The Cubs have never won an LCS. They lost in 1984, 1989, 2003 and 2015 but are +145 favorites to win the World Series.

NLDS: Dodgers at Nationals (-145, 7)

The winner-take-all game is Thursday at 8 p.m. ET. It originally was scheduled for 5 p.m. but shifted to prime time when the Cubs-Giants series ended. Los Angeles decided to bring back ace Clayton Kershaw on short rest for Tuesday's Game 4, and I guess you'd have to say it worked as the Dodgers stayed alive with a 6-5 lead, although the bullpen blew Kershaw's 5-2 advantage. Ageless Chase Utley had the winning RBI single in the bottom of the eighth.

For this game, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said he will use left-hander Rich Hill and rookie lefty Julio Urias, but he did not announce which one will start. Hill, however, says he has been told he's starting. Hill (12-5, 2.12) was not sharp in Game 2 of this series, allowing four runs and six hits over 4.1 innings with seven strikeouts and two walks in a 5-2 loss. Nationals catcher Jose Lobaton hit a three-run homer off him. Hill will be working on short rest as a starter for just the second time in his big-league career. But he does have relief experience, so that should help him. Certainly Urias will be called upon at the first potential sign of trouble. Washington's Ryan Zimmerman is 6-for-9 in his regular-season career off Hill with two homers and three RBIs. Lobaton should be behind the plate as in addition to that homer in Game 2 he's 3-for-3 in the regular season with two doubles off Hill. Jayson Werth is 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

Nationals manager Dusty Baker thought about bringing his ace, Max Scherzer (20-7, 2.96) back on short rest as well on Tuesday, but since Baker knew he was assured of no worse than a Game 5, he smartly held off. So now Scherzer is on an extra day of rest for what he calls the biggest start of his career. In Game 1 of the NLDS, Scherzer allowed four runs on five hits -- including homers to Corey Seager and Justin Turner -- in six innings and took the loss. Homers have been his one problem this year. During the regular season he allowed 1.22 home runs per nine innings, his highest rate since 2011. Scherzer was 8-3 with a 2.56 ERA at home in the regular season.

Key trends: The Dodgers are 0-4 in Hill's past four. They are 2-8 in their past 10 playoff road games. The Nationals are 6-0 in their past six after a loss. They are 4-1 in their past five vs. a lefty. Washington is 5-1 in Scherzer's past six at home. The "over/under" has gone under in five of Hill's past seven. The under is 10-3 in Scherzer's past 13 on five days of rest.

Early lean: Nationals and under.

ALCS: Blue Jays at Indians (-144, 8)

Game 1 of the ALCS is Friday at 8 p.m. ET and it's the first postseason meeting between these franchises. Did you know that of the five playoff teams still standing, the Jays are the ones with the most recent World Series title? That was way back in 1993. If you predicted these two to meet in the ALCS, major kudos. I actually thought Toronto would beat Texas, the team with the most wins in the American League. I certainly didn't expect the first Blue Jays playoff sweep ever. And I gave the Indians little chance to beat the Red Sox, the best offensive team in baseball, much less sweep them.

I do like the Jays to win this series even though they lost four of seven regular-season meetings with the Tribe. Toronto goes with All-Star right-hander Marco Estrada (9-9, 3.48) in the opener. Manager John Gibbons basically had everyone at his disposal since his team finished off the Rangers on Sunday. Estrada was fantastic in Game 1 of the ALDS in Texas, allowing one run and four hits over 8.1 innings with six strikeouts and no walks in the 10-1 victory. He's 3-1 with a 2.68 ERA in eight career postseason games, including four starts. Estrada took a no-decision at home vs. Cleveland on July 2, allowing three runs over five innings. Carlos Santana is 3-for-5 off him career with a homer.

The Indians haven't officially announced their starter yet, but it's obviously going to be Cy Young candidate Corey Kluber (18-9, 3.14). Kluber, the 2014 Cy Young winner, had his final start of the regular season skipped due to a mild quad strain and thus was pushed back to Game 2 of the ALDS vs. Boston. Kluber showed no signs of any trouble in shutting out the Red Sox on three hits over seven innings with seven strikeouts. Kluber was 0-1 with a 6.30 ERA in two starts this year against the Blue Jays. Russell Martin has two homers off him in 10 at-bats. Jose Bautista is 3-for-9 with four RBIs. Bautista didn't play vs. the Indians all this year due to injury.

Key trends: The Blue Jays are 6-0 in their past six vs. teams with a winning record. They are 9-3 in Estrada's past 12 on the road. The Indians are 12-2 in their past 14 home games vs. a right-handed starter. The under is 9-3 in Estrada's past 12 road starts vs. teams with a winning record. The under is 7-3 in the past 10 meetings.

Early lean: Blue Jays and under.

"Those are two great teams."

Thursday’s six-pack

— Ottawa 5, Toronto 4 OT– Auston Matthews scored all of Leafs’ goals; if you have him in fantasy, you’re pretty bleepin’ happy today.

— Matthews is 5th player ever with a hat trick in his first game, first player ever with four goals in his debut.

— Former Baylor coach Art Briles is working with the Browns’ offense in Cleveland as a consultant. Browns have three former Baylor players.

— Cam Newton returned to practice in Carolina, good news for them.

— Best part of Cubs’ run is seeing 87-year old comedian Bob Newhart post pics of himself on Twitter “hoisting the W” after every Cubs win. Newhart’s great TV show in the 70’s was set in Chicago.

— Lot of recruiting sites that rate HS prospects are full of it; Denzel Valentine is in the NBA now, was a great player at Michigan State. As a high school senior, he was listed as the country’s #129 prospect. Oy.
