Costa Rica is much safer than many other places in the U.S. There's really nothing to be affraid off... if you don't look for it.

I'm thinking about visiting and bringing a wide-format camera with tripod. The equipment would fit in a case about the size of a normal suitcase. Would a trip to the rainforests allow me to carry that around?

QL,that may be a little rough, although some areas of rain forrest are more accessible than others. My friend brought down one of the old Cannon 35 mm, with a zoom lens and got incredible photos.

OK. So what are the best places to take pictures of your beautiful country? I'm talking about pictures that can be made into poster size, suitable for framing. Of course, panoramas fit the bill in that situation but streams and lakes and such would work too.

Thanks for the feedback.

btw-I am reasonably fit, but do not want to make too much of a journey lugging camera equipment around.

I like the Monte Verde area. Also Manuel Antonio. I'm sure some other people can give better choices.

Some of the coves around Manuel Antonio would be spectacular taken with the right panoramic lens. Unfortunately you have to leave the park at 4pm, but I can only imagine how incredible a shot like that would be at sunset.

Thanks Judge. That volcano would be wild.

WildBill, do they have mountains near those coves? I would be looking for an overhead shot. Sunsets would be quite something as well. Imagine the sun setting to the west of a cove from an overhead angle, perhaps catching the ripples of waves on the ocean outside the cove.

Sort of, but really ground level is best so you can sense the trees, the sand, and these beautiful little islands. The mountain view is nice too, but not quite as dramatic.

WildBill, you're blocking me. The creative talent of an artiste cannot be directed! LOL!

Just kidding. Thanks for the advice.

Youd have to go to Corcovado in the Peninsula de Osa. You'll thank me later for the tip. :drink:

Hey, just don't let some people's comments get to you, C.R is to me a beautiful place, if you have the chance to go there or anywhere else out of your home town, just do it. The experience of traveling is something that you'll never forget.

I'm reading about all these murders in Cancun, Mexico now, as the drug dealers are fighting with each other. There were tourists murdered in Acapulco recently as well. The tourism people of Mexico are pissed that the press is publicising what's going on there. I would recommed you pass on any vacation south of the border. Now is not the best time to go visiting third world countries. Go to Europe or visit one of the many incredible places in the U.S. that you haven't seen yet.

Except that it will be extremely expensive adventure due to the fallout of the value of USD versus the Euro

People get killed everywhere. The murders in Cancun that made the news were drug related, three of them federal agents. While that isn't exactly flattering, chances of you getting killed in Cancun are lower than in LA or some parts of Europe even. If you go to the drug infested neighborhood of any city your chances of being a victim of crime go up, do they not American???

Basically, where there's poverty, there's crime.

You'd be surprised how low some of the fairs are to Europe. If one is on a shoe-string budget, then it might not be feasible. But, you get what you pay for. And they don't have cheap ass there either, like they do Latin America. Cheap ass is the NUMBER ONE reason American males like to go to Latin America.

International air faires to/from/thru the U.S. are amazingly cheap. Costa Rica -Seattle can be had for ~$300 or less round-trip. 4 years ago it was 2-3 times that amount. I presume because U.S. citizens are flying less and international citizens find U.S. visa policies (even just to fly thru) too much a hassle.
