Box said it best when it's how the word is used often to lessen the dirtiness of the word, "nigga".
I just watched Glory Road last night; I don't have the words in my head right now but one scene is like this: a white bb teammate asks the blacks "why do you say 'bad' all the time"? Something like that.
They respond, "oh, it really doesn't mean 'bad'... it's to emphasize how good/cool it is."
When Box mentioned about how some words are used MORE often to lessen the impact, I thought of that scene in that movie.
I don't say dawg or such... but I would unconsciously imitate whatever others say.... have one cool black coworker who loves to say, "my bad" when he made a mistake... I reply that back to him as well.
Another black coworker, who I've been friends with for years do say "hey bro" and I say the same.
I can see why some ppl think if "someone uses that word to me, why the heck not in using it?"
But "nigga"... that's one slang word that can stay ONLY within right circles, really.
