An Afghan court has sentenced four men to death for their part in the brutal murder of a woman who was falsely accused of burning a copy of the Koran.
In a slaying that shocked the nation and inspired calls for authorities to ensure equal rights for women and protection from violence, a 27-year-old woman named Farkhunda was savagely beaten to death in a frenzied mob attack in the capital Kabul earlier this year.
The religious scholar was pushed from a roof, run over by a car and set on fire before her body was thrown in the Kabul River in full view of several policeman after bogus rumours spread that she had deliberately damaged of copy of the Islamic holy book.
As well as the four death sentences, Judge Safiullah Mojadedi also jailed a further eight defendants to 16 years in prison and dropped charges against 18. The proceedings are part of the trial of 49 suspects, including 19 police officers, with the remaining suspects due to be sentenced on Sunday.

The trial, which began Saturday, only involved two full days of court proceedings — an unusual swiftness in the slow-moving Afghan judicial system. It was broadcast live on national television, reflecting huge public interest in the case.

Judge Safiullah Mojadedi handed down the four death sentences at Afghanistan's Primary Court in Kabul. The defendants have the right to appeal their sentences.

The charges included assault, murder and encouraging others to participate in the assault. The police officers were charged with neglecting their duties and failing to prevent the attack.
After the hearing Farkhunda's brother, Mujibullah, said that her family was angered by the leniency of the court toward the majority of the defendants.
'The outcome of the trial is not fair and we do not accept it - you saw just four people sentenced to death but everybody knows that more than 40 people were involved in martyring and burning and beating my sister,' said Mujibullah, who like many Afghans uses only one name.
'Eighteen people have been freed. The court should punish them and that should be a lesson for anyone who would commit this sort of crime, anywhere in our country, in the future,' he added.

Farkhunda's brutal killing shocked many Afghans, though some public and religious figures said it would have been justified if she had in fact damaged a Koran.
A presidential investigation later found that she had not damaged a copy of the Muslim holy book.
The final agonizing and brutal moments of her life were captured on mobile phone cameras by witnesses and those in the mob that attacked her.
The videos of the assault circulated widely on social media. They showed her being punched, kicked, beaten with planks of wood, pushed by police onto a roof and dropped from it, thrown in the street and run over by a car.
She then had a lump of concrete dropped on her and her body was dragged along the road outside the mosque were the assault took place and tossed onto the bank of the Kabul River.
A crowd watched as her body was set on fire.

The murder sparked nationwide outrage and soul-searching, as well as a civil society movement seeking to limit the power of clerics, strengthen the rule of law and improve women's rights.
Farkhunda's parents addressed the court before the sentences were handed down, asking that the accused be dealt with according to the law.
'Everybody saw what happened and I insist on justice,' her mother, Bibi Hajira told the court Wednesday. 'That's all I want.'
Afghanistan's judicial system has long faced criticism for its inability to offer the majority of Afghans access to justice. Women especially are sidelined, despite constitutional guarantees of equality and protection from violence, a recent report by the United Nations concluded.
The attack on Farkhunda was widely seen as symptomatic of the general low regard for women in Afghan society, where violence against women often goes unpunished.

[h=2]ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi has released a call to arms which asks Muslims everywhere to physically join ISIS in the area it now controls or simply take up the struggle against unbelievers wherever they are.[/h] The title of the message “March Forth Whether Heavy or Light” comes from a verse in the Koran which calls on believers to “strive with your wealth and your lives in the cause of Allah.” In Baghdadi’s view that striving is ISIS’s war against unbelievers.
“O Muslims, Islam was never for a day the religion of peace. Islam is the religion of war,” al-Baghdadi says, according to an English language transcript of the speech promoted by ISIS-affiliated social media accounts. The transcript, which was posted online at Downrange, portrays Islam’s Muhammad as a warrior:

Where are you in relation to your Prophet (peace be upon him), whom you claim to emulate, and who spent his whole life (peace be upon him) as a mujāhid for the cause of Allah, fighting His enemies? His lateral incisor tooth was broken in battle, his forehead was wounded, two rings from his chainmail cut his cheeks, his helmet was broken on his head, and blood ran down his face.

Baghdadi frames the necessity of war against unbelievers as a religious duty but also as a necessity, saying, “the Jews, the Christians, and the rest of the disbelievers will not approve of you nor abandon waging war against you until you follow their religion and apostatize from yours.” The only place of safety in this global war between Muslims and unbelievers, Baghdadi says, is with ISIS:

This war is only against you and against your religion. Has the time not come for you to return to your religion and your jihād and thereby bring back your glory, honor, rights, and leadership? Has the time not come for you to know that there is no might nor honor nor safety nor rights for you except in the shade of the Caliphate?… Therefore, O Muslims, seek shelter – after Allah – with the Islamic State.

The final pages of the letter are devoted to praise for the so-called “lions of the Caliphate” who are already fighting for ISIS around the world. In addition to numerous areas within Iraq and Syria, Baghdadi mentions fighters in Libya, Algeria, Tunisia, Yemen, and West Africa.
Last month, sources claimed Baghdadi had been seriously injured by an airstrike in Iraq sometime in March. Baghdadi was reportedly recovering but unable to maintain daily control of the terrorist group, however, those reports were not confirmed by U.S. officials. The audio message released Thursday is being viewed by some analysts as proof that Baghdadi (injured or not) is still leading the group.
According to the Iraqi military, ISIS’s 2nd in command Abu Alaa al-Afri was killed in an airstrike this week. That report appears to have been unsupported by any verifiable facts, and U.S. officials are said to be skeptical.

An official close to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei asserted that his government has a godly ordained right to annihilate Israel, Al Arabiya reported on Tuesday.
The “government of the Islamic Republic of Iran has divine permission to destroy Israel,” said Mojtaba Zolnour, a Khamenei representative in the elite Revolutionary Guards.
According to semi-official state news agency Fars, Zolnour said that, “the Noble Koran permits the Islamic Republic of Iran to destroy Israel.” He added that, “Even if Iran gives up its nuclear program, it will not weaken this country’s determination to destroy Israel.”
This is by no means the first time that Iranian political or military officials have threatened Israel with destruction.
Iran has raised the specter of “wiping Israel out of existence,” since Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini seized power in the country in 1979. Khomeini’s animosity towards Israel was based on an ideological and religious opposition to Zionism, amplified by the challenge Israel’s military and economic strength posed to Iranian regional expansionism.
Perhaps most famously, former Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad repeatedly called for Israel to be “wiped off the map” in a 2005 speech that he gave. More recently, in late March 2015, General Mohammad Reza Naqdi, the commander of Iran’s Basij militia – a volunteer paramilitary organization under the command of the IRGC – said that, “wiping Israel off the map is not up for negotiation.”
Iran also actively finances and militarily backs proxy terrorist groups Hamas and Hezbollah that are ideologically opposed to Israel’s existence.

[h=2]A teenage Turkish woman competing in a televised singing contest similar to The Voice is in critical condition after being shot in the head Monday.[/h] The Daily Mail reports Mutlu Kaya, 19, previously received death threats for her decision to join Turkey’s Sesi Çok Güzel competition on the country’s private channel Fox.
According to the site, the young woman once told producers, “When they heard that I was going to join the competition, they told me they would kill me. I am afraid.”
Her fears were validated Monday as she rehearsed inside her home in the Ergani district of Diyarbakir province, when an attacker broke into her backyard and shot her through a back window from the residence’s garden, striking her in the head.
The state Anatolia news agency said Tuesday a suspect in the shooting had not been named, but the New York Daily News reports one of four people who have been arrested in connection with the attack is the woman’s former-boyfriend.
The country’s Posta newspaper reported prior to the attack that Kaya had been threatened by someone within her own family for going to Istanbul to take part in the show.
She had reportedly been mentored by Turkish female folk legend Sibel Can.
Mutlu’s father, a man named Mehmet Kaya, told reporters outside her hospital: “I just want my daughter to be healthy and don’t want anything else… I am expecting help from Sibel Can, she is like a mother to Mutlu.”
Per the Daily News, women in the Ergani district are expected to conform to traditional roles, and the attack comes during a time when violence against women is already a source of anger in the Turkey.

Al-Qaeda's job application form was among the trove of declassified documents on Wednesday.




'Please enter the required information accurately and truthfully. Write clearly and legibly. Name, age, marital status. Do you wish to execute a suicide operation?
Al-Qaeda's application form starts like that of any large enterprise, but leads recruits quickly to a darker place: 'Who should we contact in case you become a martyr?'
Recruiting a global jihadist network is a tricky job, especially if you are holed up in a Pakistani compound sheltering from U.S. drones.
But that is no reason not to be methodical, as the detailed militant recruitment form bearing the watermark of 'The Security Committee, Al-Qaeda Organization' shows.
The document was among intelligence materials seized by US commandos on May 2, 2011 after they stormed Bin Laden's hideout in the Pakistani town of Abbottabad and shot him dead.
