Islamabad (AsiaNews ) – A “clan” of four Muslim men raped a Christian girl of only seven years old, named Sara yesterday in the village of Mally ki, Daska, Sialkot district (Punjab) . The child is now in Sialkot hospital, in the intensive care unit in a “critical” condition according to doctors. Meanwhile, the police, instead of arresting the culprits, helped the local clan to kidnap the girl’s father; Iqbal Masih was taken and hidden in a secret place to “force the family not to report the story, to reach an agreement with the criminals and to avoid a dispute of a religious background”.
The Christian community has attempted every possible means to negotiate with police, with no success. The police seem reluctant to punish the rapists and free Masih, in the hands of the torturers who abused daughter.
Activists and human rights organizations demand justice and ensure their support for the family. Following repeated appeals and pressures, the judiciary has opened an investigation and ordered the arrest of two people involved in the rape; however so far there is no news of her father’s fate.
According to recent research, the cases of sexual abuse and violence – especially against young Christian girls – are on the rise in the province of Punjab, under the complicit silence of the police and the judicial authorities. Father John Arshad, a priest involved in the protection of minority rights, condemns the sexual assault on a girl of only seven years and the kidnapping of the parent, “to put pressure on the family not to report the crime”. The “silence” of civil society, he adds, heightens the drama of the story even more.
With a population of more than 180 million people (97 per cent Muslim), Pakistan is the sixth most populous country in the world, the second largest Muslim nation after Indonesia. About 80 per cent of Muslims are Sunni, whilst Shias are 20 per cent. Hindus are 1.85 per cent, followed by Christians (1.6 per cent) and Sikhs (0.04 per cent). Violence against ethnic and religious minorities is commonplace across the country, with Shia Muslims and Christians as the main target, with things getting worse. Dozens episodes , including targeted attacks against entire communities – such as in Gojra in 2009 or Joseph Colony Lahore last year – or abuses against individuals (Asia Bibi , Rimsha Masih or the young Robert Fanish Masih, who also died in his cell), are often perpetrated under the pretext of the blasphemy laws .

7 years old.

My God. These people have no conscience. There are pure evil.

Islamic extremists have publicly crucified two Syrian rebels in northeastern Syria in revenge for a grenade attack on members of their group.

The jihadist Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant said it had executed a total of seven prisoners who it claimed had carried out a grenade attack on one of its fighters earlier this month in the Euphrates Valley city of Raqqa.
The group, which even Al Qaeda have been keen to distance themselves from, said on Twitter: 'Ten days ago, attackers on a motorbike threw a grenade at an ISIL fighter at the Naim roundabout. A Muslim civilian had his leg blown off and a child was killed.

Photos taken in the northern Syria town of Raqqa on Tuesday, appear to show two men being crucified in public. It could not be independently verified that the men were dead or how they had been executed

'Our fighters immediately set up a roadblock and succeeded in capturing them. They were then able to detain other members of the cell.'
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights posted a photograph of the two prisoners being crucified at the roundabout.

Passers-by appear to be walking past the two men apparently unfazed.
One of the men is pictured with a banner wrapped round his body which reads: 'This man fought against Muslims and threw a grenade in this place.'

Abu Ibrahim Alrquaoui, who described himself as a founder of the group Raqqa Is Being Slaughtered Silently, told FoxNews.com that those killed had previously fought against the Syrian government of Bashir al-Assad.

He said he witnessed the executions and took photographs which are now being circulated online.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said they were not the first crucifixions by ISIL. On April 16, its fighters executed a man for theft from a Muslim in the same way.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said they were not the first crucifixions by ISIL
ISIL's exactions caused a backlash against them from rival rebel groups, including Al-Qaeda's official Syria affiliate Al-Nusra Front, who joined forces against its fighters from the start of the year.
ISIL has now been forced out of much of northern Syria but its fighters remain entrenched in Raqqa - the only provincial capital entirely outside Syrian government control - and much of its surrounding province.
The group also carried out three executions in the Raqqa provincial town of Tal Abyad, on the Turkish border, and two more in the town of Saluq, the Observatory said.
Last week, ISIL claimed responsibility for a series of explosions which killed 28 people and left more than 40 injured at a political rally in Iraq on Friday.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his wife Asma al-Assad are seen visiting families whose relatives have died fighting for pro-government forces in a photograph posted on the Presidency's official Facebook page

The militant group Asaib Ahl Haq (League of the Righteous) was presenting its candidates for elections on April 30 at the rally in eastern Baghdad.

Three bombs exploded in succession as people were leaving, reporters at the scene said.

A roadside bomb went off near the main gate, followed by a suicide car bomb after a few minutes and then a final explosion.

In a statement posted on the internet, ISIL said it had carried out the bombings in response to 'murder, torture and displacement' of Sunnis by Shi'ite militias which 'massacred children and women'.
In February, MailOnline reported how a Syrian girl was stoned to death for opening a Facebook account after a court, under the jurisdiction of ISIL, ruled the act of being a member of the social network deserved to be punished the same way as adultery.
[h=3]ISIL: EXTREMIST GROUP EVEN AL QAEDA DISTANCED THEMSELVES FROM[/h]ISIL (or ISIS) is a pro-Al Qaeda jihadist group that many feared was taking an iron grip over parts of Syria.

The group was formed in April 2013 and grew out of Al Qaeda's affiliate organisation in Iraq. It has since become one of the main jihadist groups fighting government forces in Syria.

The final letter in the acronym ISIL stems from the Arabic word 'al-Sham'. This can mean the Levant, Syria or even Damascus but in the context of the global jihad it refers to the Levant.

Its precise size is unknown, but it is thought to include thousands of fighters, including many foreign jihadists.

Analysts say non-Syrians constitute a majority of ISIL's elite fighter corps and are disproportionately represented in its leadership.

It took over the city of Al-Reqqa after rebels overran the city in March 2013. It was the first provincial capital to fall under rebel control.

It also has a presence in a number of towns close to the Turkish border in the north of the country, and has gained a reputation for brutal rule in the areas that it controls.

The group has been operating independently of other jihadist groups such as the Nusra Front and has had a tense relationship with other rebels in Syria. Al Qaeda refuse to deal with them.

In July, a commander of the Western-backed Free Syrian Army (FSA) was reportedly shot dead by ISIL fighters in the coastal province of Lattakia.

There were also reports of deadly clashes between the two groups in the north-western province of Idlib. ISIL also seized the northern town of Azaz from the FSA on 18 September.

There has also been friction with other Islamists. In November 2013, ISIL was accused of killing a prominent member of the Syrian Islamist rebel group Ahrar al-Sham.

[h=1]Arizona: Muslim claims Islamic law gives him right to kill wife[/h] Robert Spencer Apr 29, 2014 at 8:00am women's rights in Islam 31 Comments
This is awkward. Where did Ansar Muhammad get the crazy idea that Islam allows him to kill his wife if he so chooses? Has he been fooled by the venomous writings of greasy Islamophobes? Or has he extrapolated from the idea that a Muslim should beat a woman from whom he “fears disobedience” (Qur’an 4:34) and from the general culture of the Qur’an and Sunnah, that treats women as commodities of men, to be disposed of as men please? Will moderate Muslim leaders in Arizona and elsewhere in the U.S. denounce this and explain exactly how Ansar Muhammad has become a misunderstander of Islam?
“Man allegedly claims Islamic Law gives him to right to kill wife,” by Kim Schriner, Fox 10 News, April 28, 2014:
AVONDALE, Ariz. – Police say a valley man threatened to kill his wife, telling his victim “Islamic Law” gave him the right to kill her.
Ansar Muhammad, 43, is facing several charges, including assault and imprisonment.
According to the police report, on April 26, Muhammad sexually assaulted the victim, held her against her will while threatening to kill her, punched and strangulated her, causing physical injuries at their home near 112th Avenue and Encanto Boulevard.
Police say the victim fled to a neighbor’s home to call them after the suspect fell asleep.
Muhammad was detained outside his residence upon police arrival and refused to make any statements.
In the report, police say their investigation determined that Muhammad and the victim were arguing about her having an affair when “Ansar picked the victim up, carrying her like a baby and put her in their vehicle against her will.” He then proceeded to drive to the rear of a nearby Walgreens store where “Ansar began to assault the victim by punching her multiple times, leaving physical injuries on her face, neck, back, chest and legs.”
When the victim continued to try to get away and told him to stop, police say he told the victim he was going to kill her because he had the right due to his “Islamic Belief.”
The victim told police Muhammad then drove back to their home and threatened to throw her in a lake because she can’t swim. When they arrived at the residence, Muhammad told the victim to remain quiet and not wake their three children before taking her phone, per the police report.
Muhammad was arrested and booked into the Avondale city jail and later transported to the Maricopa County jail. He faces aggravated assault domestic violence-impede breathing, assault-intent/reckless/injury, unlawful imprisonment, threatening-intimidation with injury and sexual assault charges.
He’s being held without bond.

[h=1]Who Destroyed Alexandria's Famous Library?[/h]
Alex.jpg
Part of a column from a payrus roll containing Aeschines' "Against Ctesiphon"

The Library of Alexandria was one of the best-known of the libraries of the ancient world. One of the interesting facts about the ancient world that seems to be missing from many history books is that there were many great collections of books and literature in ancient times and most were open to any scholar from anywhere in the world.
The library at Alexandria actually competed with that at Pergamum in amassing the most complete collection of books in the world. This went on in the 200's B. C., and it is interesting to note that there were already so many works in existence that obtaining a copy of each would have been an impossible undertaking even then. The destruction of this priceless treasure was a stroke of the most unimaginable bad luck. If Byzantine Egypt had been taken by one of the later Islamic conquerors, this irreplaceable collection would have been counted amongst the finest of the spoils of war to fall into a victor's hands.
Early in the year A. D. 642, Alexandria surrendered to Amrou, the Islamic general leading the armies of Omar, Caliph of Baghdad. Long one of the most important cities of the ancient world and capital of Byzantine Egypt, Alexandria surrendered only after a long siege and attempts to rescue the city by the Byzantines. On the orders of Omar, Caliph of Baghdad, the entire collection of books (except for the works of Aristotle) stored at the Library of Alexandria were removed and used as fuel to heat water for the city's public baths.

This is not the first time the library was damaged or destroyed. Originally built to house the massive collection of books accumulated by the Ptolemaic rulers of Egypt, the library had been devastated by fire several times. During Julius Caesar's Alexandrian campaign in 47 B. C., Caesar set fire to ships in the port. The fire spread to the library, which was called the Museum at that time.
In A. D. 391, riots instigated by fanatical Christians damaged the collection heavily. During the years between disastrous events, the library collection had been gradually restored. In 641, the Caliph of Baghdad exhibited the same spirit of religious fanaticism in ordering Amrou to burn the books stored there. The loss of the library at Alexandria was a particularly grievous blow because the works of so many Roman scholars. literary geniuses, and historians were destroyed.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Hollywood is responding to harsh new laws in the tiny Southeast Asia nation of Brunei by boycotting the Beverly Hills Hotel.

The Motion Picture & Television Fund joined a growing list of organizations and individuals Monday refusing to do business with hotels owned by the sultan or government of Brunei. They're protesting the country's new Islamic Shariah criminal law that calls for punishing adultery, abortions and same-sex relationships with flogging and stoning.
The Motion Picture & Television Fund says it won't hold its annual Night Before the Oscar party at the hotel as it has for many years.
"We cannot condone or tolerate these harsh and repressive laws and as a result support a business owned by the sultan of Brunei or a Brunei sovereign fund associated with the government of Brunei," the fund's directors said in a statement.
Brunei's Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, who owns the Beverly Hills Hotel, has praised his country's new laws as a "great achievement."
"The decision to implement the (Shariah penal code) is not for fun but is to obey Allah's command as written in the Quran," the sultan said last week.

Brunei, a conservative country where alcohol is banned and Muslim courts already govern family affairs, began phasing in its version of Shariah that allows for penalties such as amputation for theft and stoning for adultery. Most of the punishments can be applied to non-Muslims, who account for about one-third of the 440,000 people in the oil-rich country.
The most severe punishments — flogging, amputation and stoning — are to be introduced over the next two years.
Others boycotting the Sultan's Dorchester Collection of hotels include Richard Branson's Virgin Group; the Hollywood Reporter, which traditionally holds a starry media breakfast at the Beverly Hills Hotel; and the Feminist Majority Foundation, which moved its annual Global Women's Rights Awards on Monday from the Beverly Hills Hotel to the nearby Hammer Museum.
Branson tweeted over the weekend that no member of his staff would stay at any Dorchester Collection hotel "until the Sultan abides by basic human rights."
Mavis Leno, co-chair with husband Jay Leno of the Global Women's Rights Awards, said the new penalties for adultery, abortion and homosexuality in Brunei "violate international law and have no place in civilized society."
Members of the Feminist Majority Foundation joined representatives from other civil rights groups Monday afternoon to picket the hotel. Jay Leno was among the protesters.
Dorchester Collection's chief executive said the hotel boycott is misdirected.
"American companies across the board are funded by foreign investment, including sovereign wealth funds," Christopher Cowdray said in a statement.
The Beverly Hills City Council is set to consider a resolution Tuesday calling on Brunei to divest its ownership is the historic hotel.

(CNN) -- Amid news of more Nigerian girls being kidnapped by a militant Islamist group, the country's President said he welcomed an offer of U.S. support in the search for them, the U.S. State Department said Tuesday.
The U.S. Embassy in Abuja, Nigeria, is ready to create a "coordination cell" to provide intelligence, investigations and hostage negotiation expertise, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said. The cell would include U.S. military personnel, she said.
Secretary of State John Kerry called Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday to reiterate an offer to help, Psaki said. The conversation happened on the same day that CNN and the Reuters news agency confirmed that at least eight more girls had been snatched in Warabe village, which is in the northeastern part of the country.

Map: Where the girls were kidnapped

Warabe residents told CNN that gunmen moved from door to door late Sunday, snatching the girls, who are between 12 and 15 years old.
The latest abductions come amid international outcry over the April 14 kidnapping of hundreds of girls by the organization Boko Haram, which U.S. officials say is trained by al Qaeda affiliates. There has been widespread criticism that the Nigerian government is not doing enough to rescue the girls.
"The President and the government is not taking this as easy as people all over the world think," Doyin Okupe, senior special assistant to Jonathan told CNN's Isha Sesay. "We've done a lot but we are not talking about it. We're not Americans. We're not show people, you know, but it does not mean that we are not doing something."
Specifically, he said two special battalions have been devoted to the search for the missing girls and more troops are on their way.
Okupe said there is a "hot pursuit" on for the kidnappers.
"Certain things have been ordered. Certain things have been put in place, which I am not in position to say now," Okupe said. "I am very, very sure that this time around, you know, the terrorists have made a major error, and we will get them."
Also on Tuesday the United Nations human rights chief blasted Boko Haram and sent a stern warning to the group that under international law, slavery and sexual slavery are "crimes against humanity."
"The girls must be immediately returned, unharmed, to their families," U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said in a news release.
Since Pillay visited Nigeria this year, the statement read, Boko Haram's actions have "grown increasingly monstrous."
'I abducted your girls'
A man claiming to be the group's leader, Abubakar Shekau, appeared Monday in a video announcing he would sell his victims. The video was first obtained by Agence-France Presse.
"I abducted your girls. I will sell them in the market, by Allah," he said, according to a CNN translation from the local Hausa language. "There is a market for selling humans. Allah says I should sell. He commands me to sell. I will sell women. I sell women."
Boko Haram's name means "Western education is sin." In the nearly hourlong, rambling video, Shekau repeatedly called for an end to Western education.
"Girls, you should go and get married," he said.
In her statement, Pillay condemned the "violent abduction" of the girls.
According to accounts, armed members of Boko Haram overpowered security guards at a school in Nigeria, yanked the girls out of bed and forced them into trucks. The convoy of trucks then disappeared into the dense forest bordering Cameroon.
Pillay has contacted Jonathan and urged the government to take all necessary measures to ensure that the girls are freed, her statement said.
Pillay, along with three other African United Nations women leaders, sent a letter reminding the Nigerian government of its "legal responsibility to ensure that girls and boys have the fundamental right to education and to be protected from violence, persecution and intimidation," according to her statement.
Nigeria's finance minister said Monday that her country's government remains committed to finding the girls, but should have done a better job explaining the situation to the public.
"Have we communicated what is being done properly? The answer is no, that people did not have enough information," Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala told CNN's Richard Quest.
It's difficult to release information about the search for the girls, she said, "because you are dealing with people that you don't know, and you don't know ... what they might do to these girls."
The kidnapping has sparked international outrage, much of it expressed on Twitter with the globally trending hashtag #BringBackOurGirls.

Jay Leno leads boycott of Beverly Hills Hotel, city confronts Brunei over sharia law

May 7th 2014 10:12AM 650 Comments

  • US-BRUNEI-SULTAN-HOLLYWOOD-LENO

By Dana Feldman BEVERLY HILLS, California (Reuters) - The City of Beverly Hills voted unanimously on Tuesday to pressure the government of Brunei to divest the Beverly Hills Hotel, the pink-hued haunt of the Hollywood set, after the small country's enactment of sharia law prompted protests.

Comedians Ellen DeGeneres, Jay Leno and British entrepreneur Richard Branson have been the most prominent figures to advocate shunning the hotel and its bungalows, a favored locale for the Hollywood elite since it opened a century ago.

The resolution urges Brunei to divest its ownership of the hotel, and any other properties it owns within Beverly Hills, and condemns it and other countries that operate under Islamic criminal law.
Emotions were high in the packed council chambers as scores of rank-and-file employees, as well as residents and others, expressed opposition to human rights abuses, support for the fabled property, as well as a reliance on the hotel for jobs.

"This is misguided," Robert Anderson told Reuters after the vote. "We should be against human rights violations in all countries, not just the Brunei."

Badrul Chowdhury, a waiter at the hotel for 14 years, said Brunei was far removed from the lives of hotel workers: "We work. We take care of our families."

Brunei, a former British protectorate of about 400,000 run by Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, last week became the first East Asian country to adopt the Islamic criminal law. It will punish offenses like sodomy and adultery with the death penalty, including by stoning.

The laws will be introduced in phases in the energy-rich country nestled between two Malaysian states on the island of Borneo, with the harshest penalties going into effect in two years.
The U.S. government has been largely silent on the issue until Tuesday, when the State Department told reporters the ambassador to Brunei had privately relayed concerns to the government there about the law.

Through the resolution the council members were "adding their voice" to international outrage, said a spokeswoman.

The council stopped short of taking direct action, such as a city-sanctioned boycott.
In the last few days, organizations have canceled events at the hotel, including the Motion Picture & Television Fund's annual "Night Before the Oscars" charity event and the Feminist Majority Foundation's annual Global Women's Rights Awards.

Gay rights advocacy group Human Rights Campaign on Tuesday called on the hotel's owner to stop promoting special services at the hotel for same-sex weddings, now legal in California.

"This is the height of hypocrisy, and we must ensure that profits from LGBT weddings in the U.S. stop going to a regime that could soon start executing its LGBT citizens," the group's president Chad Griffin said in a statement.

The Beverly Hills Hotel and nearby Hotel Bel-Air are part of the Dorchester Collection of luxury hotels that are owned by the Brunei Investment Agency, an arm of the Brunei government.

Christopher Cowdray, the chief executive of the London-based Dorchester Collection, said those protesting have ignored local hotels owned by countries with poor human rights records and that a boycott would ultimately hurt the local economy most.

"There are other hotel companies in this city that are owned by Saudi Arabia ... you know, your shirt probably comes from a country which has human rights issues," said Cowdray from Beverly Hills.

Terror TV for Tots: Hamas show has child vowing to "Shoot the Jews"[/h] By Paul Alster

A recent Hamas-backed children's television show featured a child vowing to become a police officer so she could "shoot the Jews," revealing anew the depraved indoctrination forced upon kids of Gaza, even as the terror group that leads it has joined forces with the Palestinian Authority.
The shocking display came in a recent episode of "Pioneers of Tomorrow," a show aimed at young children and airing on Hamas' state-run Al Aqsa TV station. In the show, a cuddly giant bee encourages young children to attack Jews, while a young girl presenter lauds one child’s uncle who is a policeman and “shoots Jews."
“You want to be like him?” the presenter asks the girl, who appears to be no older than three or four.
“I will shoot the Jews” the little girl replies.
While such propaganda aimed at the youngest residents of Gaza is not new, even hardened observers found the latest example shocking.
“We’ve been monitoring Al Aqsa TV since it began,” Steven Stalinsky, executive director of the Washington-based Middle East Media Research Institute, told FoxNews.com. “They have multiple TV shows for children that include cartoons. Now they have the bee character, but there have been a whole series of other cuddly animal presenters who all have ended up being martyred and killed. They’ve killed them all off. The bee is just the most recent... but they don’t normally last more than a year.”
The first to be martyred on the ‘Pioneers of Tomorrow’ children’s show was a Mickey Mouse-style character called "Farfour." He went to his death after being interrogated by an Israeli intelligence character. Since then, a rabbit and a bear have been among the presenters of the show to also have been “martyred.”
“Al Aqsa is an official channel of Hamas, which control the airwaves [in Gaza]. This show is absolutely broadcast with the blessing of the authorities,” Stalinsky said. “Al Aqsa programs are not only anti-Semitic, but are also pro-martyrdom and pro-terrorism with lots of indoctrination of children to become martyrs and blow themselves up; not only against Jews in Israel, but also the West in general."
The indoctrination of children and hate-mongering championed by the Islamist regime is reminiscent of the warped caricatures created by Nazi Germany to demonize Jews in the 1930s, say experts.
The twisted lesson for children comes as older generations of once-feuding Palestinians have come together in a deal that could doom any remaining hopes of peace with Israel. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’ decision to work towards forging a new government with Hamas, a U.S. designated terrorist organization, has sparked calls for America to pull its financial aid to the PA-controlled West Bank.
Earlier this week, as part of the ongoing reconciliation between the Palestinian factions, the PA announced it is sending 3,000 police to assist Hamas in Gaza, police whose training may have been underwritten by funds donated by the U.S. and other nations. Those funds were granted to the PA on the explicit understanding that they should not be used in any way to support Hamas.
Whilst possible action to remove U.S. funding from the Palestinian Authority is considered, the children of Gaza and of many other countries in the Middle East continue to be raised on a diet of hatred and violence, Stalinsky said.
“You definitely see similar things on Al Manar TV [Hezbollah TV in Lebanon], but also in Egypt, where they are notorious for a lot of children’s TV shows espousing anti-Semitism,” Stalinsky said. “Anti-Semitism on Arab TV is everywhere in the Middle East.”

ational Council for Women (NCW) called on Egypt's Ministry of Interior
and security officials in Egypt's northwestern governorate of Matrouh,
Saturday, to take the required action to find Sara Abdel-Malik, a
13-year-old girl who was reportedly kidnapped in September.

Abdel-Malik's
father had filed a complaint to the the national body for women's
issues, reporting that his teenage daughter was kidnapped after leaving
school on 30 September.

According
to the father, the girl was kidnapped by a young man who forcibly
married her despite the fact that she is still a child.

In
the Saturday statement published on their official website, the NCW
expressed its complete rejection of child marriage, adding that it is
forbidden under Egyptian law. The legal marital age in Egypt is
currently 18 years old.
In
May, a controversial law lowering the marriage age was put to the
now-dissolved People's Assembly (lower house of parliament), sparking
uproar among women's rights organisations. Similarly, human rights
groups and political figures condemned recent calls by Islamist members
of Egypt's Constituent Assembly to reduce the marital age for women to
as young as nine years old in the draft constitution.

In addition Article 36 threatens equality between men and women by
saying that the state shall ensure equality between men and women as
long as it does not conflict with "the rulings of Islamic Sharia" and
goes on to say that the state shall ensure that a woman will "reconcile
between her duties toward the family and her work in society." This
provision is inconsistent with the provision in the same chapter that
prohibits discrimination on the grounds of sex. Discrimination against
women under Egyptian law, and in particular in family law, is a
longstanding problem, but keeping the reference to "rulings of Sharia"
in the new constitution would open the door to further regression in
women's rights, Muslim Women are already discriminated against when it
comes to matters of inheritance.

In a later interview Makhyoun said on the live TV program Al Ashira
Masa2an that in keeping with the tradition of the prophet girls
should marry as young as 9. Some Brotherhood members and all Salafi
members of parliament are determined to amend Egypt's child law to lower
the marriage age from 18 to 9. One of the frequently criticized forms
of human trafficking in Egypt is that young girls from poor families
have been trafficked to the Gulf for early marriage.
"It is particularly reprehensible that committee members should bow to
pressure to exclude language criminalizing sexual harassment and
trafficking of women and children when this is not only a serious crime
under international law, and is clearly happening," Houry said.

In a further blow to women's rights due to the inaction by the Muslim
Brotherhood to enact enforceable sexual harassment laws, an Egyptian
movement has started to thwart sexual harassment during Eid Al-Adha. So
far they have recorded 300 attempted attacks during the first two days
of the Muslim holiday. The initiative, dubbed 'Catch the Harasser',
began on the first day of Eid, with volunteers working across central
Cairo in a bid to prevent lewd attacks on women. Sexual harassment of
women is a prevelant problem on Egyptian streets. Many muslim men
welcome the Eid El-Adha celebrations where large crowds make it easier
for them to assault women and escape unpunished. A 2008 survey by the
Egyptian Centre for Women Rights found that 83 per cent of local women
and 98 per cent of foreign women had been subjected to harassment at
least once.
