Ottosen... isn't that near Fort Doge?
Yes, about 30 miles north of Fort Dodge and about 5 miles from West Bend, home of the Worlds Largest Grotto.

SO CAL-- Good for you!

I went from growing up in Ottosen, Iowa..........to living in Las Vegas for 17 years.

OTTOSEN

Statistics & Facts The population of Ottosen is approximately 72 (1990).
The approximate number of families is 38 (1990).
72 people and 38 families... I guess that means there are some one person families.

All kidding aside, sounds rough. Onawa was small, but it was one of the biggest towns in my area.

I'm pretty sure I sucked face one night with a girl from Ottosen after a party some friends and I went to in Fort Dodge. I remember her her ditching her friends and we gave her a ride home. She said it was close, but my friends were b*tchin' about the drive (I always was the passenger, never had my own car). The girl never put out. All I remember about that place is that it looked like a very small village. It was dark and probably 24 years ago or so, so I don't remember much.

West Bend-Mallard (???) used to be a pretty strong sports school back in my day (I think that was the name of the school). Are they just called West Bend now?

The Iowa state champ would not be a top 20 team in California. A home in SoCal is worth triple what a home in Iowa is worth. A girl that is a 5 in SoCal would be a 10 in Iowa.

I've lived near Iowa for many years and also in So. Cal. As far as the girls go, there are many beautiful girls in both places although the girls in Iowa are generally more down-to-earth.

I'd take WDV -6.5 and Bettendorf +3.
World Runner, I wish I could bet these IHSAA state football playoff games instead of the my lousy early season NBA picks.

I want Valley for the limit in the championship game. I think it will be more like Valley -14.5.

quantumleap, I respect your opinion and I certainly don't like to get off topic and too sophmorish here, but the chicks issue is a non-issue. If you lived in Iowa (like I did unfortunately for too many years) you would know that the chicks are slim pickens. Where I live (Van Nuys) I can walk out of my house and look outside and within 10 minutes I will see at least a half a dozen girls that will knock the socks off the best I will see in Iowa for a whole year. It honestly is no contest. As far as them being down to earth, that is in general a bad misconception. There are so many more guys in need of girls in Iowa that even the fat, bitchy, obnoxious, etc. ones are picky. My friends back home are lonely, complain of lack of action constantly and resort to marrying girls that half their friends have already done and or impregnated and take care of their kids. It is a sad state of affairs. Sure, there are some that are good (like just about anywhere you go) and hopefully our friends here that live in Iowa have landed one, just not enough to go around. If you lived here in So Cal and didn't find as many hot girls as you did in Iowa I honestly don't know where you were looking.

The only place that really you can even talk about in Iowa is Des Moines anyway. Des Moines is growing quite a bit and is as good as any city the samed size in america. From what I've seen (and I travel more than you'd believe) it's one of the best of it's size.

I will admit. I used to really like going to the barn durning the state basketball/wrestling tourneys when I was in high school. Des Moines is about as good as it gets in Iowa and isn't too bad a city. My cities growing up were Sioux City and Omaha. They seemed great when I was a kid, but I learned awfully quick that for the most part they both sucked. However, Omaha did have some good concerts and I used to love going to old KC/Omaha Kings and Omaha Royals games. Aksarben was kind of fun too.

All-in-all it still can't touch So Cal in any way/shape or form. Two different worlds.

World Runner, are you going to make any more IHSAA football lines? I will be interested in checking them out. Might make some more of my own here in the next few days.

Iowa women are very underrated...........to say there is not many nice women in Iowa is being naive.

The University of Iowa has some of the most beautiful women in the world.............thats just for starters.

Sorry Fishhead... just my opinion. Didn't say there are none... there are some. Most of the hot ones at Iowa U. probably aren't originally from Iowa anyway (seriously, only kidding).

I'm only basing my opinion on living in Iowa until I was 20 and then living in California for the most part until now (will be 40 in 2 weeks). Truly no contest in my opinion on all levels. Even when I lived in Atlanta Georgia and Phoenix Arizona... same thing. When I lived in Iowa I made due with the girls there. I actually thought they were fine. However, when I left I realized there was much better pickins West and East of I-80.

It simply comes down to numbers. The whole state of Iowa's population isn't a whole lot bigger than the area where I live now, the San Fernando Valley (I think the 2000 census numbers had Iowa at about 2.9 mil and SFV at 1.7). If you increase the numbers 20 times in general you get a 20 times better selection (state of CA pop versus state of Iowa).

Obviously I haven't lived all over the state of Iowa and I'm sure there are a lot of nice girls if you are fortunate enough to meet them. It just seemed like such a struggle in Iowa finding girls while here you have choices. I would suggest to any young guy in Iowa who is looking to find a wide variety of girls and simply can't find any at home to come here. I hear horror stories from my friends at home constantly. I'm married now so in all honesty none of this applies to me anymore.

By the way... good hit today on the Hawkeyes. Hoped you cleaned big. I was a Cyclone fan myself but I like to see both schools win (not to mention UNI, Drake and Morningside).

2A semifinals

West Lyon, Inwood -3.5 over Gilbert
Waterloo, Columbus -7 over Sigourney Keota

(Whatever happened to Columbus... didn't they used to be 4-A a while back... I also see the Heelan girls volleyball team is only 3A... what happened to the size of these catholic schools?)

3A semifinals

Decorah-North Winnesheik -3.5 over Fairfield
Harlan -27.5 over Waukee (dropped it down from 28.5... I know this line is ridiculous, just think it could happen)

4A Finals
West Des Moines Valley -14 over Bettendorf

1A Final
Council Bluffs St. Alberts -7 Gladbrook-Reinbeck

A Final
West Bend-Mallard -14.5 over North Mahaska-New Sharon (anyone who beats Galva Holstein is going to get props from me).

And just for laughs...
8 Man Final
Remsen St. Mary's -6.5 over Adair-Casey (hey, Remsen St. Mary's was a baseball powerhouse that used to beat up on the city big boys when I was a kid... I got to make them the favorite).

World Runner, Fishead, hawkeye171... please give me some feedback and tell me why some (if not all) of these lines are off.

have to like some of the dogs. in the dome, harlan has been known to score
alot of points, but they have also given up alot, at times. i think waukee will score, although harlan will win. but the money has to be on the dog here. in the eight-man final, adair casey has had the most success in the eight-man game in iowa, so have to take the points. they beat number one walnut in the semi's.
remsen did edge twin river valley, 42-14, but the in days of the hawk and fish, the outcome would have been different. look for a fairly low scoring 4-a final,
with valley on top. west bend mallard, always tough and i think always go for two after t.d.'s. that could be the difference. saint albert is like a small three-a and should cover in one-a. as far as the catholic schools situation in iowa, enrollment is dropping everywhere in the state, and i think with tuition required at private schools, the drop is even more dramatic. take for instance, carroll public now with many more students than carroll kuemper. and just a side note on the girls in iowa, they're not all nice. otherwise i wouldn't be divorce TWICE.:WTF:

Thanks for the input hawkeye171. I get all my high school info from limited sources, so I know the majority of my lines are going to be bad. I will be interested to see what World Runner puts up. All the info I get is from listening to the Friday night games on FMCTC, Iowa High School Friday Night radio show, and the local on-line papers.

Since I lived on the Missouri river I'm going to always give support and bias to the Western Iowa teams. For example they always praise and say Adair-Casey is the top 8-man team on the Friday Night show... but come on, back in the late 70s and early 80s when I was in high school Remsen St. Mary's might have been the best baseball team in the state, for all clases. Both teams are undefeated, so I'm going to go with them. I've been listening to the majority of the Harlan games this year (sometimes FMCTC covered other games, but mostly Harlan). Harlan really does seem to be the class of the field and their defense sounded incredible against Denison-Schleswig. I'm hoping for maybe a 35-7 score in their semifinal, but I could be wrong.

Monday's games will be exciting. Since I'm going to be working at home Monday (nice thing of owning your own business), I'm trying to find a feed that picks up all the semifinal games. I know FMCTC is broadcasting the Harlan game. Hopefully I'll have some luck.

Also, when did you and Fishead go to Twin River Valley? When I was in high school we never cracked the .500 mark in any year. I think our best record was 3-6 (maybe 4-5, I honestly forgot).

Nice opinions HAWKEYE171.......very interesting.

SOCAL- Hawk and myself graduated in 1978 from Twin Rivers(Twin River Valley now).

When we were sophomores we had a top rated football team, undefeated basketball team, undefeated track team, and a solid baseball team.

We were in 1A but had four schools in 2A in our Twin Lakes conference.......MANSON, POCAHONTAS, ROCKWELL CITY and ALBERT CITY.

The other schools were........GILMORE CITY, ROLFE, and LAURENS.

Manson, Albert City, and Pocahontas were ALL ranked in the top ten in 2A at the time we were ranked 5th in 1A in football in 1975.

We lost to POKY and MANSON, thus didnt qualify for the 1A playoffs.

Our Jr. AND Sr. years we were basically a .500 team.

We always had a good baseball team throughout high school.

I think when we were Seniors in baseball, we only had 2 games where we allowed over 6 runs..............solid defense.

You guys were graduating just when I was starting (finished high school in '82).

We were pretty pathetic in all sports. In the Maple Valley conference we had Galva Holstein, Lawton Bronson, Maple Valley, Westwood, Kingsley Piersen, Ida Grove, Woodbury Central and ourselves (hope I didn't forget anyone).

I ran on a pretty good 2 mile realy team and had some success in the 880 and the mile as an individual, but our team really bit. In baseball I did good too, but again, on a really poor team. Back in legion ball we were always the best team around, we went 20+-1 one year. Unfortunately a lot of kids moved and some of the others just didn't play in high school (did you guys have minors and majors too, no little league in Onawa).

I guess our claim to fame back in high school was that our basketball team held Todd Berkenpas to his 2 lowest scoring games in high school. Do you remember him? He was Iowa's all-time scoring leader for many years and went on to play of Iowa U. I remember he didn't do much in college, but he did manage to be the MVP of a tournament the Hawkeyes were in at the beginning of the season.

I was always jealous of schools like yours. I wanted to play on good teams, just never got the chance.
