I don't think 100K is near what it use to be but its still middle class.

And its hard to call someone who makes 40k impoverished when they probably have a car thats less then 7 years old and a $700 smart phone.

My scale would be less then 28K poor.
28k to 75K lower middle class.
75K to 130k middle middle class.
130k 250K upper middle class.
250k and up upper class.

I would say those numbers are probably pretty fair for the country as a whole. Obviously, cost of living can change things. 250k goes a lot farther in Manhattan, Kansas than Manhattan/NYC.

I don't read Krugman at all. He has similar theories but he has views that do not coincide with my camp. And he has become too political and bloggish (made up word) for me.
